Convolutional Color Constancy
Color constancy is the problem of inferring the color of the light that
illuminated a scene, usually so that the illumination color can be removed.
Because this problem is underconstrained, it is often solved by modeling the
statistical regularities of the colors of natural objects and illumination. In
contrast, in this paper we reformulate the problem of color constancy as a 2D
spatial localization task in a log-chrominance space, thereby allowing us to
apply techniques from object detection and structured prediction to the color
constancy problem. By directly learning how to discriminate between correctly
white-balanced images and poorly white-balanced images, our model is able to
improve performance on standard benchmarks by nearly 40%
Multi-sensor fire detection by fusing visual and non-visual flame features
This paper proposes a feature-based multi-sensor fire detector operating on ordinary video and long wave infrared (LWIR) thermal images. The detector automatically extracts hot objects from the thermal images by dynamic background subtraction and histogram-based segmentation. Analogously, moving objects are extracted from the ordinary video by intensity-based dynamic background subtraction. These hot and moving objects are then further analyzed using a set of flame features which focus on the distinctive geometric, temporal and spatial disorder characteristics of flame regions. By combining the probabilities of these fast retrievable visual and thermal features, we are able to detect the fire at an early stage. Experiments with video and LWIR sequences of lire and non-fire real case scenarios show good results in id indicate that multi-sensor fire analysis is very promising
FilteredWeb: A Framework for the Automated Search-Based Discovery of Blocked URLs
Various methods have been proposed for creating and maintaining lists of
potentially filtered URLs to allow for measurement of ongoing internet
censorship around the world. Whilst testing a known resource for evidence of
filtering can be relatively simple, given appropriate vantage points,
discovering previously unknown filtered web resources remains an open
challenge.
We present a new framework for automating the process of discovering filtered
resources through the use of adaptive queries to well-known search engines. Our
system applies information retrieval algorithms to isolate characteristic
linguistic patterns in known filtered web pages; these are then used as the
basis for web search queries. The results of these queries are then checked for
evidence of filtering, and newly discovered filtered resources are fed back
into the system to detect further filtered content.
Our implementation of this framework, applied to China as a case study, shows
that this approach is demonstrably effective at detecting significant numbers
of previously unknown filtered web pages, making a significant contribution to
the ongoing detection of internet filtering as it develops.
Our tool is currently deployed and has been used to discover 1355 domains
that are poisoned within China as of Feb 2017 - 30 times more than are
contained in the most widely-used public filter list. Of these, 759 are outside
of the Alexa Top 1000 domains list, demonstrating the capability of this
framework to find more obscure filtered content. Further, our initial analysis
of filtered URLs, and the search terms that were used to discover them, gives
further insight into the nature of the content currently being blocked in

Detecting Family Resemblance: Automated Genre Classification.
This paper presents results in automated genre classification of digital documents in PDF format. It describes genre classification as an important ingredient in contextualising scientific data and in retrieving targetted material for improving research. The current paper compares the role of visual layout, stylistic features and language model features in clustering documents and presents results in retrieving five selected genres (Scientific Article, Thesis, Periodicals, Business Report, and Form) from a pool of materials populated with documents of the nineteen most popular genres found in our experimental data set.
Flame filtering and perimeter localization of wildfires using aerial thermal imagery
Airborne thermal infrared (TIR) imaging systems are being increasingly used for wild fire tactical monitoring since they show important advantages over spaceborne platforms and visible sensors while becoming much more affordable and much lighter than multispectral cameras. However, the analysis of aerial TIR images entails a number of difficulties which have thus far prevented monitoring tasks from being totally automated. One of these issues that needs to be addressed is the appearance of flame projections during the geo-correction of off-nadir images. Filtering these flames is essential in order to accurately estimate the geographical location of the fuel burning interface. Therefore, we present a methodology which allows the automatic localisation of the active fire contour free of flame projections. The actively burning area is detected in TIR georeferenced images through a combination of intensity thresholding techniques, morphological processing and active contours. Subsequently, flame projections are filtered out by the temporal frequency analysis of the appropriate contour descriptors. The proposed algorithm was tested on footages acquired during three large-scale field experimental burns. Results suggest this methodology may be suitable to automatise the acquisition of quantitative data about the fire evolution. As future work, a revision of the low-pass filter implemented for the temporal analysis (currently a median filter) was recommended. The availability of up-to-date information about the fire state would improve situational awareness during an emergency response and may be used to calibrate data-driven simulators capable of emitting short-term accurate forecasts of the subsequent fire evolution.Postprint (author's final draft
