Cohesion and translation variation: Corpus-based analysis of translation varieties

In this study, we analyse cohesion in human and machine translations that we call `translation varieties' as defined by Lapshinova-Koltunski (2017) -- translation types differing in the translation methods involved. We expect variation in the distribution of different cohesive devices which occur in translations. Variation in translation can be caused by different factors, e.g. by systemic contrasts or ambiguities in both source and target languages. It is known that variation in English-to-German translations depends on devices of cohesion involved. We extract quantitative evidence for cohesive devices from a corpus and analyse them with descriptive techniques to see where the differences lie. We include not only English-German translation into our analyses, but also also English and German non-translated texts, representing the source and the target language. Similarities and differences between translated and non-translated texts could provide us with the information on the original of this variation, which might be caused by translationese features

Disambiguating Discourse Connectives for Statistical Machine Translation

This paper shows that the automatic labeling of discourse connectives with the relations they signal, prior to machine translation (MT), can be used by phrase-based statistical MT systems to improve their translations. This improvement is demonstrated here when translating from English to four target languages - French, German, Italian and Arabic - using several test sets from recent MT evaluation campaigns. Using automatically labeled data for training, tuning and testing MT systems is beneficial on condition that labels are sufficiently accurate, typically above 70%. To reach such an accuracy, a large array of features for discourse connective labeling (morpho-syntactic, semantic and discursive) are extracted using state-of-the-art tools and exploited in factored MT models. The translation of connectives is improved significantly, between 0.7% and 10% as measured with the dedicated ACT metric. The improvements depend mainly on the level of ambiguity of the connectives in the test sets

Enforcing Consistent Translation of German Compound Coreferences

Coreferences to a German compound (e.g. Nordwand) can be made using its last constituent (e.g. Wand). Intuitively, both coreferences and the last constituent of the compound should share the same translation. However, since Statistical Machine Translation (SMT) systems translate at sentence level, they both may be translated inconsistently across the document. Several studies focus on document level consistency, but mostly in general terms. This paper presents a method to enforce consistency in this particular case. Using two in-domain phrase-based SMT systems, we analyse the effects of compound coreference translation consistency on translation quality and readability of documents. Experimental results show that our method improves correctness and consistency of those coreferences as well as document readability
