    TetSplat: Real-time Rendering and Volume Clipping of Large Unstructured Tetrahedral Meshes

    We present a novel approach to interactive visualization and exploration of large unstructured tetrahedral meshes. These massive 3D meshes are used in mission-critical CFD and structural mechanics simulations, and typically sample multiple field values on several millions of unstructured grid points. Our method relies on the pre-processing of the tetrahedral mesh to partition it into non-convex boundaries and internal fragments that are subsequently encoded into compressed multi-resolution data representations. These compact hierarchical data structures are then adaptively rendered and probed in real-time on a commodity PC. Our point-based rendering algorithm, which is inspired by QSplat, employs a simple but highly efficient splatting technique that guarantees interactive frame-rates regardless of the size of the input mesh and the available rendering hardware. It furthermore allows for real-time probing of the volumetric data-set through constructive solid geometry operations as well as interactive editing of color transfer functions for an arbitrary number of field values. Thus, the presented visualization technique allows end-users for the first time to interactively render and explore very large unstructured tetrahedral meshes on relatively inexpensive hardware

    Planet-Sized Batched Dynamic Adaptive Meshes (P-BDAM)

    This paper describes an efficient technique for out-of-core management and interactive rendering of planet sized textured terrain surfaces. The technique, called planet-sized batched dynamic adaptive meshes (P-BDAM), extends the BDAM approach by using as basic primitive a general triangulation of points on a displaced triangle. The proposed framework introduces several advances with respect to the state of the art: thanks to a batched host-to-graphics communication model, we outperform current adaptive tessellation solutions in terms of rendering speed; we guarantee overall geometric continuity, exploiting programmable graphics hardware to cope with the accuracy issues introduced by single precision floating points; we exploit a compressed out of core representation and speculative prefetching for hiding disk latency during rendering of out-of-core data; we efficiently construct high quality simplified representations with a novel distributed out of core simplification algorithm working on a standard PC network.147-15

    PHYSICS-BASED SHAPE MORPHING AND PACKING FOR LAYOUT DESIGN

    The packing problem, also named layout design, has found wide applications in the mechanical engineering field. In most cases, the shapes of the objects do not change during the packing process. However, in some applications such as vehicle layout design, shape morphing may be required for some specific components (such as water and fuel reservoirs). The challenge is to fit a component of sufficient size in the available space in a crowded environment (such as the vehicle under-hood) while optimizing the overall performance objectives of the vehicle and improving design efficiency. This work is focused on incorporating component shape design into the layout design process, i.e. finding the optimal locations and orientations of all the components within a specified volume, as well as the suitable shapes of selected ones. The first major research issue is to identify how to efficiently and accurately morph the shapes of components respecting the functional constraints. Morphing methods depend on the geometrical representation of the components. The traditional parametric representation may lend itself easily to modification, but it relies on assumption that the final approximate shape of the object is known, and therefore, the morphing freedom is very limited. To morph objects whose shape can be changed arbitrarily in layout design, a mesh based morphing method based on a mass-spring physical model is developed. For this method, there is no need to explicitly specify the deformations and the shape morphing freedom is not confined. The second research issue is how to incorporate component shape design into a layout design process. Handling the complete problem at once may be beyond our reach,therefore decomposition and multilevel approaches are used. At the system level, a genetic algorithm (GA) is applied to find the positions and orientations of the objects, while at the sub-system or component level, morphing is accomplished for select components. Although different packing applications may have different objectives and constraints, they all share some common issues. These include CAD model preprocessing for packing purpose, data format translation during the packing process if performance evaluation and morphing use different representation methods, efficiency of collision detection methods, etc. These common issues are all brought together under the framework of a general methodology for layout design with shape morphing. Finally, practical examples of vehicle under-hood/underbody layout design with the mass-spring physical model based shape morphing are demonstrated to illustrate the proposed approach before concluding and proposing continuing work

    Automated Pattern Detection and Generalization of Building Groups

    This dissertation focuses on the topic of building group generalization by considering the detection of building patterns. Generalization is an important research field in cartography, which is part of map production and the basis for the derivation of multiple representation. As one of the most important features on map, buildings occupy large amount of map space and normally have complex shape and spatial distribution, which leads to that the generalization of buildings has long been an important and challenging task. For social, architectural and geographical reasons, the buildings were built with some special rules which forms different building patterns. Building patterns are crucial structures which should be carefully considered during graphical representation and generalization. Although people can effortlessly perceive these patterns, however, building patterns are not explicitly described in building datasets. Therefore, to better support the subsequent generalization process, it is important to automatically recognize building patterns. The objective of this dissertation is to develop effective methods to detect building patterns from building groups. Based on the identified patterns, some generalization methods are proposed to fulfill the task of building generalization. The main contribution of the dissertation is described as the following five aspects: (1) The terminology and concept of building pattern has been clearly explained; a detailed and relative complete typology of building patterns has been proposed by summarizing the previous researches as well as extending by the author; (2) A stroke-mesh based method has been developed to group buildings and detect different patterns from the building groups; (3) Through the analogy between line simplification and linear building group typification, a stroke simplification based typification method has been developed aiming at solving the generalization of building groups with linear patterns; (4) A mesh-based typification method has been developed for the generalization of the building groups with grid patterns; (5) A method of extracting hierarchical skeleton structures from discrete buildings have been proposed. The extracted hierarchical skeleton structures are regarded as the representations of the global shape of the entire region, which is used to control the generalization process. With the above methods, the building patterns are detected from the building groups and the generalization of building groups are executed based on the patterns.     On structural shape optimization using an embedding domain discretization technique

    This contribution presents a novel approach to structural shape optimization that relies on an embedding domain discretization technique. The evolving shape design is embedded within a uniform finite element background mesh which is then used for the solution of the physical state problem throughout the course of the optimization. We consider a boundary tracking procedure based on adaptive mesh refinement to separate between interior elements, exterior elements, and elements intersected by the physical domain boundary. A selective domain integration procedure is employed to account for the geometric mismatch between the uniform embedding domain discretization and the evolving structural component. Thereby, we avoid the need to provide a finite element mesh that conforms to the structural component for every design iteration, as it is the case for a standard Lagrangian approach to structural shape optimization. Still, we adopt an explicit shape parametrization that allows for a direct manipulation of boundary vertices for the design evolution process. In order to avoid irregular and impracticable design updates, we consider a geometric regularization technique to render feasible descent directions for the course of the optimization

    4.45 Pflops Astrophysical N-Body Simulation on K computer -- The Gravitational Trillion-Body Problem

    As an entry for the 2012 Gordon-Bell performance prize, we report performance results of astrophysical N-body simulations of one trillion particles performed on the full system of K computer. This is the first gravitational trillion-body simulation in the world. We describe the scientific motivation, the numerical algorithm, the parallelization strategy, and the performance analysis. Unlike many previous Gordon-Bell prize winners that used the tree algorithm for astrophysical N-body simulations, we used the hybrid TreePM method, for similar level of accuracy in which the short-range force is calculated by the tree algorithm, and the long-range force is solved by the particle-mesh algorithm. We developed a highly-tuned gravity kernel for short-range forces, and a novel communication algorithm for long-range forces. The average performance on 24576 and 82944 nodes of K computer are 1.53 and 4.45 Pflops, which correspond to 49% and 42% of the peak speed.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, Proceedings of Supercomputing 2012 (http://sc12.supercomputing.org/), Gordon Bell Prize Winner.
