Fast Routing Table Construction Using Small Messages
We describe a distributed randomized algorithm computing approximate
distances and routes that approximate shortest paths. Let n denote the number
of nodes in the graph, and let HD denote the hop diameter of the graph, i.e.,
the diameter of the graph when all edges are considered to have unit weight.
Given 0 < eps <= 1/2, our algorithm runs in weak-O(n^(1/2 + eps) + HD)
communication rounds using messages of O(log n) bits and guarantees a stretch
of O(eps^(-1) log eps^(-1)) with high probability. This is the first
distributed algorithm approximating weighted shortest paths that uses small
messages and runs in weak-o(n) time (in graphs where HD in weak-o(n)). The time
complexity nearly matches the lower bounds of weak-Omega(sqrt(n) + HD) in the
small-messages model that hold for stateless routing (where routing decisions
do not depend on the traversed path) as well as approximation of the weigthed
diameter. Our scheme replaces the original identifiers of the nodes by labels
of size O(log eps^(-1) log n). We show that no algorithm that keeps the
original identifiers and runs for weak-o(n) rounds can achieve a
polylogarithmic approximation ratio.
Variations of our techniques yield a number of fast distributed approximation
algorithms solving related problems using small messages. Specifically, we
present algorithms that run in weak-O(n^(1/2 + eps) + HD) rounds for a given 0
< eps <= 1/2, and solve, with high probability, the following problems:
- O(eps^(-1))-approximation for the Generalized Steiner Forest (the running
time in this case has an additive weak-O(t^(1 + 2eps)) term, where t is the
number of terminals);
- O(eps^(-2))-approximation of weighted distances, using node labels of size
O(eps^(-1) log n) and weak-O(n^(eps)) bits of memory per node;
- O(eps^(-1))-approximation of the weighted diameter;

Fast Distributed Approximation for Max-Cut
Finding a maximum cut is a fundamental task in many computational settings.
Surprisingly, it has been insufficiently studied in the classic distributed
settings, where vertices communicate by synchronously sending messages to their
neighbors according to the underlying graph, known as the or
models. We amend this by obtaining almost optimal
algorithms for Max-Cut on a wide class of graphs in these models. In
particular, for any , we develop randomized approximation
algorithms achieving a ratio of to the optimum for Max-Cut on
bipartite graphs in the model, and on general graphs in the
model.
We further present efficient deterministic algorithms, including a
-approximation for Max-Dicut in our models, thus improving the best known
(randomized) ratio of . Our algorithms make non-trivial use of the greedy
approach of Buchbinder et al. (SIAM Journal on Computing, 2015) for maximizing
an unconstrained (non-monotone) submodular function, which may be of
independent interest
Super-Fast Distributed Algorithms for Metric Facility Location
This paper presents a distributed O(1)-approximation algorithm, with
expected- running time, in the model for
the metric facility location problem on a size- clique network. Though
metric facility location has been considered by a number of researchers in
low-diameter settings, this is the first sub-logarithmic-round algorithm for
the problem that yields an O(1)-approximation in the setting of non-uniform
facility opening costs. In order to obtain this result, our paper makes three
main technical contributions. First, we show a new lower bound for metric
facility location, extending the lower bound of B\u{a}doiu et al. (ICALP 2005)
that applies only to the special case of uniform facility opening costs. Next,
we demonstrate a reduction of the distributed metric facility location problem
to the problem of computing an O(1)-ruling set of an appropriate spanning
subgraph. Finally, we present a sub-logarithmic-round (in expectation)
algorithm for computing a 2-ruling set in a spanning subgraph of a clique. Our
algorithm accomplishes this by using a combination of randomized and

On the Complexity of Local Distributed Graph Problems
This paper is centered on the complexity of graph problems in the
well-studied LOCAL model of distributed computing, introduced by Linial [FOCS
'87]. It is widely known that for many of the classic distributed graph
problems (including maximal independent set (MIS) and -vertex
coloring), the randomized complexity is at most polylogarithmic in the size
of the network, while the best deterministic complexity is typically
. Understanding and narrowing down this exponential gap
is considered to be one of the central long-standing open questions in the area
of distributed graph algorithms. We investigate the problem by introducing a
complexity-theoretic framework that allows us to shed some light on the role of
randomness in the LOCAL model. We define the SLOCAL model as a sequential
version of the LOCAL model. Our framework allows us to prove completeness
results with respect to the class of problems which can be solved efficiently
in the SLOCAL model, implying that if any of the complete problems can be
solved deterministically in rounds in the LOCAL model, we can
deterministically solve all efficient SLOCAL-problems (including MIS and
-coloring) in rounds in the LOCAL model. We show
that a rather rudimentary looking graph coloring problem is complete in the
above sense: Color the nodes of a graph with colors red and blue such that each
node of sufficiently large polylogarithmic degree has at least one neighbor of
each color. The problem admits a trivial zero-round randomized solution. The
result can be viewed as showing that the only obstacle to getting efficient
determinstic algorithms in the LOCAL model is an efficient algorithm to
approximately round fractional values into integer values
A Faster Distributed Single-Source Shortest Paths Algorithm
We devise new algorithms for the single-source shortest paths (SSSP) problem
with non-negative edge weights in the CONGEST model of distributed computing.
While close-to-optimal solutions, in terms of the number of rounds spent by the
algorithm, have recently been developed for computing SSSP approximately, the
fastest known exact algorithms are still far away from matching the lower bound
of rounds by Peleg and Rubinovich [SIAM
Journal on Computing 2000], where is the number of nodes in the network
and is its diameter. The state of the art is Elkin's randomized algorithm
[STOC 2017] that performs rounds. We
significantly improve upon this upper bound with our two new randomized
algorithms for polynomially bounded integer edge weights, the first performing
rounds and the second performing rounds. Our bounds also compare favorably to the
independent result by Ghaffari and Li [STOC 2018]. As side results, we obtain a
-approximation -round algorithm for directed SSSP and a new work/depth trade-off for exact

Parameterized Distributed Algorithms
In this work, we initiate a thorough study of graph optimization problems parameterized by the output size in the distributed setting. In such a problem, an algorithm decides whether a solution of size bounded by k exists and if so, it finds one. We study fundamental problems, including Minimum Vertex Cover (MVC), Maximum Independent Set (MaxIS), Maximum Matching (MaxM), and many others, in both the LOCAL and CONGEST distributed computation models. We present lower bounds for the round complexity of solving parameterized problems in both models, together with optimal and near-optimal upper bounds.
Our results extend beyond the scope of parameterized problems. We show that any LOCAL (1+epsilon)-approximation algorithm for the above problems must take Omega(epsilon^{-1}) rounds. Joined with the (epsilon^{-1}log n)^{O(1)} rounds algorithm of [Ghaffari et al., 2017] and the Omega (sqrt{(log n)/(log log n)}) lower bound of [Fabian Kuhn et al., 2016], the lower bounds match the upper bound up to polynomial factors in both parameters. We also show that our parameterized approach reduces the runtime of exact and approximate CONGEST algorithms for MVC and MaxM if the optimal solution is small, without knowing its size beforehand. Finally, we propose the first o(n^2) rounds CONGEST algorithms that approximate MVC within a factor strictly smaller than 2
Distributed Approximation of Minimum Routing Cost Trees
We study the NP-hard problem of approximating a Minimum Routing Cost Spanning
Tree in the message passing model with limited bandwidth (CONGEST model). In
this problem one tries to find a spanning tree of a graph over nodes
that minimizes the sum of distances between all pairs of nodes. In the
considered model every node can transmit a different (but short) message to
each of its neighbors in each synchronous round. We provide a randomized
-approximation with runtime for
unweighted graphs. Here, is the diameter of . This improves over both,
the (expected) approximation factor and the runtime
of the best previously known algorithm.
Due to stating our results in a very general way, we also derive an (optimal)
runtime of when considering -approximations as done by the
best previously known algorithm. In addition we derive a deterministic

Distributed Connectivity Decomposition
We present time-efficient distributed algorithms for decomposing graphs with
large edge or vertex connectivity into multiple spanning or dominating trees,
respectively. As their primary applications, these decompositions allow us to
achieve information flow with size close to the connectivity by parallelizing
it along the trees. More specifically, our distributed decomposition algorithms
are as follows:
(I) A decomposition of each undirected graph with vertex-connectivity
into (fractionally) vertex-disjoint weighted dominating trees with total weight
, in rounds.
(II) A decomposition of each undirected graph with edge-connectivity
into (fractionally) edge-disjoint weighted spanning trees with total
weight , in
rounds.
We also show round complexity lower bounds of

for the above two decompositions,
using techniques of [Das Sarma et al., STOC'11]. Moreover, our
vertex-connectivity decomposition extends to centralized algorithms and
improves the time complexity of [Censor-Hillel et al., SODA'14] from

As corollaries, we also get distributed oblivious routing broadcast with
-competitive edge-congestion and -competitive
vertex-congestion. Furthermore, the vertex connectivity decomposition leads to
near-time-optimal -approximation of vertex connectivity: centralized
