    Mining Meaning from Wikipedia

    Wikipedia is a goldmine of information; not just for its many readers, but also for the growing community of researchers who recognize it as a resource of exceptional scale and utility. It represents a vast investment of manual effort and judgment: a huge, constantly evolving tapestry of concepts and relations that is being applied to a host of tasks. This article provides a comprehensive description of this work. It focuses on research that extracts and makes use of the concepts, relations, facts and descriptions found in Wikipedia, and organizes the work into four broad categories: applying Wikipedia to natural language processing; using it to facilitate information retrieval and information extraction; and as a resource for ontology building. The article addresses how Wikipedia is being used as is, how it is being improved and adapted, and how it is being combined with other structures to create entirely new resources. We identify the research groups and individuals involved, and how their work has developed in the last few years.     Adaptive Semantic Annotation of Entity and Concept Mentions in Text

    The recent years have seen an increase in interest for knowledge repositories that are useful across applications, in contrast to the creation of ad hoc or application-specific databases. These knowledge repositories figure as a central provider of unambiguous identifiers and semantic relationships between entities. As such, these shared entity descriptions serve as a common vocabulary to exchange and organize information in different formats and for different purposes. Therefore, there has been remarkable interest in systems that are able to automatically tag textual documents with identifiers from shared knowledge repositories so that the content in those documents is described in a vocabulary that is unambiguously understood across applications. Tagging textual documents according to these knowledge bases is a challenging task. It involves recognizing the entities and concepts that have been mentioned in a particular passage and attempting to resolve eventual ambiguity of language in order to choose one of many possible meanings for a phrase. There has been substantial work on recognizing and disambiguating entities for specialized applications, or constrained to limited entity types and particular types of text. In the context of shared knowledge bases, since each application has potentially very different needs, systems must have unprecedented breadth and flexibility to ensure their usefulness across applications. Documents may exhibit different language and discourse characteristics, discuss very diverse topics, or require the focus on parts of the knowledge repository that are inherently harder to disambiguate. In practice, for developers looking for a system to support their use case, is often unclear if an existing solution is applicable, leading those developers to trial-and-error and ad hoc usage of multiple systems in an attempt to achieve their objective. In this dissertation, I propose a conceptual model that unifies related techniques in this space under a common multi-dimensional framework that enables the elucidation of strengths and limitations of each technique, supporting developers in their search for a suitable tool for their needs. Moreover, the model serves as the basis for the development of flexible systems that have the ability of supporting document tagging for different use cases. I describe such an implementation, DBpedia Spotlight, along with extensions that we performed to the knowledge base DBpedia to support this implementation. I report evaluations of this tool on several well known data sets, and demonstrate applications to diverse use cases for further validation

    Resolving pronominal anaphora using commonsense knowledge

    Coreference resolution is the task of resolving all expressions in a text that refer to the same entity. Such expressions are often used in writing and speech as shortcuts to avoid repetition. The most frequent form of coreference is the anaphor. To resolve anaphora not only grammatical and syntactical strategies are required, but also semantic approaches should be taken into consideration. This dissertation presents a framework for automatically resolving pronominal anaphora by integrating recent findings from the field of linguistics with new semantic features. Commonsense knowledge is the routine knowledge people have of the everyday world. Because such knowledge is widely used it is frequently omitted from social communications such as texts. It is understandable that without this knowledge computers will have difficulty making sense of textual information. In this dissertation a new set of computational and linguistic features are used in a supervised learning approach to resolve the pronominal anaphora in document. Commonsense knowledge sources such as ConceptNet and WordNet are used and similarity measures are extracted to uncover the elaborative information embedded in the words that can help in the process of anaphora resolution. The anaphoric system is tested on 350 Wall Street Journal articles from the BBN corpus. When compared with other systems available such as BART (Versley et al. 2008) and Charniak and Elsner 2009, our system performed better and also resolved a much wider range of anaphora. We were able to achieve a 92% F-measure on the BBN corpus and an average of 85% F-measure when tested on other genres of documents such as children stories and short stories selected from the web

    Language Encodes Social Network Information

    Knowledge regarding social information is commonly thought to be derived from sources such as interviews and formal relationships. Consequently, social networks can be generated from this information. Recent work has demonstrated that language statistics can explain findings often thought to primarily be explained by external factors. Three studies explored whether language implicitly comprises information that allows for extracting social networks, by testing the hypothesis that individuals who are socially related together are linguistically discussed together, as well as the hypothesis that individuals who are socially related more are linguistically discussed more. Three computational studies were conducted testing the extent to which social networks could be extracted from fiction novels. Semantic relationships revealed that MDS solutions correlated with the actual social network of characters. A human study in which participants estimated social relationships of characters matched the results obtained computationally. The results demonstrated that linguistic information encodes social relationship information

    Mapping Articles on China in Wikipedia: An Inter-Language Semantic Network Analysis

    This article describes an inter-language semantic network analysis examining the differences between articles about China in the Chinese and English versions of Wikipedia. It explores the differences in the content of Wikipedia through (a) correlation analysis of semantic networks and (b) the salience of semantic concepts through their network centralities. The results suggest there is high dissimilarity between the semantic content of the English and Chinese versions of articles on China. While both pages focused on government, population, language, character, diplomatic relations, development of the economy, and science and technology, the Chinese-speaking and English-speaking contributors framed the article on China differently—according to dissimilarities in cultures, values, interests, situations, and emotions of different language groups. This research contributes to the literature and understanding of how culture of different language groups influences the process of crowdsourcing knowledge on online collaboration platforms

    Applying Wikipedia to Interactive Information Retrieval

    There are many opportunities to improve the interactivity of information retrieval systems beyond the ubiquitous search box. One idea is to use knowledge bases—e.g. controlled vocabularies, classification schemes, thesauri and ontologies—to organize, describe and navigate the information space. These resources are popular in libraries and specialist collections, but have proven too expensive and narrow to be applied to everyday webscale search. Wikipedia has the potential to bring structured knowledge into more widespread use. This online, collaboratively generated encyclopaedia is one of the largest and most consulted reference works in existence. It is broader, deeper and more agile than the knowledge bases put forward to assist retrieval in the past. Rendering this resource machine-readable is a challenging task that has captured the interest of many researchers. Many see it as a key step required to break the knowledge acquisition bottleneck that crippled previous efforts. This thesis claims that the roadblock can be sidestepped: Wikipedia can be applied effectively to open-domain information retrieval with minimal natural language processing or information extraction. The key is to focus on gathering and applying human-readable rather than machine-readable knowledge. To demonstrate this claim, the thesis tackles three separate problems: extracting knowledge from Wikipedia; connecting it to textual documents; and applying it to the retrieval process. First, we demonstrate that a large thesaurus-like structure can be obtained directly from Wikipedia, and that accurate measures of semantic relatedness can be efficiently mined from it. Second, we show that Wikipedia provides the necessary features and training data for existing data mining techniques to accurately detect and disambiguate topics when they are mentioned in plain text. Third, we provide two systems and user studies that demonstrate the utility of the Wikipedia-derived knowledge base for interactive information retrieval
