Existence Theorems for Scheduling to Meet Two Objectives
We will look at the existence of schedules which are simultaneously near-optimal for two criteria. First,we will present some techniques for proving existence theorems,in a very general setting, for bicriterion scheduling problems. We will then use these techniques to prove existence theorems for a large class of problems. We will consider the relationship between objective functions based on completion time, flow time, lateness and the number of on-time jobs. We will also present negative results first for the problem of simultaneously minimizing the maximum flow time and average weighted flow time and second for minimizing the maximum flow time and simultaneously maximizing the number of on-time jobs. In some cases we will also present lower bounds and algorithms that approach our bicriterion existence theorems. Finally we will improve upon our general existence results in one more specific environment
Analysis of Cell Load Coupling for LTE Network Planning and Optimization
System-centric modeling and analysis are of key significance in planning and
optimizing cellular networks. In this paper, we provide a mathematical analysis
of performance modeling for LTE networks. The system model characterizes the
coupling relation between the cell load factors, taking into account
non-uniform traffic demand and interference between the cells with arbitrary
network topology. Solving the model enables a network-wide performance
evaluation in resource consumption. We develop and prove both sufficient and
necessary conditions for the feasibility of the load-coupling system, and
provide results related to computational aspects for numerically approaching
the solution. The theoretical findings are accompanied with experimental
results to instructively illustrate the application in optimizing LTE network
configuration.Comment: The paper contains 22 pages with 9 figures. The paper is submitted to

An Approximate Inner Bound to the QoS Aware Throughput Region of a Tree Network under IEEE 802.15.4 CSMA/CA and Application to Wireless Sensor Network Design
We consider a tree network spanning a set of source nodes that generate
measurement packets, a set of additional relay nodes that only forward packets
from the sources, and a data sink. We assume that the paths from the sources to
the sink have bounded hop count. We assume that the nodes use the IEEE 802.15.4
CSMA/CA for medium access control, and that there are no hidden terminals. In
this setting, starting with a set of simple fixed point equations, we derive
sufficient conditions for the tree network to approximately satisfy certain
given QoS targets such as end-to-end delivery probability and delay under a
given rate of generation of measurement packets at the sources (arrival rates
vector). The structures of our sufficient conditions provide insight on the
dependence of the network performance on the arrival rate vector, and the
topological properties of the network. Furthermore, for the special case of
equal arrival rates, default backoff parameters, and for a range of values of
target QoS, we show that among all path-length-bounded trees (spanning a given
set of sources and BS) that meet the sufficient conditions, a shortest path
tree achieves the maximum throughput
Uncertainty in Soft Temporal Constraint Problems:A General Framework and Controllability Algorithms forThe Fuzzy Case
In real-life temporal scenarios, uncertainty and preferences are often
essential and coexisting aspects. We present a formalism where quantitative
temporal constraints with both preferences and uncertainty can be defined. We
show how three classical notions of controllability (that is, strong, weak, and
dynamic), which have been developed for uncertain temporal problems, can be
generalized to handle preferences as well. After defining this general
framework, we focus on problems where preferences follow the fuzzy approach,
and with properties that assure tractability. For such problems, we propose
algorithms to check the presence of the controllability properties. In
particular, we show that in such a setting dealing simultaneously with
preferences and uncertainty does not increase the complexity of controllability
testing. We also develop a dynamic execution algorithm, of polynomial
complexity, that produces temporal plans under uncertainty that are optimal
with respect to fuzzy preferences
Truthful Online Scheduling with Commitments
We study online mechanisms for preemptive scheduling with deadlines, with the
goal of maximizing the total value of completed jobs. This problem is
fundamental to deadline-aware cloud scheduling, but there are strong lower
bounds even for the algorithmic problem without incentive constraints. However,
these lower bounds can be circumvented under the natural assumption of deadline
slackness, i.e., that there is a guaranteed lower bound on the ratio
between a job's size and the time window in which it can be executed.
In this paper, we construct a truthful scheduling mechanism with a constant
competitive ratio, given slackness . Furthermore, we show that if is
large enough then we can construct a mechanism that also satisfies a commitment
property: it can be determined whether or not a job will finish, and the
requisite payment if so, well in advance of each job's deadline. This is
notable because, in practice, users with strict deadlines may find it
unacceptable to discover only very close to their deadline that their job has
been rejected
An investigation of resource-allocation decisions by means of project networks.
This paper investigates the relationship between resource allocation and ES-policies, which are a type of scheduling policies introduced for stochastic scheduling and which can be represented by a directed acyclic graph. We present a formal treatment of resource flows as are presentation of resource-allocation decisions, extending the existing literature. A number of complexity results are established, showing that a number of recently proposed objective functions for evaluating the quality of ES-policies lead to difficult problems. Finally, some reflections are provided on possible effciency enhancements to enumeration algorithms for ES-policies.Complexity; Project scheduling; Resource allocation; Resource constraints;
