EU rural policy: proposal and application of an agricultural sustainability index
In this paper I propose an Agricultural Sustainability Index (ASI) starting from a âpoliticalâ perspective: European legislation in the rural sector. I try to answer these questions. How can we measure sustainability in agriculture? How do we measure the enhancement (if any) of the European policy for sustainability in agriculture? Why do some geographical areas perform better than others? Considering these questions, the paper suggests a model for measuring sustainability in agriculture and an approach to compare performances among different geographical contexts. The model puts together different dimensions of sustainability in agriculture, combining Geographical Information System (GIS) analysis and Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA). Using eighteen agricultural indicators divided into three dimensions, social, economic and environmental, the model incorporates the following stages: (i) indicator specification and definition of the decisional framework; (ii) indicators' normalisation by means of transformation functions based on the fuzzy logic approach; (iii) indicators weighted by Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) techniques; (iv) indicators aggregated to obtain the ASI. The model is tested on a specific area: Alta Val dâAgri, a rural area in the southern Basilicata Region. Gender Auditing in a Capability Approach
Feminist studies have developed several tools to assess the gender impact of public policy and, in particular, of public budgets. We introduce an innovative approach to gender auditing of public budgets inspired by the capability approach. On the one hand we expand the scope of assessing the gender policy impact taking into account womenâs multidimensional wellbeing, on the other hand, we use a womenâs perspective to conceptualize the capability approach and make it operational in the space of public policies. This book collects fifteen papers published in s Special Issue of Mathematics titled âFuzzy Sets in Business Management, Finance, and Economicsâ, which was published in 2021. These paper cover a wide range of different tools from Fuzzy Set Theory and applications in many areas of Business Management and other connected fields. Specifically, this book contains applications of such instruments as, among others, Fuzzy Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis, Neuro-Fuzzy Methods, the Forgotten Effects Algorithm, Expertons Theory, Fuzzy Markov Chains, Fuzzy Arithmetic, Decision Making with OWA Operators and Pythagorean Aggregation Operators, Fuzzy Pattern Recognition, and Intuitionistic Fuzzy Sets. Quantity versus Quality in Project Based Learning Practices
In the midst of the turbulence wrought by the global economy, it has become common to see projects as an essential medium for achieving change. However, project based learning practices - as a subset of organizational learning practices- have not kept pace with this development. To explore this concern, we have carried out a study on practices adopted by organizations for learning through projects involving nineteen companies from across Europe and from a range of different industries. We use the concepts of variation, selection and retention in organizational learning to analyze our findings and report the challenges faced by project based organizations in each of the areas highlighted. We conclude that time pressures, centralization and deferral are the key characteristics of learning in project based firms and that these impede project based members in learning from and through projects.centralization;deferral;organizational learning;projects;reflection

Embracing Causal Complexity: The Emergence of a Neo-Configurational Perspective
Causal complexity has long been recognized as a ubiquitous feature underlying organizational phenomena, yet current theories and methodologies in management are for the most part not well suited to its direct study. The introduction of the Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) configurational approach has led to a reinvigoration of configurational theory that embraces causal complexity explicitly. We argue that the burgeoning research using QCA represents more than a novel methodology; it constitutes the emergence of a neo-configurational perspective to the study of management and organizations that enables a fine-grained conceptualization and empirical investigation of causal complexity through the logic of set theory. In this article, we identify four foundational elements that characterize this emerging neoconfigurational perspective: 1) conceptualizing cases as set theoretic configurations; 2) calibrating casesâ memberships into sets; 3) viewing causality in terms of necessity and sufficiency relations between sets; and, 4) conducting counterfactual analysis of unobserved configurations. We then present a comprehensive review of the use of QCA in management studies that aims to capture the evolution of the neo-configurational perspective among management scholars. We close with a discussion of a research agenda that can further this neoconfigurational approach and thereby shift the attention of management research away from a focus on net effects and towards examining causal complexity
SEM Leadership Impact on Psychological Empowerment, Interorganizational Trust, and the Value Co-creation Environment
An unabating drive for continuous innovation in B2B manufacturing occurs due to global competitive pressures and shareholders demanding firm growth. Companies may emphasize partnerships and strategic alliances in this competitive environment to build value and create competitive advantage through innovation and worker ingenuity. This study investigates whether and how a combination of servant, empowering, and mindful leadership styles (SEM Leadership) influences the group culture by increasing the presence of psychological empowerment (PE), interorganizational trust (IOT), and cultivating a value co-creation context (VCC). The value co-creation process between supplier and customer is within management influence and represents a vital management lever to facilitate this required growth. The fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis used in this investigation focuses on the conditions and outcomes in the boundary space between supplier and customer, assessing the necessity or sufficiency of SEM Leadership styles to foster an innovative culture. The research subjects are sales and procurement employees in the US steel-producing and consuming industry. The study discusses SEM leadershipâs ability to psychologically empower boundary spanners who effectively cultivate and build interorganizational trust that, over time, becomes institutionalized. The main finding upholds the necessity and sufficiency of SEM Leadership for a value co-creation environment. Additionally, the research demonstrates some level of interchangeability between servant, empowering, and mindful leadership in achieving organizational results. This research suggests combining leadership styles might be better than adopting a singular style

Studying Configurations with QCA: Best Practices in Strategy and Organization Research
Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) is increasingly applied in strategy and organization research. The main purpose of our essay is to support this growing community of QCA scholars by identifying best practices that can help guide researchers through the key stages of a QCA empirical study (model building, sampling, calibration, data analysis, reporting and interpretation of findings) and by providing examples of such practices drawn from strategy and organization studies. Coupled with this main purpose, we respond to Millerâs (2017) essay on configuration research by highlighting our points of agreement regarding his recommendations for configurational research and by addressing some of his concerns regarding QCA. Our article thus contributes to configurational research by articulating how to leverage QCA for enriching configurational theories of strategy and organization
