    Evaluating cross-organizational ERP requirements engineering practices: a focus group study

    This focus group study presents our first validation of practices for engineering the coordination requirements in cross-organizational Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) projects. The study evaluates 13 practices addressing a variety of coordination aspects crucial to ERP projects. These practices are results in previously published research publications by the first author. The practices are formulated in response to practitioners' needs at ERP adopting organizations. The proposed practices have now reached the stage where we need some independent feedback as to the extent to which they fit the realities of practitioners. We perform this validation by means of a qualitative research approach, namely the focus group method. Current software engineering literature provides few examples of using focus groups in the evaluation of good software development practices. Because of this, providing reflections on our focus-group-based validation experiences will be of value to both the research community and practitioners

    How Do Real Options Concepts Fit in Agile Requirements Engineering?

    Agile requirements engineering is driven by creating business value for the client and heavily involves the client in decision-making under uncertainty. Real option thinking seems to be suitable in supporting the client’s decision making process at inter-iteration time. This paper investigates the fit between real option thinking and agile requirements engineering. We first look into previously published experiences in the agile software engineering literature to identify (i) ‘experience clusters’ suggesting the ways in which real option concepts fit into the agile requirements process and (ii) ‘experience gaps’ and under-researched agile requirements decision-making topics which require further empirical studies. Furthermore, we conducted a cross-case study in eight agile development organizations and interviewed 11 practitioners about their decision-making process. The results suggest that options are almost always identified, reasoned about and acted upon. They are not expressed in quantitative terms, however, they are instead explicitly or implicitly taken\ud into account during the decision-making process at interiteration time

    Nonprofit Performance Management: Using Data to Measure and Improve Programs

    Tracking and measuring data can give nonprofits a better understanding of the populations they serve and how they serve them. It can also help them identify areas they can improve to boost the reach and effectiveness of their programs. But many organizations struggle with the idea of using data.How do successful nonprofits go about the process of implementing their data practices? What software do they use? What are the obstacles they face, and how do they overcome them? To find out, we reached out to our network of experts and consultants for examples of organizations that were successfully using data to improve and direct their work, and narrowed their list of recommendations down to 10 nonprofits of different sizes, missions, and locations.We talked to staffers at each who were involved with data and analyzed the information we gathered for common themes, best practices, and any patterns that might be useful. We also asked them for advice for other organizations looking to replicate their successes and learn from their mistakes.From those 10 organizations, we chose seven for case studies about the different ways they were using data.     What Influences the Diffusion of Grassroots Innovations for Sustainability? Investigating Community Currency Niches

    Community action for sustainability is a promising site of socio-technical innovation. Here we test the applicability of co-evolutionary niche theories of innovation diffusion (Strategic Niche Management, SNM) to the context of ‘grassroots innovations’. We present new empirical findings from an international study of 12 community currency niches (such as LETS, time banks, local currencies). These are parallel systems of exchange, designed to operate alongside mainstream money, meeting additional sustainability needs. Our findings confirm SNM predictions that niche-level activity correlates with diffusion success, but we highlight additional or confounding factors, and how niche theories might be adapted to better fit civil-society innovations. In so doing, we develop a model of grassroots innovation niche diffusion which builds on existing work and tailors it to this specific context. The paper concludes with a series of theoretically-informed recommendations for practitioners and policymakers to support the development and potential of grassroots innovations

    In this Article I seek to explore, not resolve, some of the issues and tensions in the role of temporality in achieving justice through mediative processes and to suggest some correctives at the practice level, as well as encourage some deeper thinking at the theoretical level. I focus here on issues of expression of temporality ( the past ) in the justice and mediation question, not on issues of how the past should be judged - by the rule of law, culture, or universal human rights principles, or even how it can be managed when understandings of the past conflict or cannot be resolved. I leave those bigger questions for another day or another writer
