A novel filter for block-based motion estimation
Noises, in the form of false motion vectors, cannot be avoided while capturing block motion vectors using block based motion estimation techniques. Similar noises are further introduced when the technique of global motion compensation is applied to obtain 'true' object motion from video sequences, where both the camera and object motions are present. We observe that the performance of the mean and the median filters in removing false motion vectors, for estimating 'true' object motion, is not satisfactory, especially when the size of the object is significantly smaller than the scene. In this paper we introduce a novel filter, named as the Mean-Accumulated-Thresholded (MAT) filter, in order to capture 'true' object motion vectors from video sequences with or without the camera motion (zoom and/or pan). Experimental results on representative standard video sequences are included to establish the superiority of our filter compared with the traditional median and mean filters
Multi Stage based Time Series Analysis of User Activity on Touch Sensitive Surfaces in Highly Noise Susceptible Environments
This article proposes a multistage framework for time series analysis of user
activity on touch sensitive surfaces in noisy environments. Here multiple
methods are put together in multi stage framework; including moving average,
moving median, linear regression, kernel density estimation, partial
differential equations and Kalman filter. The proposed three stage filter
consisting of partial differential equation based denoising, Kalman filter and
moving average method provides ~25% better noise reduction than other methods
according to Mean Squared Error (MSE) criterion in highly noise susceptible
environments. Apart from synthetic data, we also obtained real world data like
hand writing, finger/stylus drags etc. on touch screens in the presence of high
noise such as unauthorized charger noise or display noise and validated our
algorithms. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm performs qualitatively better
than the existing solutions for touch panels of the high end hand held devices

Sparse optical flow regularisation for real-time visual tracking
Optical flow can greatly improve the robustness of visual tracking algorithms. While dense optical flow algorithms have various applications, they can not be used for real-time solutions without resorting to GPU calculations. Furthermore, most optical flow algorithms fail in challenging lighting environments due to the violation of the brightness constraint. We propose a simple but effective iterative regularisation scheme for real-time, sparse optical flow algorithms, that is shown to be robust to sudden illumination changes and can handle large displacements. The algorithm proves to outperform well known techniques in real life video sequences, while being much faster to calculate. Our solution increases the robustness of a real-time particle filter based tracking application, consuming only a fraction of the available CPU power. Furthermore, a new and realistic optical flow dataset with annotated ground truth is created and made freely available for research purposes
Towards efficient music genre classification using FastMap
Automatic genre classification aims to correctly categorize an unknown recording with a music genre. Recent studies use the Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence to estimate music similarity then perform classification using k-nearest neighbours (k-NN). However, this approach is not practical for large databases. We propose an efficient genre classifier that addresses the scalability problem. It uses a combination of modified FastMap algorithm and KL divergence to return the nearest neighbours then use 1- NN for classification. Our experiments showed that high accuracies are obtained while performing classification in less than 1/20 second per track
Impulsive noise removal from color images with morphological filtering
This paper deals with impulse noise removal from color images. The proposed
noise removal algorithm employs a novel approach with morphological filtering
for color image denoising; that is, detection of corrupted pixels and removal
of the detected noise by means of morphological filtering. With the help of
computer simulation we show that the proposed algorithm can effectively remove
impulse noise. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared in terms
of image restoration metrics and processing speed with that of common
