    Thrust control design for unmanned marine vehicles

Especially in unmanned marine vehicles which operate in dynamic flow conditions, these type thruster controllers provide unsatisfactory thrust responses. The reason for this is that the thrust force is simultaneously affected by dynamic effects like, variable ambient flow velocity and angle, thruster-thruster interaction and ventilation. It is aimed to achieve acceptable thrust tracking accuracy in all kind of dynamic flow conditions in this thesis work. A novel feed-back based thruster controller which includes the effect of incoming axial flow velocity, is designed for this purpose. In controller design, first, thruster propeller's open water characteristics in four-quadrant flow states are measured. Data collected from open water tests are then non-dimensionalized and embedded in the controller's thrust model code. Relation between ideal shaft speed and desired thrust is derived by using the four-quadrant propeller model. The proposed method is evaluated in the experimental test-setup designed for this study to simulate open water conditions. Results indicate that thrust tracking performance of novel controller is acceptable in all four-quadrant flow tests

    Task-space dynamic control of underwater robots

    This thesis is concerned with the control aspects for underwater tasks performed by marine robots. The mathematical models of an underwater vehicle and an underwater vehicle with an onboard manipulator are discussed together with their associated properties. The task-space regulation problem for an underwater vehicle is addressed where the desired target is commonly specified as a point. A new control technique is proposed where the multiple targets are defined as sub-regions. A fuzzy technique is used to handle these multiple sub-region criteria effectively. Due to the unknown gravitational and buoyancy forces, an adaptive term is adopted in the proposed controller. An extension to a region boundary-based control law is then proposed for an underwater vehicle to illustrate the flexibility of the region reaching concept. In this novel controller, a desired target is defined as a boundary instead of a point or region. For a mapping of the uncertain restoring forces, a least-squares estimation algorithm and the inverse Jacobian matrix are utilised in the adaptive control law. To realise a new tracking control concept for a kinematically redundant robot, subregion tracking control schemes with a sub-tasks objective are developed for a UVMS. In this concept, the desired objective is specified as a moving sub-region instead of a trajectory. In addition, due to the system being kinematically redundant, the controller also enables the use of self-motion of the system to perform sub-tasks (drag minimisation, obstacle avoidance, manipulability and avoidance of mechanical joint limits)

    Development of Robust Control Strategies for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles

    The resources of the energy and chemical balance in the ocean sustain mankind in many ways. Therefore, ocean exploration is an essential task that is accomplished by deploying Underwater Vehicles. An Underwater Vehicle with autonomy feature for its navigation and control is called Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). Among the task handled by an AUV, accurately positioning itself at a desired position with respect to the reference objects is called set-point control. Similarly, tracking of the reference trajectory is also another important task. Battery recharging of AUV, positioning with respect to underwater structure, cable, seabed, tracking of reference trajectory with desired accuracy and speed to avoid collision with the guiding vehicle in the last phase of docking are some significant applications where an AUV needs to perform the above tasks. Parametric uncertainties in AUV dynamics and actuator torque limitation necessitate to design robust control algorithms to achieve motion control objectives in the face of uncertainties. Sliding Mode Controller (SMC), H / μ synthesis, model based PID group controllers are some of the robust controllers which have been applied to AUV. But SMC suffers from less efficient tuning of its switching gains due to model parameters and noisy estimated acceleration states appearing in its control law. In addition, demand of high control effort due to high frequency chattering is another drawback of SMC. Furthermore, real-time implementation of H / μ synthesis controller based on its stability study is restricted due to use of linearly approximated dynamic model of an AUV, which hinders achieving robustness. Moreover, model based PID group controllers suffer from implementation complexities and exhibit poor transient and steady-state performances under parametric uncertainties. On the other hand model free Linear PID (LPID) has inherent problem of narrow convergence region, i.e.it can not ensure convergence of large initial error to zero. Additionally, it suffers from integrator-wind-up and subsequent saturation of actuator during the occurrence of large initial error. But LPID controller has inherent capability to cope up with the uncertainties. In view of addressing the above said problem, this work proposes wind-up free Nonlinear PID with Bounded Integral (BI) and Bounded Derivative (BD) for set-point control and combination of continuous SMC with Nonlinear PID with BI and BD namely SM-N-PID with BI and BD for trajectory tracking. Nonlinear functions are used for all P,I and D controllers (for both of set-point and tracking control) in addition to use of nonlinear tan hyperbolic function in SMC(for tracking only) such that torque demand from the controller can be kept within a limit. A direct Lyapunov analysis is pursued to prove stable motion of AUV. The efficacies of the proposed controllers are compared with other two controllers namely PD and N-PID without BI and BD for set-point control and PD plus Feedforward Compensation (FC) and SM-NPID without BI and BD for tracking control. Multiple AUVs cooperatively performing a mission offers several advantages over a single AUV in a non-cooperative manner; such as reliability and increased work efficiency, etc. Bandwidth limitation in acoustic medium possess challenges in designing cooperative motion control algorithm for multiple AUVs owing to the necessity of communication of sensors and actuator signals among AUVs. In literature, undirected graph based approach is used for control design under communication constraints and thus it is not suitable for large number of AUVs participating in a cooperative motion plan. Formation control is a popular cooperative motion control paradigm. This thesis models the formation as a minimally persistent directed graph and proposes control schemes for maintaining the distance constraints during the course of motion of entire formation. For formation control each AUV uses Sliding Mode Nonlinear PID controller with Bounded Integrator and Bounded Derivative. Direct Lyapunov stability analysis in the framework of input-to-state stability ensures the stable motion of formation while maintaining the desired distance constraints among the AUVs

    State relativity and speed-allocated line-of-sight course control for path-following of underwater vehicles

    Path-following is a primary task for most marine, air or space crafts, especially during autonomous operations. Research on autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) has received large interests in the last few decades with research incentives emerging from the safe, cost-effective and practical solutions provided by their applications such as search and rescue, inspection and monitoring of pipe-lines ans sub-sea structures. This thesis presents a novel guidance system based on the popular line-of-sight (LOS) guidance law for path-following (PF) of underwater vehicles (UVs) subject to environmental disturbances. Mathematical modeling and dynamics of (UVs) is presented first. This is followed by a comprehensive literature review on guidance-based path-following control of marine vehicles, which includes revised definitions of the track-errors and more detailed illustrations of the general PF problem. A number of advances on relative equations of motion are made, which include an improved understanding of the fluid FLOW frame and expression of its motion states, an analytic method of modeling the signs of forces and moments and the proofs of passivity and boundedness of relative UV systems in 3-D. The revision in the relative equations of motion include the concept of state relativity, which is an improved understanding of relativity of motion states expressed in reference frames and is also useful in incorporating environmental disturbances. In addition, the concept of drift rate is introduced along with a revision on the angles of motion in 3-D. A switching mechanism was developed to overcome a drawback of a LOS guidance law, and the linear and nonlinear stability results of the LOS guidance laws have been provided, where distinctions are made between straight and curved PF cases. The guidance system employs the unique formulation and solution of the speed allocation problem of allocating a desired speed vector into x and y components, and the course control that employs the slip angle for desired heading for disturbance rejection. The guidance system and particularly the general course control problem has been extended to 3-D with the new definition of vertical-slip angle. The overall guidance system employing the revised relative system model, course control and speed allocation has performed well during path-following under strong ocean current and/or wave disturbances and measurement noises in both 2-D and 3-D scenarios. In 2-D and 3-D 4 degrees-of-freedom models (DOF), the common sway-underactuated and fully actuated cases are considered, and in 3-D 5-DOF model, sway and heave underactuated and fully actuated cases are considered. Stability results of the LOS guidance laws include the semi-global exponential stability (SGES) of the switching LOS guidance and enclosure-based LOS guidance for straight and curved paths, and SGES of the loolahead-based LOS guidance laws for curved paths. Feedback sliding mode and PID controllers are applied during PF providing a comparison between them, and simulations are carried out in MatLab

    Control and guidance systems for the navigation of a biomimetic autonomous underwater vehicle

    The field of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) has increased dramatically in size and scope over the past three decades. Application areas for AUVs are numerous and varied, from deep sea exploration, to pipeline surveillance to mine clearing. The main concept behind this work was the design and the implementation of a control and guidance system for the navigation of a biomimetic AUV. In particular, the AUV analysed in this project tries to imitate the appearance and approximate the swimming method of an Atlantic Salmon and, for this reason, has been called RoboSalmo

    Performing heavy transfers for offshore wind maintenance

    As offshore wind farms become larger and further from the shore, there are strong economic and climate incentives to perform transfers required for operations and maintenance from floating vessels, rather than employing expensive and slow jack up rigs. However, successful transfers of heavy and sensitive equipment from a floating vessel (in all but benign sea/wind conditions) are heavily dependent on multiple degrees of freedom, high performance control. This project aims to bring a novel modelling and simulation methodology in Simulink that could be used to assess offshore wind installation and maintenance procedures. More specifically, the goal is to demonstrate that a crane prototype assumed to be located on a floating ship can transfer loads of hundreds of tons onto a fixed platform. Furthermore, this process should be completed with good precision and minimal impact force during equipment loading onto the stand. This problem has not yet been answered in research, with the only relevant patent in the field being the Ampelmann platform, a motionless bridge allowing technicians to access the offshore turbine. The first main contribution to knowledge of this thesis was the design of a 90 m crane that could handle a 660 tons load. This thesis presents a procedure, based on both mechanical/hydraulics design as well as empirical findings, which could be re-used for scaling the crane model to a more realistic dimension. It is worth noting that the goal here was to assess whether a realistically weighing piece of equipment could be stably handled, while the actual size of the crane was deemed unimportant. Another missing gap in literature this project wanted to fill was achieving active motion compensation for a larger scale system such as the current one. This refers to balancing out the base motions on multiple axes, so the payload can be moved on a given trajectory unaffected by them. Currently, research in the field mainly consists of crane mechanisms that feature active heave compensation, which only refers to the vertical axis. Hence, two control design methods were employed to assess the viability of heavy payload positioning from floating vessels through the development of a simulation approach using Simulink. The crane prototype was designed and modelled to operate under simulated vessel motions given by sea states with a significant wave height of 5 m and maximum wave frequency of 1 rad/s. Then, traditional control (feedback and feedforward) was designed to achieve active motion compensation with steady-state position errors under 20 cm. A second controller architecture was then designed/implemented as a comparison basis for the first one, with the aim being to find the most robust solution of the two. The nonlinear generalised minimum variance (NGMV) control algorithm was chosen for control design in this application. Due to its ability to compensate for significant system nonlinearities and the ease of implementation, NGMV was a good candidate for the task at hand. Tuning controller parameters to stabilize the system could also be based on the previously determined traditional control solutions. An investigation of controllers’ robustness against model mismatch was carried out by introducing various levels of uncertainty which influence actuators’ natural frequency to assess system sensitivity. The outcome of the investigation determined that traditional and NGMV controllers provided comparable regulating performance in terms of reference tracking and disturbance rejection, for the nominal case. This confirmed the assertion that the PID-based NGMV weightings selection is a useful starting point for controller tuning. Increasing the mismatch between the nominal system based on which the controllers’ were designed and the actual plant showed that the traditional control was marginally more robust in this application. The final contribution to knowledge this thesis aimed to bring was minimising the impact force during load placement on a fixed and rigid platform. To that end, the contact forces between the payload and a platform were first successfully modelled and measured. A switching algorithm between position and force control was then developed based on a methodology found in literature but on a microscopic scale project. To execute smooth load placement, an automated hybrid force/position control scheme was implemented. The proposed algorithm enabled position control on x and y axes, while minimising impact forces on the z-axis. Unfortunately, preliminary findings showed that there is still work to be done to claim any success in this regard.     Modelling and control of lightweight underwater vehicle-manipulator systems

    This thesis studies the mathematical description and the low-level control structures for underwater robotic systems performing motion and interaction tasks. The main focus is on the study of lightweight underwater-vehicle manipulator systems. A description of the dynamic and hydrodynamic modelling of the underwater vehicle-manipulator system (UVMS) is presented and a study of the coupling effects between the vehicle and manipulator is given. Through simulation results it is shown that the vehicle’s capabilities are degraded by the motion of the manipulator, when it has a considerable mass with respect to the vehicle. Understanding the interaction effects between the two subsystems is beneficial in developing new control architectures that can improve the performance of the system. A control strategy is proposed for reducing the coupling effects between the two subsystems when motion tasks are required. The method is developed based on the mathematical model of the UVMS and the estimated interaction effects. Simulation results show the validity of the proposed control structure even in the presence of uncertainties in the dynamic model. The problem of autonomous interaction with the underwater environment is further addressed. The thesis proposes a parallel position/force control structure for lightweight underwater vehicle-manipulator systems. Two different strategies for integrating this control law on the vehicle-manipulator structure are proposed. The first strategy uses the parallel control law for the manipulator while a different control law, the Proportional Integral Limited control structure, is used for the vehicle. The second strategy treats the underwater vehicle-manipulator system as a single system and the parallel position/force law is used for the overall system. The low level parallel position/force control law is validated through practical experiments using the HDT-MK3-M electric manipulator. The Proportional Integral Limited control structure is tested using a 5 degrees-of-freedom underwater vehicle in a wave-tank facility. Furthermore, an adaptive tuning method based on interaction theory is proposed for adjusting the gains of the controller. The experimental results show that the method is advantageous as it decreases the complexity of the manual tuning otherwise required and reduces the energy consumption. The main objectives of this thesis are to understand and accurately represent the behaviour of an underwater vehiclemanipulator system, to evaluate this system when in contact with the environment and to design informed low-level control structures based on the observations made through the mathematical study of the system. The concepts presented in this thesis are not restricted to only vehicle-manipulator systems but can be applied to different other multibody robotic systems
