    A Phase Approach for Adopting Private Clouds as a Collaborative Platform for Nigerian Universities

    Cloud computing is creating a new era for information technology by providing a set of services that appears to have infinite capacity, immediate deployment and high availability at trivial cost. It is the result of the evolution of computing and communications technology from a high-value asset to a simple commodity. In this evolution, the focus shifts from the concept of computing as a physical thing to computing as a service, like electricity, that is accessible from the nearest network connection. An organization, which is under increasing pressure to provide computing services at the lowest possible cost, can choose either public or private clouds to meet these needs. However, driven by concerns over security, regulatory compliance, control over quality of service, and long-term costs, many organizations choose internal private clouds. Private clouds provide the same cost and flexibility benefits as public clouds and also enable an organization to control the quality of service delivered to their users. In addition, private clouds allow an organization to better secure data and meet governance regulations which is usually a major concern when using public clouds. Many universities spend huge amount of money yearly on ICT infrastructure.  About ninety percent of ICTs budgets are consumed by computing requirements that can be centralized and standardized enabling one to do more with less resource. This paper tries to make a ca se for the private cloud as a better platform for collaboration among the Nigerian universities and to propose a safe strategy for migration into the private cloud.     Optimized Contract-based Model for Resource Allocation in Federated Geo-distributed Clouds

    In the era of Big Data, with data growing massively in scale and velocity, cloud computing and its pay-as-you-go modelcontinues to provide significant cost benefits and a seamless service delivery model for cloud consumers. The evolution of small-scaleand large-scale geo-distributed datacenters operated and managed by individual Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) raises newchallenges in terms of effective global resource sharing and management of autonomously-controlled individual datacenter resourcestowards a globally efficient resource allocation model. Earlier solutions for geo-distributed clouds have focused primarily on achievingglobal efficiency in resource sharing, that although tries to maximize the global resource allocation, results in significant inefficiencies inlocal resource allocation for individual datacenters and individual cloud provi ders leading to unfairness in their revenue and profitearned. In this paper, we propose a new contracts-based resource sharing model for federated geo-distributed clouds that allows CSPsto establish resource sharing contracts with individual datacentersapriorifor defined time intervals during a 24 hour time period. Based on the established contracts, individual CSPs employ a contracts cost and duration aware job scheduling and provisioning algorithm that enables jobs to complete and meet their response time requirements while achieving both global resource allocation efficiency and local fairness in the profit earned. The proposed techniques are evaluated through extensive experiments using realistic workloads generated using the SHARCNET cluster trace. The experiments demonstrate the effectiveness, scalability and resource sharing fairness of the proposed model

The model is evaluatedusing two case scenarios, one is an enterprise client with30,000 worldwide customers followed by a small scale subjectmatter expertise through small to medium enterprise (SME)organisations.     It's written in the cloud: The hype and promise of cloud computing

    Purpose of paper: This viewpoint discusses the emerging IT platform of Cloud Computing and discusses where and how this has developed in terms of the collision between internet and enterprise computing paradigms – and hence why cloud computing will be driven not by computing architectures but more fundamental ICT consumption behaviours. Design/methodology/approach: The approach has been based upon the discussion and recent developments of Software as a Service (SaaS) and associated ICT computing metaphors and is largely based upon the contemporary discussion at the moment of the impact of social, open source and configurable technology services. Findings: It is suggested that whilst cloud computing and SaaS are indeed innovations within ICT, the real innovation will come when such platforms allow new industries, sectors, ways of doing business, connecting with and engaging with people to emerge. Thus looking beyond the technology itself. Research limitations/applications: Author viewpoint only, not research based. Practical applications: Brings together some of the recent discussions within the popular as well as business and computing press on social networking, open source and utility computing. Social implications: Suggests that cloud computing can potentially transform and change the way in which IS and IT are accessed, consumed, configured and used in daily life.     Designing Traceability into Big Data Systems

    Providing an appropriate level of accessibility and traceability to data or process elements (so-called Items) in large volumes of data, often Cloud-resident, is an essential requirement in the Big Data era. Enterprise-wide data systems need to be designed from the outset to support usage of such Items across the spectrum of business use rather than from any specific application view. The design philosophy advocated in this paper is to drive the design process using a so-called description-driven approach which enriches models with meta-data and description and focuses the design process on Item re-use, thereby promoting traceability. Details are given of the description-driven design of big data systems at CERN, in health informatics and in business process management.     Cloud computing resource scheduling and a survey of its evolutionary approaches

    A disruptive technology fundamentally transforming the way that computing services are delivered, cloud computing offers information and communication technology users a new dimension of convenience of resources, as services via the Internet. Because cloud provides a finite pool of virtualized on-demand resources, optimally scheduling them has become an essential and rewarding topic, where a trend of using Evolutionary Computation (EC) algorithms is emerging rapidly. Through analyzing the cloud computing architecture, this survey first presents taxonomy at two levels of scheduling cloud resources. It then paints a landscape of the scheduling problem and solutions. According to the taxonomy, a comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art approaches is presented systematically. Looking forward, challenges and potential future research directions are investigated and invited, including real-time scheduling, adaptive dynamic scheduling, large-scale scheduling, multiobjective scheduling, and distributed and parallel scheduling. At the dawn of Industry 4.0, cloud computing scheduling for cyber-physical integration with the presence of big data is also discussed. Research in this area is only in its infancy, but with the rapid fusion of information and data technology, more exciting and agenda-setting topics are likely to emerge on the horizon

    The services sector strategic development unites a multitude of economic and managerial aspects and is one of the most important problems of economic management. Many researches devoted to this industry study are available. Most of them are performed in the traditional aspect of the voluminous calendar approach to strategic management, characteristic of the national scientific school. Such an approach seems archaic, forming false strategic benchmarks. The services sector is of special scientific interest in this context due to the fact that the social production structure to the services development model attraction in many countries suggests transition to postindustrial economy type where the services sector is a system-supporting sector of the economy. Actively influencing the economy, the services sector in the developed countries dominates in the GDP formation, primary capital accumulation, labor, households final consumption and, finally, citizens comfort of living. However, a clear understanding of the services sector as a hyper-sector permeating all spheres of human activity has not yet been fully developed, although interest in this issue continues to grow among many authors.
