    Time-Varying Graphs and Dynamic Networks

    The past few years have seen intensive research efforts carried out in some apparently unrelated areas of dynamic systems -- delay-tolerant networks, opportunistic-mobility networks, social networks -- obtaining closely related insights. Indeed, the concepts discovered in these investigations can be viewed as parts of the same conceptual universe; and the formal models proposed so far to express some specific concepts are components of a larger formal description of this universe. The main contribution of this paper is to integrate the vast collection of concepts, formalisms, and results found in the literature into a unified framework, which we call TVG (for time-varying graphs). Using this framework, it is possible to express directly in the same formalism not only the concepts common to all those different areas, but also those specific to each. Based on this definitional work, employing both existing results and original observations, we present a hierarchical classification of TVGs; each class corresponds to a significant property examined in the distributed computing literature. We then examine how TVGs can be used to study the evolution of network properties, and propose different techniques, depending on whether the indicators for these properties are a-temporal (as in the majority of existing studies) or temporal.     Distributed and Centralized Task Allocation: When and Where to Use Them

    Self-organisation is frequently advocated as the solution for managing large, dynamic systems. Distributed algorithms are implicitly designed for infinitely large problems, while small systems are regarded as being controllable using traditional, centralised approaches. Many real-world systems, however, do not fit conveniently into these "small" or "large" categories, resulting in a range of cases where the optimal solution is ambiguous. This difficulty is exacerbated by enthusiasts of either approach constructing problems that suit their preferred control architecture. We address this ambiguity by building an abstract model of task allocation in a community of specialised agents. We are inspired by the problem of work distribution in distributed satellite systems, but the model is also relevant to the resource allocation problems in distributed robotics, autonomic computing and wireless sensor networks. We compare the behaviour of a self-organising, market-based task allocation strategy to a classical approach that uses a central controller with global knowledge. The objective is not to prove one mechanism inherently superior to the other; instead we are interested in the regions of problem space where each of them dominates. Simulation is used to explore the trade-off between energy consumption and robustness in a system of intermediate size, with fixed communication costs and varying rates of component failure. We identify boundaries between regions in the parameter space where one or the other architecture will be favoured. This allows us to derive guidelines for system designers, thus contributing to the development of a disciplined approach to controlling distributed systems using self-organising mechanisms

    A Priority-based Fair Queuing (PFQ) Model for Wireless Healthcare System

    Healthcare is a very active research area, primarily due to the increase in the elderly population that leads to increasing number of emergency situations that require urgent actions. In recent years some of wireless networked medical devices were equipped with different sensors to measure and report on vital signs of patient remotely. The most important sensors are Heart Beat Rate (ECG), Pressure and Glucose sensors. However, the strict requirements and real-time nature of medical applications dictate the extreme importance and need for appropriate Quality of Service (QoS), fast and accurate delivery of a patient’s measurements in reliable e-Health ecosystem. As the elderly age and older adult population is increasing (65 years and above) due to the advancement in medicine and medical care in the last two decades; high QoS and reliable e-health ecosystem has become a major challenge in Healthcare especially for patients who require continuous monitoring and attention. Nevertheless, predictions have indicated that elderly population will be approximately 2 billion in developing countries by 2050 where availability of medical staff shall be unable to cope with this growth and emergency cases that need immediate intervention. On the other side, limitations in communication networks capacity, congestions and the humongous increase of devices, applications and IOT using the available communication networks add extra layer of challenges on E-health ecosystem such as time constraints, quality of measurements and signals reaching healthcare centres. Hence this research has tackled the delay and jitter parameters in E-health M2M wireless communication and succeeded in reducing them in comparison to current available models. The novelty of this research has succeeded in developing a new Priority Queuing model ‘’Priority Based-Fair Queuing’’ (PFQ) where a new priority level and concept of ‘’Patient’s Health Record’’ (PHR) has been developed and integrated with the Priority Parameters (PP) values of each sensor to add a second level of priority. The results and data analysis performed on the PFQ model under different scenarios simulating real M2M E-health environment have revealed that the PFQ has outperformed the results obtained from simulating the widely used current models such as First in First Out (FIFO) and Weight Fair Queuing (WFQ). PFQ model has improved transmission of ECG sensor data by decreasing delay and jitter in emergency cases by 83.32% and 75.88% respectively in comparison to FIFO and 46.65% and 60.13% with respect to WFQ model. Similarly, in pressure sensor the improvements were 82.41% and 71.5% and 68.43% and 73.36% in comparison to FIFO and WFQ respectively. Data transmission were also improved in the Glucose sensor by 80.85% and 64.7% and 92.1% and 83.17% in comparison to FIFO and WFQ respectively. However, non-emergency cases data transmission using PFQ model was negatively impacted and scored higher rates than FIFO and WFQ since PFQ tends to give higher priority to emergency cases. Thus, a derivative from the PFQ model has been developed to create a new version namely “Priority Based-Fair Queuing-Tolerated Delay” (PFQ-TD) to balance the data transmission between emergency and non-emergency cases where tolerated delay in emergency cases has been considered. PFQ-TD has succeeded in balancing fairly this issue and reducing the total average delay and jitter of emergency and non-emergency cases in all sensors and keep them within the acceptable allowable standards. PFQ-TD has improved the overall average delay and jitter in emergency and non-emergency cases among all sensors by 41% and 84% respectively in comparison to PFQ model

    Mapping of portable parallel programs

    An efficient parallel program designed for a parallel architecture includes a detailed outline of accurate assignments of concurrent computations onto processors, and data transfers onto communication links, such that the overall execution time is minimized. This process may be complex depending on the application task and the target multiprocessor architecture. Furthermore, this process is to be repeated for every different architecture even though the application task may be the same. Consequently, this has a major impact on the ever increasing cost of software development for multiprocessor systems. A remedy for this problem would be to design portable parallel programs which can be mapped efficiently onto any computer system. In this dissertation, we present a portable programming tool called Cluster-M. The three components of Cluster-M are the Specification Module, the Representation Module, and the Mapping Module. In the Specification Module, for a given problem, a machine-independent program is generated and represented in the form of a clustered task graph called Spec graph. Similarly, in the Representation Module, for a given architecture or heterogeneous suite of computers, a clustered system graph called Rep graph is generated. The Mapping Module is responsible for efficient mapping of Spec graphs onto Rep graphs. As part of this module, we present the first algorithm which produces a near-optimal mapping of an arbitrary non-uniform machine-independent task graph with M modules, onto an arbitrary non-uniform task-independent system graph having N processors, in 0(M P) time, where P = max(M, N). Our experimental results indicate that Cluster-M produces better or similar mapping results compared to other leading techniques which work only for restricted task or system graphs

    Efficient Approximation Algorithms for Multi-Antennae Largest Weight Data Retrieval

    In a mobile network, wireless data broadcast over mm channels (frequencies) is a powerful means for distributed dissemination of data to clients who access the channels through multi-antennae equipped on their mobile devices. The δ\delta-antennae largest weight data retrieval (δ\deltaALWDR) problem is to compute a schedule for downloading a subset of data items that has a maximum total weight using δ\delta antennae in a given time interval. In this paper, we propose a ratio 11eϵ1-\frac{1}{e}-\epsilon approximation algorithm for the δ\delta-antennae largest weight data retrieval (δ\deltaALWDR) problem that has the same ratio as the known result but a significantly improved time complexity of O(21ϵ1ϵm7T3.5L)O(2^{\frac{1}{\epsilon}}\frac{1}{\epsilon}m^{7}T^{3.5}L) from O(ϵ3.5m3.5ϵT3.5L)O(\epsilon^{3.5}m^{\frac{3.5}{\epsilon}}T^{3.5}L) when δ=1\delta=1 \cite{lu2014data}. To our knowledge, our algorithm represents the first ratio 11eϵ1-\frac{1}{e}-\epsilon approximation solution to δ\deltaALWDR for the general case of arbitrary δ\delta. To achieve this, we first give a ratio 11e1-\frac{1}{e} algorithm for the γ\gamma-separated δ\deltaALWDR (δ\deltaAγ\gammaLWDR) with runtime O(m7T3.5L)O(m^{7}T^{3.5}L), under the assumption that every data item appears at most once in each segment of δ\deltaAγ\gammaLWDR, for any input of maximum length LL on mm channels in TT time slots. Then, we show that we can retain the same ratio for δ\deltaAγ\gammaLWDR without this assumption at the cost of increased time complexity to O(2γm7T3.5L)O(2^{\gamma}m^{7}T^{3.5}L). This result immediately yields an approximation solution of same ratio and time complexity for δ\deltaALWDR, presenting a significant improvement of the known time complexity of ratio 11eϵ1-\frac{1}{e}-\epsilon approximation to the problem
