    The Comparative Study of Vibration Control of Flexible Structure Using Smart Materials

    Considerable attention has been devoted to active vibration control using intelligent materials as PZT actuators. This paper presents results on active control schemes for vibration suppression of flexible steel cantilever beam with bonded piezoelectric actuators. The PZT patches are surface bonded near the fixed end of flexible steel cantilever beam. The dynamic model of the flexible steel cantilever beam is derived. Active vibration control methods: optimal PID control, strain rate feedback control (SRF), and positive position feedback control (PPF) are investigated and implemented using xPC Target real-time system. Experimental results demonstrate that the SRF and PPF controls have better performance in suppressing the vibration of cantilever steel beam than the optimal PID control

    In-house experiments in large space structures at the Air Force Wright Aeronautical Laboratories Flight Dynamics Laboratory

    The Flight Dynamics Laboratory is committed to an in-house, experimental investigation of several technical areas critical to the dynamic performance of future Air Force large space structures. The advanced beam experiment was successfully completed and provided much experience in the implementation of active control approaches on real hardware. A series of experiments is under way in evaluating ground test methods on the 12 meter trusses with significant passive damping. Ground simulated zero-g response data from the undamped truss will be compared directly with true zero-g flight test data. The performance of several leading active control approaches will be measured and compared on one of the trusses in the presence of significant passive damping. In the future, the PACOSS dynamic test article will be set up as a test bed for the evaluation of system identification and control techniques on a complex, representative structure with high modal density and significant passive damping

    Strategies for increasing the operating frequency range of vibration energy harvesters: a review

    This paper reviews possible strategies to increase the operational frequency range of vibration-based micro-generators. Most vibration-based micro-generators are spring-mass-damper systems which generate maximum power when the resonant frequency of the generator matches the frequency of the ambient vibration. Any difference between these two frequencies can result in a significant decrease in generated power. This is a fundamental limitation of resonant vibration generators which restricts their capability in real applications. Possible solutions include the periodic tuning of the resonant frequency of the generator so that it matches the frequency of the ambient vibration at all times or widening the bandwidth of the generator. Periodic tuning can be achieved using mechanical or electrical methods. Bandwidth widening can be achieved using a generator array, a mechanical stopper, non-linear (e.g. magnetic) springs or bi-stable structures. Tuning methods can be classified into intermittent tuning (power is consumed periodically to tune the device) and continuous tuning (the tuning mechanism is continuously powered). This paper presents a comprehensive review of the principles and operating strategies for increasing the operating frequency range of vibration-based micro-generators presented in the literature to date. The advantages and disadvantages of each strategy are evaluated and conclusions are drawn regarding the relevant merits of each approach

    Design of wideband vibration-based electromagnetic generator by means of dual-resonator

    This paper describes the design of a wideband electromagnetic energy harvester that utilizes a novel dual-resonator method to improve the operational frequency range of the vibration-based generator. The device consists of two separate resonator systems (coil and magnet), which each comply with their respective resonance frequencies. This is because both resonators are designed in such a way that both magnet and coil components will oscillate at an additive phase angle, and hence create greater relative motion between the two dominating resonance frequencies, which realizes the wideband generator. Each resonator system consists of a distinctive cantilever beam, one attached with four magnets and steel keepers, the other attached with a copper coil and stainless steel holder as the free end mass. Both cantilevers are clamped and fitted to a common base that is subjected to a vibration source. Basic analytical models are derived and a numerical model is implemented in MATLAB-Simulink. Electromagnetic, structural modal and static mechanical analysis for the design of the prototype are completed using ANSYS finite element tools. For a 0.8 m s−2 acceleration, the open-loop voltage obtained from the experiment shows a good correlation with those from the simulation. Peak induced voltage is measured to be 259.5Vrms as compared to 240.9Vrms from the simulator at 21.3 Hz, which implies an error range of 7.7%. The results also indicate that there is a maximum of 58.22% improvement in the induced voltage within the intermediate region which occurs at the intersection point between the output response plots of two single resonator generators

    Active Vibration Control of a Smart Cantilever Beam on General Purpose Operating System

    All mechanical systems suffer from undesirable vibrations during their operations. Their occurrence is uncontrollable as it depends on various factors. However, for efficient operation of the system, these vibrations have to be controlled within the specified limits. Light weight, rapid and multi-mode control of the vibrating structure is possible by the use of piezoelectric sensors and actuators and feedback control algorithms. In this paper, direct output feedback based active vibration control has been implemented on a cantilever beam using Lead Zirconate-Titanate (PZT) sensors and actuators. Three PZT patches were used, one as the sensor, one as the exciter providing the forced vibrations and the third acting as the actuator that provides an equal but opposite phase vibration/force signal to that of sensed so as to damp out the vibrations.     Power flows and Mechanical Intensities in structural finite element analysis

    The identification of power flow paths in dynamically loaded structures is an important, but currently unavailable, capability for the finite element analyst. For this reason, methods for calculating power flows and mechanical intensities in finite element models are developed here. Formulations for calculating input and output powers, power flows, mechanical intensities, and power dissipations for beam, plate, and solid element types are derived. NASTRAN is used to calculate the required velocity, force, and stress results of an analysis, which a post-processor then uses to calculate power flow quantities. The SDRC I-deas Supertab module is used to view the final results. Test models include a simple truss and a beam-stiffened cantilever plate. Both test cases showed reasonable power flow fields over low to medium frequencies, with accurate power balances. Future work will include testing with more complex models, developing an interactive graphics program to view easily and efficiently the analysis results, applying shape optimization methods to the problem with power flow variables as design constraints, and adding the power flow capability to NASTRAN
