The year's achievements in the areas of communication, Earth resources, environment, space sciences, transportation, and space energy are summarized and current and planned activities in these areas at the various departments and agencies of the Federal Government are summarized. Satellite power system: Concept development and evaluation program, reference system report
The Satellite Power System (SPS) Reference System is discussed and the technical and operational information required in support of environmental, socioeconomic, and comparative assessment studies are emphasized. The reference System concept features a gallium-aluminum-arsenide, and silicon solar cell options. Other aspects of an SPS are the construction of bases in space, launch and mission control bases on earth, and fleets of various transportation vehicles to support the construction and maintenance operations of the satellites

Additional analyses and investigations were conducted to further define transportation system concepts that will be needed for the developmental and operational phases of an SPS program. To accomplish these objectives, transportation systems such as the Shuttle and its derivatives were identified; new heavy lift launch vehicle (HLLV) concepts, cargo and personnel orbital transfer vehicles (EOTV and POTV), and intraorbit transfer vehicle (IOTV) concepts were evaluated; and, to a limited degree, the program implications of their operations and costs were assessed. The results of these analyses were integrated into other elements of the overall SPS concept definition studies
Biospheres and solar system exploration
The implications of biosphere technology is briefly examined. The exploration status and prospects of each world in the solar system is briefly reviewed, including the asteroid belt, the moon, and comets. Five program elements are listed as particularly critical for future interplanetary operations during the coming extraterrestrial century. They include the following: (1) a highway to Space (earth orbits); (2) Orbital Spaceports to support spacecraft assembly, storage, repair, maintenance, refueling, launch, and recovery; (3) a Bridge Between Worlds to transport cargo and crews to the moon and beyond to Mars; (4) Prospecting and Resource Utilization Systems to map and characterize the resources of planets, moons, and asteroids; and (5) Closed Ecology Biospheres. Satellite power systems (SPS) concept definition study. Volume 1: Executive summary
System definition studies resulted in a further definition of the reference system using gallium arsenide solar arrays, analysis of alternative subsystem options for the reference concept, preliminary solid state microwave concept studies, and an environmental analysis of laser transmission systems. The special emphasis studies concentrated on satellite construction, satellite construction base definition, satellite construction base construction, and rectenna construction. Major emphasis in the transportation studies was put on definition of a two stage parallel burn, vertical takeoff/horizontal landing concept. The electric orbit transfer vehicle was defined in greater detail. Program definition included cost analyses and schedule definition

Achievements of the space program are summerized in the area of communication, Earth resources, environment, space sciences, transportation, aeronautics, and space energy. Space program activities of the various deprtments and agencies of the Federal Government are discussed in relation to the agencies' goals and policies. Records of U.S. and world spacecraft launchings, successful U.S. launches for 1982, U.S. launched applications and scientific satellites and space probes since 1975, U.S. and Soviet manned spaceflights since 1961, data on U.S. space launch vehicles, and budget summaries are provided. The national space policy and the aeronautical research and technology policy statements are included

These papers comprise a peer-review selection of presentations by authors from NASA, LPI industry, and academia at the Second Conference (April 1988) on Lunar Bases and Space Activities of the 21st Century, sponsored by the NASA Office of Exploration and the Lunar Planetary Institute. These papers go into more technical depth than did those published from the first NASA-sponsored symposium on the topic, held in 1984. requires that the airports become emission-free by 2050. This thesis original contribution to
knowledge is to explore the incorporation of aviation electrification technologies, including
electric aircraft (EA), electrified ground support equipment (GSE), and airport parking electric
vehicles (EVs), into power systems, evaluating their influence on grid infrastructure and
operations, as well as their potential to support the grid operation.
A comprehensive review of aviation electrification technologies revealed a research gap in the
integration of these technologies into the power systems. The thesis contributes to electricity
network infrastructure planning for electrification of aviation and airport-based distributed
energy resources (DER) that provide ancillary services to the power grid.
A multi-objective airport microgrid planning framework is developed, comparing EA charging
strategies and revealing that battery swap performs better. Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) strategy with
parking EVs improves the microgrid's performance. A techno-economic assessment of wireless charging
systems for electric airport shuttle buses shows better economic performance than conventional
buses and other charging options.
A novel Aviation-to-Grid (A2G) flexibility concept provides frequency response services to the GB
power system using EA battery charging systems, with typical A2G service capacity showing
significant variation across eight UK airports. A deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based A2G
dispatch approach evaluates the impact of EA charger capacity on energy dispatch results, with
higher capacities leading to higher revenue and lower operation costs.
To summarise, this thesis addresses the research gaps in integrating aviation
electrification technologies into power systems, offering valuable insights for airport operators
aiming to decarbonise air transport activities through the adoption of these technologies. The
study also provides an understanding of the impacts on grid operators in terms of infrastructure
planning and operations. This comprehensive approach ensures a cohesive understanding of the
challenges and opportunities presented by aviation
electrification and its integration into power systems
Initial technical environmental, and economic evaluation of space solar power concepts. Volume 2: Detailed report
The SPS concepts which appear to be technically feasible are discussed in terms of the economic viability and competitive costs with other energy sources. The concepts discussed include: power station, microwave reception and conversion, space construction and maintenance, space transportation, and program costs and analysis. The conclusions presented include: (1) The maximum output of an individual microwave transmission link to earth is about 5 GW. (2) The mass of 10 GW SPS is between 47,000,000 and 124,000,00 kg. (3) The silicon solar cell arrays make up well over half the weight and cost of the satellite. (4) The SPS in equatorial orbit will be eclipsed by the earth and by other satellites
