    Eye quietness and quiet eye in expert and novice golf performance: an electrooculographic analysis

    Quiet eye (QE) is the final ocular fixation on the target of an action (e.g., the ball in golf putting). Camerabased eye-tracking studies have consistently found longer QE durations in experts than novices; however, mechanisms underlying QE are not known. To offer a new perspective we examined the feasibility of measuring the QE using electrooculography (EOG) and developed an index to assess ocular activity across time: eye quietness (EQ). Ten expert and ten novice golfers putted 60 balls to a 2.4 m distant hole. Horizontal EOG (2ms resolution) was recorded from two electrodes placed on the outer sides of the eyes. QE duration was measured using a EOG voltage threshold and comprised the sum of the pre-movement and post-movement initiation components. EQ was computed as the standard deviation of the EOG in 0.5 s bins from –4 to +2 s, relative to backswing initiation: lower values indicate less movement of the eyes, hence greater quietness. Finally, we measured club-ball address and swing durations. T-tests showed that total QE did not differ between groups (p = .31); however, experts had marginally shorter pre-movement QE (p = .08) and longer post-movement QE (p < .001) than novices. A group × time ANOVA revealed that experts had less EQ before backswing initiation and greater EQ after backswing initiation (p = .002). QE durations were inversely correlated with EQ from –1.5 to 1 s (rs = –.48 - –.90, ps = .03 - .001). Experts had longer swing durations than novices (p = .01) and, importantly, swing durations correlated positively with post-movement QE (r = .52, p = .02) and negatively with EQ from 0.5 to 1s (r = –.63, p = .003). This study demonstrates the feasibility of measuring ocular activity using EOG and validates EQ as an index of ocular activity. Its findings challenge the dominant perspective on QE and provide new evidence that expert-novice differences in ocular activity may reflect differences in the kinematics of how experts and novices execute skills

    Developing the scales on evaluation beliefs of student teachers

    The purpose of the study reported in this paper was to investigate the validity and the reliability of a newly developed questionnaire named ‘Teacher Evaluation Beliefs’ (TEB). The framework for developing items was provided by the two models. The first model focuses on Student-Centered and Teacher-Centered beliefs about evaluation while the other centers on five dimensions (what/ who/ when/ why/ how). The validity and reliability of the new instrument was investigated using both exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis study (n=446). Overall results indicate that the two-factor structure is more reasonable than the five-factor one. Further research needs additional items about the latent dimensions “what” ”who” ”when” ”why” “how” for each existing factor based on Student-centered and Teacher-centered approaches

    Computer attitude, and the impact of personal characteristics and information and communication technology adoption patterns on performance of teaching faculty in higher education in Ghana, West Africa

    This study examined computer attitude, and the impact of personal characteristics and ICT adoption patterns on performance of multidisciplinary teaching faculty in three public universities in Ghana. A cross-sectional research of mixed methods was applied in collecting data and information. Quantitative data from 164 respondents were analyzed using descriptive, multivariate analysis of MANOVA and simultaneous multiple linear regression statistics. Findings show high and positive computer attitude with affective dominating usefulness, behavior and control factors. Evidence of differential ICT adoption thresholds represented by computer purchase, general use, teaching, and research is observed. Overall ICT-based performance of the teaching faculty is modest. Significant variability in mean differences is reported across ICT performance factor levels on age and academic discipline, but not on gender and professional status. Independently, laggards predicted overall high statistically significant impact on ICT performance at 52% (p \u3c .01). All other significant predictors fall within regression coefficients of 17 and 38% (p \u3c.01 and .05 levels). Reasons, incentives and barriers to ICT integration were examined and reported together with special computer proficiency levels. Inclusive development is a palpable opportunity and the best practices are those supported holistically for their impact. Strategies for practice and further studies into adoption and performance behaviors that could ultimately influence investment, personal, professional, and overall growth of ICT in higher education are recommended

    Student learning experiences in higher education in Hong Kong: An investigation of students’ experiences of academic engagement in relation to the affective dimension of learning

    Academic engagement is positioned as an important determinant of student success in higher education for it is positively linked with academic performance and other positive qualities such as Psychological Capital (PsyCap) and students’ wellbeing. The positive link between academic engagement and PsyCap, as a positive psychological capacity, also indicates the importance role of the affective dimension of learning in influencing students’ academic engagement, however this dimension is under-represented in the current literature. Adopting a mixed methods approach, this study aims to examine the process of academic engagement in relation to the role of the affective dimension of learning, particularly in terms of students’ experiences and perception of their engagement in study. The present study was conducted in a private university in Hong Kong, where 270 students participated in a self-reported survey and 20 of them in the subsequent semi-structured interviews. Findings from the survey indicated a positive and reciprocal relationship between academic engagement and PsyCap that the two constructs have mutually influenced each other. The interview findings revealed the influence of various affective elements in promoting students’ academic engagement, which were characterised by affective-cognitive processes as students reported their experiences in detail. All these findings substantiate the influence of the affective dimension of learning on students’ academic engagement and expand the current understanding of academic engagement in higher education students, adding to the body of knowledge in the extant literature. It is hope that findings from the present study would illuminate possible avenues for educators to develop appropriate practices to promote academic engagement and the subsequent academic performance in university students

    Adobe Youth Voices Literature Review

    Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC) received a grant from Adobe to conduct an evaluation of the Adobe Youth Voices (AYV) program. As part of the evaluation, EDC conducted a review of relevant literature to situate AYV in a broader context, provide stakeholders with a framework for understanding goals and outcomes, and frame and inform the evaluation questions. EDC reviewed scholarly articles, program reports and evaluations, and research studies that addressed youth media programs, youth development, teacher professional development, and other areas related to AYV's goals.Among the findings, the literature review includes 6 key points that speak to the AYV program:1. The goals of youth media programs most commonly cited can be grouped into several categories: Youth voice -- the capacity for self-expression Youth development -- the process of developing the skills and personal attributes that enable young people to become successful adults Media literacy -- the ability to analyze, evaluate and produce information in a variety of media forms Skill development -- such as communication, critical thinking, technology, and media production skills Social action or civic engagement 2. Outcomes and impacts on participants of youth media programs commonly found in the literature include: Improved skills Improved community perception of youth Positive youth development Increased social action and civic engagement 3. Outcomes and impacts on participants of youth development programs frequently cited include:Improved communication, critical thinking, and related skills Increased self-esteem More positive attitudes towards school and their futures 4. There is broad agreement that traditional educational approaches do not adequately address 21st century skills. Education must adapt to be more compatible with the ways in which young people think and learn, as well as the tools and media that are part of their environment.5. Student engagement in education has been associated with positive youth development and 21st century skills. Engaging instruction often includes inquiry- or project-based, multidisciplinary, and authentic learning activities.6. Educator professional development is believed to be a key step toward improving student outcomes. While there is little research that can demonstrate this connection, there is new focus on evaluating the effectiveness of professional development activities. Elements of effective professional development include learning communities and collaboration, ongoing support and assistance, and active or applied learning

    Socially and Emotionally Competent Leadership: Practices That Shape the Sources of Collective Efficacy

    Thesis advisor: Raquel MuñizResearch has shown that collective efficacy, school-based leadership, and social and emotional (SEL) competencies positively contribute to student success. In the context of education, collective efficacy refers to whether teachers believe in the ability and capacity of their colleagues to support the achievement of all students. Limited research has examined the bridge between leadership practices and the primary sources of collective efficacy: mastery experiences, vicarious experiences, verbal/social persuasion, and affective states. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to identify leadership practices and determine how they shaped the sources of collective efficacy. Findings indicated that leadership practices – meeting time, professional development, positive praise, coaching, feedback, and sharing expertise – modeled the SEL competencies of social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Implications of these findings further establish the sources of collective efficacy as influential factors that shape adult interactions, actions, reflections, and ultimately, student achievement.Thesis (EdD) — Boston College, 2020.Submitted to: Boston College.
