    From Manual Driving to Automated Driving: A Review of 10 Years of AutoUI

    This paper gives an overview of the ten-year devel- opment of the papers presented at the International ACM Conference on Automotive User Interfaces and Interactive Vehicular Applications (AutoUI) from 2009 to 2018. We categorize the topics into two main groups, namely, manual driving-related research and automated driving-related re- search. Within manual driving, we mainly focus on studies on user interfaces (UIs), driver states, augmented reality and head-up displays, and methodology; Within automated driv- ing, we discuss topics, such as takeover, acceptance and trust, interacting with road users, UIs, and methodology.     Effects of modality, urgency and situation on responses to multimodal warnings for drivers

    Signifying road-related events with warnings can be highly beneficial, especially when imminent attention is needed. This thesis describes how modality, urgency and situation can influence driver responses to multimodal displays used as warnings. These displays utilise all combinations of audio, visual and tactile modalities, reflecting different urgency levels. In this way, a new rich set of cues is designed, conveying information multimodally, to enhance reactions during driving, which is a highly visual task. The importance of the signified events to driving is reflected in the warnings, and safety-critical or non-critical situations are communicated through the cues. Novel warning designs are considered, using both abstract displays, with no semantic association to the signified event, and language-based ones, using speech. These two cue designs are compared, to discover their strengths and weaknesses as car alerts. The situations in which the new cues are delivered are varied, by simulating both critical and non-critical events and both manual and autonomous car scenarios. A novel set of guidelines for using multimodal driver displays is finally provided, considering the modalities utilised, the urgency signified, and the situation simulated

    A High-Fidelity VR Simulation Study: Do External Warnings Really Improve Pedestrian Safe Crossing Behavior?

    To better communicate with pedestrians, adding external displays to autonomous vehicles (AVs) has been proposed as a potential communication method to encourage safe crossing behavior by pedestrians. Whereas, most researchers have conducted intercept interviews, lab studies, or simulation studies to explore the efficacy of these displays, these approaches only studied crossing intention but did not explore crossing behavior. We developed a high-fidelity virtual reality scenario where participants could demonstrate actual crossing behavior within an adequately replicated real-world street. We simulated a local street with scalability of the real world in a VR environment, conducted an experiment in an empty space large enough for participants to move across the road in the VR environment. A mixed-method approach assessed attitudinal and behavioral interactions with potential warning patterns. The results showed that the warning patterns contributed significantly to pedestrians’ perceptual vigilance, as in past studies, but safer crossing behavior was not observed. This suggests that crossing intention measures may not be an adequate substitute for behavioral measures of crossing

    Change blindness: eradication of gestalt strategies

    Arrays of eight, texture-defined rectangles were used as stimuli in a one-shot change blindness (CB) task where there was a 50% chance that one rectangle would change orientation between two successive presentations separated by an interval. CB was eliminated by cueing the target rectangle in the first stimulus, reduced by cueing in the interval and unaffected by cueing in the second presentation. This supports the idea that a representation was formed that persisted through the interval before being 'overwritten' by the second presentation (Landman et al, 2003 Vision Research 43149–164]. Another possibility is that participants used some kind of grouping or Gestalt strategy. To test this we changed the spatial position of the rectangles in the second presentation by shifting them along imaginary spokes (by ±1 degree) emanating from the central fixation point. There was no significant difference seen in performance between this and the standard task [F(1,4)=2.565, p=0.185]. This may suggest two things: (i) Gestalt grouping is not used as a strategy in these tasks, and (ii) it gives further weight to the argument that objects may be stored and retrieved from a pre-attentional store during this task
