    Analysis of a Reputation System for Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks with Liars

    The application of decentralized reputation systems is a promising approach to ensure cooperation and fairness, as well as to address random failures and malicious attacks in Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks. However, they are potentially vulnerable to liars. With our work, we provide a first step to analyzing robustness of a reputation system based on a deviation test. Using a mean-field approach to our stochastic process model, we show that liars have no impact unless their number exceeds a certain threshold (phase transition). We give precise formulae for the critical values and thus provide guidelines for an optimal choice of parameters.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure

    Fault-tolerant formation driving mechanism designed for heterogeneous MAVs-UGVs groups

    A fault-tolerant method for stabilization and navigation of 3D heterogeneous formations is proposed in this paper. The presented Model Predictive Control (MPC) based approach enables to deploy compact formations of closely cooperating autonomous aerial and ground robots in surveillance scenarios without the necessity of a precise external localization. Instead, the proposed method relies on a top-view visual relative localization provided by the micro aerial vehicles flying above the ground robots and on a simple yet stable visual based navigation using images from an onboard monocular camera. The MPC based schema together with a fault detection and recovery mechanism provide a robust solution applicable in complex environments with static and dynamic obstacles. The core of the proposed leader-follower based formation driving method consists in a representation of the entire 3D formation as a convex hull projected along a desired path that has to be followed by the group. Such an approach provides non-collision solution and respects requirements of the direct visibility between the team members. The uninterrupted visibility is crucial for the employed top-view localization and therefore for the stabilization of the group. The proposed formation driving method and the fault recovery mechanisms are verified by simulations and hardware experiments presented in the paper

    A Deep Q-Learning based, Base-Station Connectivity-Aware, Decentralized Pheromone Mobility Model for Autonomous UAV Networks

    UAV networks consisting of low SWaP (size, weight, and power), fixed-wing UAVs are used in many applications, including area monitoring, search and rescue, surveillance, and tracking. Performing these operations efficiently requires a scalable, decentralized, autonomous UAV network architecture with high network connectivity. Whereas fast area coverage is needed for quickly sensing the area, strong node degree and base station (BS) connectivity are needed for UAV control and coordination and for transmitting sensed information to the BS in real time. However, the area coverage and connectivity exhibit a fundamental trade-off: maintaining connectivity restricts the UAVs' ability to explore. In this paper, we first present a node degree and BS connectivity-aware distributed pheromone (BS-CAP) mobility model to autonomously coordinate the UAV movements in a decentralized UAV network. This model maintains a desired connectivity among 1-hop neighbors and to the BS while achieving fast area coverage. Next, we propose a deep Q-learning policy based BS-CAP model (BSCAP-DQN) to further tune and improve the coverage and connectivity trade-off. Since it is not practical to know the complete topology of such a network in real time, the proposed mobility models work online, are fully distributed, and rely on neighborhood information. Our simulations demonstrate that both proposed models achieve efficient area coverage and desired node degree and BS connectivity, improving significantly over existing schemes

    Decentralized Hybrid Formation Control of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    This paper presents a decentralized hybrid supervisory control approach for a team of unmanned helicopters that are involved in a leader-follower formation mission. Using a polar partitioning technique, the motion dynamics of the follower helicopters are abstracted to finite state machines. Then, a discrete supervisor is designed in a modular way for different components of the formation mission including reaching the formation, keeping the formation, and collision avoidance. Furthermore, a formal technique is developed to design the local supervisors decentralizedly, so that the team of helicopters as whole, can cooperatively accomplish a collision-free formation task

    Decentralized 3D Collision Avoidance for Multiple UAVs in Outdoor Environments

    The use of multiple aerial vehicles for autonomous missions is turning into commonplace. In many of these applications, the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have to cooperate and navigate in a shared airspace, becoming 3D collision avoidance a relevant issue. Outdoor scenarios impose additional challenges: (i) accurate positioning systems are costly; (ii) communication can be unreliable or delayed; and (iii) external conditions like wind gusts affect UAVs’ maneuverability. In this paper, we present 3D-SWAP, a decentralized algorithm for 3D collision avoidance with multiple UAVs. 3D-SWAP operates reactively without high computational requirements and allows UAVs to integrate measurements from their local sensors with positions of other teammates within communication range. We tested 3D-SWAP with our team of custom-designed UAVs. First, we used a Software-In-The-Loop simulator for system integration and evaluation. Second, we run field experiments with up to three UAVs in an outdoor scenario with uncontrolled conditions (i.e., noisy positioning systems, wind gusts, etc).
