Wireless industrial monitoring and control networks: the journey so far and the road ahead
While traditional wired communication technologies have played a crucial role in industrial monitoring and control networks over the past few decades, they are increasingly proving to be inadequate to meet the highly dynamic and stringent demands of today’s industrial applications, primarily due to the very rigid nature of wired infrastructures. Wireless technology, however, through its increased pervasiveness, has the potential to revolutionize the industry, not only by mitigating the problems faced by wired solutions, but also by introducing a completely new class of applications. While present day wireless technologies made some preliminary inroads in the monitoring domain, they still have severe limitations especially when real-time, reliable distributed control operations are concerned. This article provides the reader with an overview of existing wireless technologies commonly used in the monitoring and control industry. It highlights the pros and cons of each technology and assesses the degree to which each technology is able to meet the stringent demands of industrial monitoring and control networks. Additionally, it summarizes mechanisms proposed by academia, especially serving critical applications by addressing the real-time and reliability requirements of industrial process automation. The article also describes certain key research problems from the physical layer communication for sensor networks and the wireless networking perspective that have yet to be addressed to allow the successful use of wireless technologies in industrial monitoring and control networks
Reliable routing scheme for indoor sensor networks
Indoor Wireless sensor networks require a highly dynamic, adaptive routing scheme to deal with the high rate of topology changes due to fading of indoor wireless channels. Besides that, energy consumption rate needs to be consistently distributed among sensor nodes and efficient utilization of battery power is essential. If only the link reliability metric is considered in the routing scheme, it may create long hops routes, and the high quality paths will be frequently used. This leads to shorter lifetime of such paths; thereby the entire network's lifetime will be significantly minimized. This paper briefly presents a reliable load-balanced routing (RLBR) scheme for indoor ad hoc wireless sensor networks, which integrates routing information from different layers. The proposed scheme aims to redistribute the relaying workload and the energy usage among relay sensor nodes to achieve balanced energy dissipation; thereby maximizing the functional network lifetime. RLBR scheme was tested and benchmarked against the TinyOS-2.x implementation of MintRoute on an indoor testbed comprising 20 Mica2 motes and low power listening (LPL) link layer provided by CC1000 radio. RLBR scheme consumes less energy for communications while reducing topology repair latency and achieves better connectivity and communication reliability in terms of end-to-end packets delivery performance
Power Aware Routing for Sensor Databases
Wireless sensor networks offer the potential to span and monitor large
geographical areas inexpensively. Sensor network databases like TinyDB are the
dominant architectures to extract and manage data in such networks. Since
sensors have significant power constraints (battery life), and high
communication costs, design of energy efficient communication algorithms is of
great importance. The data flow in a sensor database is very different from
data flow in an ordinary network and poses novel challenges in designing
efficient routing algorithms. In this work we explore the problem of energy
efficient routing for various different types of database queries and show that
in general, this problem is NP-complete. We give a constant factor
approximation algorithm for one class of query, and for other queries give
heuristic algorithms. We evaluate the efficiency of the proposed algorithms by
simulation and demonstrate their near optimal performance for various network
sizes
Energy Efficient Clustering and Routing in Mobile Wireless Sensor Network
A critical need in Mobile Wireless Sensor Network (MWSN) is to achieve energy
efficiency during routing as the sensor nodes have scarce energy resource. The
nodes' mobility in MWSN poses a challenge to design an energy efficient routing
protocol. Clustering helps to achieve energy efficiency by reducing the
organization complexity overhead of the network which is proportional to the
number of nodes in the network. This paper proposes a novel hybrid multipath
routing algorithm with an efficient clustering technique. A node is selected as
cluster head if it has high surplus energy, better transmission range and least
mobility. The Energy Aware (EA) selection mechanism and the Maximal Nodal
Surplus Energy estimation technique incorporated in this algorithm improves the
energy performance during routing. Simulation results can show that the
proposed clustering and routing algorithm can scale well in dynamic and energy
deficient mobile sensor network.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
Resilient networking in wireless sensor networks
This report deals with security in wireless sensor networks (WSNs),
especially in network layer. Multiple secure routing protocols have been
proposed in the literature. However, they often use the cryptography to secure
routing functionalities. The cryptography alone is not enough to defend against
multiple attacks due to the node compromise. Therefore, we need more
algorithmic solutions. In this report, we focus on the behavior of routing
protocols to determine which properties make them more resilient to attacks.
Our aim is to find some answers to the following questions. Are there any
existing protocols, not designed initially for security, but which already
contain some inherently resilient properties against attacks under which some
portion of the network nodes is compromised? If yes, which specific behaviors
are making these protocols more resilient? We propose in this report an
overview of security strategies for WSNs in general, including existing attacks
and defensive measures. In this report we focus at the network layer in
particular, and an analysis of the behavior of four particular routing
protocols is provided to determine their inherent resiliency to insider
attacks. The protocols considered are: Dynamic Source Routing (DSR),
Gradient-Based Routing (GBR), Greedy Forwarding (GF) and Random Walk Routing
(RWR)
