DiffServ resource management in IP-based radio access networks
The increasing popularity of the Internet, the flexibility of IP, and the wide deployment of IP technologies, as well as the growth of mobile communications have driven the development of IP-based solutions for wireless networking. The introduction of IP-based transport in Radio Access Networks (RANs) is one of these networking solutions. When compared to traditional IP networks, an IP-based RAN has specific characteristics, due to which, for satisfactory transport functionality, it imposes strict requirements on resource management schemes. In this paper we present the Resource Management in DiffServ (RMD) framework, which extends the DiffServ architecture with new admission control and resource reservation concepts, such that the resource management requirements of an IP-based RAN are met. This framework aims at simplicity, low-cost, and easy implementation, along with good scaling properties. The RMD framework defines two architectural concepts: the Per Hop Reservation (PHR) and the Per Domain Reservation (PDR). As part of the RMD framework a new protocol, the RMD On DemAnd (RODA) Per Hop Reservation (PHR) protocol will be introduced. A key characteristic of the RODA PHR is that it maintains only a single reservation state per PHB in the interior routers of a DiffServ domain, regardless of the number of flows passing through
Architecture, design, and modeling of the OPSnet asynchronous optical packet switching node
An all-optical packet-switched network supporting multiple services represents a long-term goal for network operators and service providers alike. The EPSRC-funded OPSnet project partnership addresses this issue from device through to network architecture perspectives with the key objective of the design, development, and demonstration of a fully operational asynchronous optical packet switch (OPS) suitable for 100 Gb/s dense-wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) operation. The OPS is built around a novel buffer and control architecture that has been shown to be highly flexible and to offer the promise of fair and consistent packet delivery at high load conditions with full support for quality of service (QoS) based on differentiated services over generalized multiprotocol label switching

An investigation into buffer management mechanisms for the Diffserv assured forwarding traffic class
Includes bibliographical references.One of the service classes offered by Diffserv is the Assured Forwarding (AF) class. Because of scalability concerns, IETF specifications recommend that microflow and aggregate-unaware active buffer management mechanisms such as RIO (Random early detecLion with ln/Out-ofprofile) be used in the core of Diffserv networks implementing AF. Such mechanisms have, however, been shown to provide poor performance with regard to fairness, stability and network controL Furthermore, recent advances in router technology now allow routers to implement more advanced scheduling and buffer management mechanisms on high-speed ports. This thesis evaluates the performance improvements that may be realized when implementing the Diffserv AF core using a hierarchical microflow and aggregate aware buffer management mechanism instead of RIO. Feasibility study of VoIP in 3GPP UMTS release 5 interworking with fixed networks

generation cellular system and has been designed with the objective to be a system with
global coverage. With improvement of bandwidth capabilities, the UMTS system has the
ability to support real time multimedia services. The focus in this thesis is Voice over IP
(VoIP) which enables a user to make phone calls in the packet switched network in
UMTS.
This thesis starts with a presentation of VoIP with the quality requirements related to a
voice session. A voice conversation needs a guaranteed quality to satisfy the participants.
This thesis focuses on three main aspects; Quality of Service mechanisms (Best Effort,
IntServ and DiffServ), VoIP in UMTS with a certain quality and last but not least
implementation of Quality of Service (QoS) in a voice call interworking with external
networks.
Best Effort cannot be used when dealing with real time traffic such as VoIP. IntServ
reserves resources from the application itself, and gives opportunity for each application
in the terminal to request a certain quality. DiffServ works on a higher level and classifies
traffic based on type of traffic, not for a particular request. For UMTS interworking with
IP networks, the theoretical results suggest that IntServ over DiffServ should be used in
the UMTS gateway node.
An evaluation of the UMTS network is done by checking the voice quality attained by the
network during a VoIP session in comparison of a traditional circuit switched call setup.
Moreover, tests from the Norwegian UMTS network operator NetCom became useful
when evaluating how well the VoIP could work when implementing UMTS release 5.
The tests were set up with the focus on delay and voice quality in the network, and were
meant for disclosing the differences with and without quality parameters during a
transmission. Due to network restrictions the test results are limited
Time Driven Priority Router Implementation and First Experiments
This paper reports on the implementation of Time-Driven Priority (TDP) scheduling on a FreeBSD platform. This work is part of a TDP prototyping and demonstration project aimed at showing the implications of TDP deployment in packet-switched networks, especially benefits for real-time applications. This paper focuses on practical aspects related to the implementation of the technology on a Personal Computer (PC)-based router and presents the experimental results obtained on a testbed network. The basic building blocks of a TDP router are described and implementation choices are discussed. The relevant results achieved and here presented can be categorized into two types: qualitative results, including the successful integration of all needed blocks and the insight obtained on the complexity related to the implementation of a TDP router, and quantitative ones, including measures of achievable network utilization and of jitter experienced on a fully-loaded TDP network. Quality of Experience and Adaptation Techniques for Multimedia Communications
The widespread use of multimedia services on the World Wide Web and the advances
in end-user portable devices have recently increased the user demands for better quality.
Moreover, providing these services seamlessly and ubiquitously on wireless networks and
with user mobility poses hard challenges. To meet these challenges and fulfill the end-user
requirements, suitable strategies need to be adopted at both application level and network
level. At the application level rate and quality have to be adapted to time-varying bandwidth
limitations, whereas on the network side a mechanism for efficient use of the network
resources has to be implemented, to provide a better end-user Quality of Experience (QoE)
through better Quality of Service (QoS). The work in this thesis addresses these issues by
first investigating multi-stream rate adaptation techniques for Scalable Video Coding (SVC)
applications aimed at a fair provision of QoE to end-users. Rate Distortion (R-D) models
for real-time and non real-time video streaming have been proposed and a rate adaptation
technique is also developed to minimize with fairness the distortion of multiple videos
with difference complexities. To provide resiliency against errors, the effect of Unequal
Error protection (UXP) based on Reed Solomon (RS) encoding with erasure correction has
been also included in the proposed R-D modelling. Moreover, to improve the support of
QoE at the network level for multimedia applications sensitive to delays, jitters and packet
drops, a technique to prioritise different traffic flows using specific QoS classes within an
intermediate DiffServ network integrated with a WiMAX access system is investigated.
