    Towards a holistic understanding of the role of green infrastructure in improving urban air quality

    Air pollution has been identified as a major problem in modern societies, threatening urban population health. Pedestrians, in particular, are directly exposed to one of the main sources of air pollutants: road transport, which is concentrated in proximity to the road, worsening the air. Green infrastructure (GI) has been promoted as a natural method for reducing exposure to local street air pollutants and providing additional Ecosystem Services with a range of environmental, social and economic benefits for citizens. The effectiveness of GI for improving air quality depends on the spatio-temporal context and the species-specific characteristics of the GI. Urban planting could maximise this benefit by a holistic understanding of the effects of GI in cities, balancing its benefits and constraints. However, little is currently known about the application of GI design and planning with regard to air pollution mitigation. Moreover, there is little agreement on the quantifiable effectiveness of GI in improving street air quality as its effectiveness is highly context dependent. Holistic guidance is therefore needed to inform practitioners of site- and species- specifics, trade-offs, and GI maintenance considerations for successful urban planting. This research reviews the academic literature addressing GI-related characteristics in streets, creating a holistic framework to help guide decision-makers on using GI solutions to improve air quality. Additionally, this research aims to understand how and which GI, along with other local characteristics, influence pedestrian air quality and how these characteristics are considered in real-world practice within the United Kingdom. This research progresses through three stages: First, the mechanisms by which GI is considered to influence air quality were identified through literature reviews. A specific literature review was then conducted for each mechanism to extract the associated GI and spatial characteristics that affect the potential for GI to mitigate urban air pollution. In the second stage, this list of characteristics, together with other Ecosystem Services, was discussed in consultation with practitioners in the UK. A survey was conducted to explore and evaluate the recommendations and resources available for planning plantings, as well as the practitioners’ knowledge about the characteristics associated with mitigating air pollution. Supported by results from the survey and the literature reviews, the third stage evaluated (validated) an easy-to-use computational model for its potential use in improving planting decisions for air pollution mitigation. Green infrastructure influences air quality by providing surfaces for pollutant deposition and absorption, effects on airflow and dispersion, and biogenic emissions. The relationship between the specific GI and the spatio-temporal context also influences air quality. Street structure, weather variables, and the type, shape and size of GI influence the dispersion of pollutants, with micro-and macro-morphological traits additionally influencing particulate deposition and gas absorption. In addition, maintaining GI lessens air quality deterioration by controlling biogenic emissions. According to participants in the survey, aesthetics were the principal drivers of urban planting, followed by improving well-being and increasing biodiversity and air pollution mitigation as a lesser priority. Characteristics such as airflow manipulation, leaf surface traits, and biogenic emissions were the less important influences in planting decisions in the UK, despite the fact that these characteristics influence air quality. Perhaps, a lack of communication of current information and low confidence about which specific characteristics have a tangible effect on air quality reduces the incorporation of GI for air pollution mitigation purposes. Uncertainties exist about the quantification of pollutants removed by GI. Field campaigns and computational models still need improvement to address the effectiveness of GI in real-world environments adequately and also to understand whether GI can exert a significant effect on pollutant levels under real-world conditions. This research showed that a promising and easy-to-use model used to evaluate the effectiveness of trees in removing particles was not an acceptable model to study the effect of GI on streets. The validation results showed a poor agreement between wind tunnel data and the model results. More effort is needed to develop better modelling tools that can quantify the actual effect of GI on improving street air quality. This research contributes to the air pollution mitigation field, explicitly helping to inform decision-making for more health-promoting urban settings by optimising the expected benefits of GI through a holistic understanding of their impacts. Facilitating the communication of current evidence through a holistic guide that considers both the benefits and trade-offs of planting decisions for air quality improvement.     The Seventh International Symposium Monitoring of Mediterranean Coastal Areas. Problems and Measurement Techniques (Livorno, Italy June 19-20-21, 2018) was organized by the CNR-IBIMET in collaboration with the City of Livorno, the LEM Foundation, the FCS Foundation and the Compagnia dei Portuali di Livorno, with the patronage by Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Accademia dei Georgofili, The University of Florence, the Tuscany Region and the North Tyrrhenian Sea Port System Authority. The Symposium, in which scholars from all over the Mediterranean basin participated, was an opportunity to illustrate new proposals and to promote actions to protect the Mediterranean coastal marine environment. In particular, the event was characterized by the search for technical and instrumental solutions to problems related to: energy production in the coastal area, morphology and evolution of coastlines, flora and fauna of the littoral system, management and integrated coastal protection, coastline geography, human influence on coastal landscape

While results from computer science provide much initial support for resolution, adaptation is unavoidable and most importantly, feedback from addressing engineering challenges drives fundamental computer-science research.     Large scale dynamics of the atmosphere: Planetary waves

    Planetary waves (PW) are global scale waves in the atmosphere, which are known to considerably impact weather patterns in the midlatitudes in the troposphere and the ozone distribution in the stratosphere. PW play an important role in coupling middle atmosphere dynamics. Due to the fact that climate change causes a decrease of the meridional temperature gradient, the strength of the zonal wind might decrease. This should, in turn, change the planetary wave activity (PWA). In order to quantify possible changes in the PWA we analyze ERA–Interim temperature data (10 m to 65 km height) on the Northern Hemisphere and calculate the so-called dynamical activity index (DAI) as measure for the PWA. We analyze the PWA to find indications for PWA changes and variability. We also use rotational temperature data from hydroxyl airglow measurements at UFS Schneefernerhaus (Germany) embedded in the international Network for the Detection of Mesospheric Change (NDMC) in the upper mesosphere/lower thermosphere (UMLT). We find an indication for a significant increase of the PWA in the stratosphere. The change of the PWA with higher zonal wavenumbers turns out to be strongest. This finding is in agreement with the expectation that a weakening of the meridional temperature gradient leads to improved vertical propagation conditions for planetary waves. With the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) we are able to extract non-stationary signals of the PWA time series. We further find that longer-term oscillations (QBO, ENSO and solar cycles) have a noticeable impact on the PW variability in all considered heights. Next to the 11-year cycle that is related to the sunspot-cycle in many studies, we also find a pronounced quasi-22-year signal. We tentatively interpret this signal as being due to the solar-magnetic-field (“Hale cycle”)

    Transcendence: boundaries, thresholds and the fourth dimension in the composite 'musical novel'

    This PhD has two parts: a composite novel (Transcendence); and an accompanying essay, which explores creative and critical strategies vital to the novel’s writing. Transcendence follows characters who cross boundaries and thresholds of different kinds, to undertake life-changing journeys: the Anglo Saxon Cwenhild must choose between art and marriage; Jules, a pregnant man, becomes the subject of an unlawful experiment; Izzy and Mei plan escape from their futuristic cities, travelling through ruined dystopian landscape and magical forest in search of freedom; and an anthrobot called Dottie reminisces about the old world which gave way to the new. Forgotten women are resurrected, as the characters’ stories overlap in chance encounters which breach boundaries and cross thresholds in space and time. Transcendence is inspired by the composite novels of David Mitchell, in its long timeline, multiple narrators, composite form, and cross-genre elements. The novel explores how all manner of boundaries and thresholds can be creatively crafted to push both narrative form and content in new directions. Transcendence is accompanied by a 20,000-word critical essay. The essay explores the musical devices I employed whilst writing (form, dissonance, silence, motif, coda and aleatoric composition), adopting Emily Petermann’s term the ‘musical novel’ to examine how these relate to fiction. I identify a beyond-boundary landscape in the fourth dimension, and suggest how Fortean aspects of the fourth dimension (ghosts, timeslips, alien abduction and the magical forest) can contribute fresh elements to story. I conclude that musical form and the fourth dimension present all kinds of boundaries and thresholds, which inspire new interpretations of structure and content in cross-genre pan-historical composite narrative

    The Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade and the Society for Aesthetics of Architecture and Visual Arts of Serbia (DEAVUS) are proud to be able to organize the 21st ICA Congress on “Possible Worlds of Contemporary Aesthetics: Aesthetics Between History, Geography and Media”. We are proud to announce that we received over 500 submissions from 56 countries, which makes this Congress the greatest gathering of aestheticians in this region in the last 40 years. The ICA 2019 Belgrade aims to map out contemporary aesthetics practices in a vivid dialogue of aestheticians, philosophers, art theorists, architecture theorists, culture theorists, media theorists, artists, media entrepreneurs, architects, cultural activists and researchers in the fields of humanities and social sciences. More precisely, the goal is to map the possible worlds of contemporary aesthetics in Europe, Asia, North and South America, Africa and Australia. The idea is to show, interpret and map the unity and diverseness in aesthetic thought, expression, research, and philosophies on our shared planet. Our goal is to promote a dialogue concerning aesthetics in those parts of the world that have not been involved with the work of the International Association for Aesthetics to this day. Global dialogue, understanding and cooperation are what we aim to achieve. That said, the 21st ICA is the first Congress to highlight the aesthetic issues of marginalised regions that have not been fully involved in the work of the IAA. This will be accomplished, among others, via thematic round tables discussing contemporary aesthetics in East Africa and South America. Today, aesthetics is recognized as an important philosophical, theoretical and even scientific discipline that aims at interpreting the complexity of phenomena in our contemporary world. People rather talk about possible worlds or possible aesthetic regimes rather than a unique and consistent philosophical, scientific or theoretical discipline
