    In fall 2014, Tyton Partners (formerly Education Growth Advisors), with support from the Joyce Foundation, conducted national research on the role and potential of instructional technology in the US adult education field. The objective was to understand the current state of the field with respect to technology readiness and the opportunities and challenges for increasing the use of technology-based instructional models within adult education. The initial publication in the series, "Part I: Interest in and Aptitude for Technology," focused on demand-side dynamics and addressed adult education administrators' and practitioners' perspectives on the role and potential of technology to support their students' needs and objectives.     Bletchley Park text: using mobile and semantic web technologies to support the post-visit use of online museum resources

    A number of technologies have been developed to support the museum visitor, with the aim of making their visit more educationally rewarding and/or entertaining. Examples include PDA-based personalized tour guides and virtual reality representations of cultural objects or scenes. Rather than supporting the actual visit, we decided to employ technology to support the post-visitor, that is, encourage follow-up activities among recent visitors to a museum. This allowed us to use the technology in a way that would not detract from the existing curated experience and allow the museum to provide access to additional heritage resources that cannot be presented during the physical visit. Within our application, called Bletchley Park Text, visitors express their interests by sending text (SMS) messages containing suggested keywords using their own mobile phone. The semantic description of the archive of resources is then used to retrieve and organize a collection of content into a personalized web site for use when they get home. Organization of the collection occurs both bottom-up from the semantic description of each item in the collection, and also top-down according to a formal representation of the overall museum story. In designing the interface we aimed to support exploration across the content archive rather than just the search and retrieval of specific resources. The service was developed for the Bletchley Park museum and has since been launched for use by all visitors

    Virtual reality in theatre education and design practice - new developments and applications

    The global use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) has already established new approaches to theatre education and research, shifting traditional methods of knowledge delivery towards a more visually enhanced experience, which is especially important for teaching scenography. In this paper, I examine the role of multimedia within the field of theatre studies, with particular focus on the theory and practice of theatre design and education. I discuss various IT applications that have transformed the way we experience, learn and co-create our cultural heritage. I explore a suite of rapidly developing communication and computer-visualization techniques that enable reciprocal exchange between students, theatre performances and artefacts. Eventually, I analyse novel technology-mediated teaching techniques that attempt to provide a new media platform for visually enhanced information transfer. My findings indicate that the recent developments in the personalization of knowledge delivery, and also in student-centred study and e-learning, necessitate the transformation of the learners from passive consumers of digital products to active and creative participants in the learning experience

    Maximizing Competency Education and Blended Learning: Insights from Experts

    In May 2014, CompetencyWorks brought together twenty-three technical assistance providers to examine their catalytic role in implementing next generation learning models, share each other's knowledge and expertise about blended learning and competency education, and discuss next steps to move the field forward with a focus on equity and quality. Our strategy maintains that by building the knowledge and networks of technical assistance providers, these groups can play an even more catalytic role in advancing the field. The objective of the convening was to help educate and level set the understanding of competency education and its design elements, as well as to build knowledge about using blended learning modalities within competency-based environments. This paper attempts to draw together the wide-ranging conversations from the convening to provide background knowledge for educators to understand what it will take to transform from traditional to personalized, competency-based systems that take full advantage of blended learning

    Student Mathematics Performance in Year One Implementation of Teach to One: Math

    This report examines mathematics test data from the first year of implementation (2012-13) of the Teach to One: Math (TtO) approach in seven urban middle schools in Chicago, New York City, and Washington D.C. Researchers addressed the question: How did Tto students' growth on the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) mathematics assessment compare with national norms?To answer this question, the researchers analyzed student performance on the MAP test, an established instrument developed by the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA). The researchers then compared these results to the national norms published by NWEA (2011). Please note that these analyses cannot attribute Tto student results to the TtO model: the data available did not permit the use of an experimental design, which would be necessary to establish a link between the implementation of the program and the student test results. While the TtO results are promising, its performance beyond one year should be analyzed using an experimental design, in order to remove unmeasured differences between TtO students and schools with an appropriate comparison sample

    In today's globalized world, the increasing need for English language ability has highlighted the necessity of good language acquisition and communication abilities. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a viable aid in the field of education, including language acquisition, as technology advances. This study does a literature review to investigate the function of AI in the development of communication skills in English language learners. The goal of this research is to look at the existing research and literature on the use of AI-based technologies in English language learning environments. The essay opens with an overview of artificial intelligence and its possible uses in education. It then looks into the various methods in which AI might help English language learners strengthen their communication skills, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The findings of this literature review suggest that AI has the potential to significantly enhance English language learners' communication skills by providing personalized and interactive learning experiences. However, further research is needed to explore the long-term effects and optimal integration of AI in language learning environments. In conclusion, this article highlights the transformative role of AI in English language education and its potential to address the diverse needs of language learners. By understanding the current state of research and exploring the opportunities and challenges presented by AI in language learning, educators and policymakers can make informed decisions to harness the benefits of AI technology and maximize its impact on developing effective communication skills among English language learners

    Educational concept mapping method based on high-frequency words and Wikipedia linkage

    We propose a computational method to support the learner's knowledge adoption based on conceptmapping relying on three perspectives of learning scenario represented by learning concept networks:learnerā€™s knowledge, learning context and learning objective. Each learning concept network isgenerated based on a set of high-frequency words from a representative text sample that are connectedbased on the shortest hyperlink chains between corresponding Wikipedia articles. The learner exploresranking-based routings connecting learning concept networks by expanding a concept map in twocomplementing learning modes: assisted construction and assistive evaluation, with focused andcontextualized emphasis. Based on the method we have implemented a prototype of an educational tooland its preliminary testing indicated that the method can well support personalized knowledge adoption.Peer reviewe
