    Non-functional requirements: size measurement and testing with COSMIC-FFP

    The non-functional requirements (NFRs) of software systems are well known to add a degree of uncertainty to process of estimating the cost of any project. This paper contributes to the achievement of more precise project size measurement through incorporating NFRs into the functional size quantification process. We report on an initial solution proposed to deal with the problem of quantitatively assessing the NFR modeling process early in the project, and of generating test cases for NFR verification purposes. The NFR framework has been chosen for the integration of NFRs into the requirements modeling process and for their quantitative assessment. Our proposal is based on the functional size measurement method, COSMIC-FFP, adopted in 2003 as the ISO/IEC 19761 standard. Also in this paper, we extend the use of COSMIC-FFP for NFR testing purposes. This is an essential step for improving NFR development and testing effort estimates, and consequently for managing the scope of NFRs. We discuss the merits of the proposed approach and the open questions related to its design

    Is the earnings-schooling relationship linear? a semiparametric analysis

    Using data from Labor Force Surveys (LFS), this study implements additive models to analyze the impact of schooling on wages. It also uses the Sperlich, Tjostheim and Yang (2002) test to validate the existence of interaction terms. Results confirm that the earnings-schooling relationship exhibits convexity. However, the degree to which the said relationship is convex is materially affected by the presence of the interaction component in the additive wage function.schooling

    Cancer gene prioritization by integrative analysis of mRNA expression and DNA copy number data: a comparative review

    A variety of genome-wide profiling techniques are available to probe complementary aspects of genome structure and function. Integrative analysis of heterogeneous data sources can reveal higher-level interactions that cannot be detected based on individual observations. A standard integration task in cancer studies is to identify altered genomic regions that induce changes in the expression of the associated genes based on joint analysis of genome-wide gene expression and copy number profiling measurements. In this review, we provide a comparison among various modeling procedures for integrating genome-wide profiling data of gene copy number and transcriptional alterations and highlight common approaches to genomic data integration. A transparent benchmarking procedure is introduced to quantitatively compare the cancer gene prioritization performance of the alternative methods.     Likelihood Non-Gaussianity in Large-Scale Structure Analyses

    Standard present day large-scale structure (LSS) analyses make a major assumption in their Bayesian parameter inference --- that the likelihood has a Gaussian form. For summary statistics currently used in LSS, this assumption, even if the underlying density field is Gaussian, cannot be correct in detail. We investigate the impact of this assumption on two recent LSS analyses: the Beutler et al. (2017) power spectrum multipole (PP_\ell) analysis and the Sinha et al. (2017) group multiplicity function (ζ\zeta) analysis. Using non-parametric divergence estimators on mock catalogs originally constructed for covariance matrix estimation, we identify significant non-Gaussianity in both the PP_\ell and ζ\zeta likelihoods. We then use Gaussian mixture density estimation and Independent Component Analysis on the same mocks to construct likelihood estimates that approximate the true likelihood better than the Gaussian pseudopseudo-likelihood. Using these likelihood estimates, we accurately estimate the true posterior probability distribution of the Beutler et al. (2017) and Sinha et al. (2017) parameters. Likelihood non-Gaussianity shifts the fσ8f\sigma_8 constraint by 0.44σ-0.44\sigma, but otherwise, does not significantly impact the overall parameter constraints of Beutler et al. (2017). For the ζ\zeta analysis, using the pseudo-likelihood significantly underestimates the uncertainties and biases the constraints of Sinha et al. (2017) halo occupation parameters. For logM1\log M_1 and α\alpha, the posteriors are shifted by +0.43σ+0.43\sigma and 0.51σ-0.51\sigma and broadened by 42%42\% and 66%66\%, respectively. The divergence and likelihood estimation methods we present provide a straightforward framework for quantifying the impact of likelihood non-Gaussianity and deriving more accurate parameter constraints.Comment: 33 pages, 7 figure
