Establishing a Multi-Thesauri-Scenario based on SKOS and Cross-Concordances
This case study proposes a scenario with three topic-related thesauri, which
have been connected with bilateral cross-concordances as part of a major
terminology mapping initiative in the project KoMoHe (Mayr & Petras, 2008). The
thesauri have already been or will be converted to SKOS and in order to not
omit the relevant crosswalks, the mapping properties of SKOS will be used for

Methods for Matching of Linked Open Social Science Data
In recent years, the concept of Linked Open Data (LOD), has gained popularity and acceptance across various communities and domains. Science politics and organizations claim that the potential of semantic technologies and data exposed in this manner may support and enhance research processes and infrastructures providing research information and services.
In this thesis, we investigate whether these expectations can be met in the domain of the social sciences. In particular, we analyse and develop methods for matching social scientific data that is published as Linked Data, which we introduce as Linked Open Social Science Data. Based on expert interviews and a prototype application, we investigate the current consumption of LOD in the social sciences and its requirements. Following these insights, we first focus on the complete publication of Linked Open Social Science Data by extending and developing domain-specific ontologies for representing research communities, research data and thesauri. In the second part, methods for matching Linked Open Social Science Data are developed that address particular patterns and characteristics of the data typically used in social research. The results of this work contribute towards enabling a meaningful application of Linked Data in a scientific domain
The Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS): a situation report for the HIVE Project
HIVE (Helping Interdisciplinary Vocabularies Engineering) es un proyecto financiado por el IMLS (Institute of Museums and Library Services), e indirectamente, en Dryad, ambos proyectos en colaboración del Metadata Research Center y el National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent) in Durham, North Carolina. Con el desarrollo de HIVE se pretende resolver esta problemática mediante una propuesta de generación automática de metadatos que permita la integración dinámica de vocabularios controlados especÃficos. Para asistir la integración de vocabularios se seleccionó SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organisation System), un estándar del World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) para la representación de sistemas de organización del conocimiento o vocabularios, como tesauros, esquemas de clasificación, sistemas de encabezamiento de materias y taxonomÃas, en el marco de la Web Semántica.El presente informe realiza un análisis exhaustivo de la situación en cuanto a la aplicación de SKOS. El estudio incluye una detallada revisión de literatura cientÃfica y recursos web sobre el modelo, una selección de los proyectos, iniciativas, herramientas, grupos de investigación claves y cualquier otro tipo de información que pudiera ser de relevancia para el logro de los objetivos del proyecto HIVE. On the evaluation of thesaurus tools compatible with the Semantic Web
P. 711-722Thesauri are valuable knowledge organization systems (KOSs) that support advanced information retrieval. The Semantic Web has
brought a renewed interest in thesauri as a support for semantic searches and other added-value services. Tools that manage thesauri
permit them to be created, edited and queried. The integrity restrictions on thesauri should also be controlled by these tools.
However, there is also the possibility of thesaurus exchange, which becomes relevant in the Semantic Web context, where information
exchange is a crucial facility. In fact, interoperability at the information level has received an important boost with the stabilization
of the SKOS standard as a World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Recommendation. Furthermore, the feasibility of integrating software
is a valuable feature for software developers. An evaluation framework for thesaurus tools is proposed, which includes the issues
of functionalities, construct support, integrity, information interoperability and feasibility of integrating software. It is original in focusing

Integration of distributed terminology resources to facilitate subject cross-browsing for library portal systems
With the increase in the number of distributed library information resources, users
may have to interact with different user interfaces, learn to switch their mental models
between these interfaces, and familiarise themselves with controlled vocabularies
used by different resources. For this reason, library professionals have developed
library portals to integrate these distributed information resources, and assist end-users
in cross-accessing distributed resources via a single access point in their own
library. There are two important subject-based services that a library portal system
might be able to provide. The first is a federated search service, which refers to a
process where a user can input a query to cross-search a number of information
resources. The second is a subject cross-browsing service, which can offer a
knowledge navigation tree to link subject schemes used by distributed resources.
However, the development of subject cross-searching and browsing services has been
impeded by the heterogeneity of different KOS (Knowledge Organisation System)
used by different information resources. Due to the lack of mappings between
different KOS, it is impossible to offer a subject cross-browsing service for a library

Este estudio presenta una metodologÃa evaluativa que posibilita el análisis sistemático de herramientas para la gestión de tesauros mediante la aplicación de un conjunto de criterios que tienen en cuenta el propósito, las funcionalidades de la aplicación, el mantenimiento de la integridad o coherencia del vocabulario, asà como otras cuestiones cruciales referidas a la interoperabilidad, con especial atención a la compatibilidad con los estándares de la Web Semántica (RDF/SKOS), a la integración de estas herramientas en otros sistemas de información, la interoperabilidad de la información contenida o la habilidad para combinar tesauros procedentes de diferentes fuentesS
Semantic Interoperability in Digital Library Systems
This report is a state-of-the-art overview of activities and research being undertaken in areas relating to semantic interoperability in digital library systems. It has been undertaken as part of the cluster activity of WP5: Knowledge Extraction and Semantic Interoperability (KESI). The authors and contributors draw on the research expertise and experience of a number of organisations (UKOLN, ICS-FORTH, NETLAB, TUC-MUSIC, University of Glamorgan) as well as several work-packages (WP5: Knowledge Extraction and Semantic Interoperability; WP3: Audio-Visual and Non-traditional Objects) within the DELOS2 NoE. In addition, a workshop was held [KESI Workshop Sept. 2004] (co-located with ECDL 2004) in order to provide a forum for the discussion of issues relevant to the topic of this report. We are grateful to those who participated in the forum and for their valuable comments, which have helped to shape this report. Definitions of interoperability, syntactic interoperability and semantic interoperability are presented noting that semantic interoperability is very much about matching concepts as a basis.
