Damn funny la! - A Comparative Corpus Study on Intensifiers in Singapore English

    Get PDF
Tavoitteena on laajentaa vahvistussanojen tutkimusta englannin kielen uudempiin varieteetteihin.

Subtitling Cookery Programmes from English to Traditional Chinese: Taiwan as a Case Study

Within translation studies, the topic of food and translation is still underresearched and the understanding of subtitling cookery programmes is also very limited. This research hopes to bridge the current research gap, by providing an overview of the classification of food-related texts and their embedded linguistic characteristics, thus expanding the knowledge in regard to this matter. // The research also sets out to understand the nature of two specific linguistic items, sensory language and culture-specific references, as well as the translation strategies used in subtitling them. The methodological foundation of the thesis builds upon the framework of the Toury’s(1995) notion of translation norms, realised by Pedersen’s analytical model. In addition, the framework of product experience is also consulted to help contextualise sensory language and its classification. // The analysis is carried out on a corpus of 480 minutes which includes two cookery programmes and represents two formats: the modern format, Jamie’s 15-Minute Meals (Channel 4, 2012) and the cooking competition format, The Taste (Channel 4, 2014). All sensory language and culture-specific references present in the corpus have been identified and their translation from English into Traditional Chinese analysed from both quantitative and qualitative viewpoints in an attempt to reveal the prevalent translational trends

Crime and its Control in the People's Republic of China

    Get PDF
The Centre for Criminology at the University of Hong Kong was established in 1999 to provide a home for indigenous studies of crime and criminal justice in Hong Kong and the region. As part of this objective it sought to provide a platform for both academics and practitioners to share their knowledge and to assist in the development of effective strategies to deal with the increasingly sophisticated problem of crime. The annual symposium on 'Crime and its Control in Greater China' functions as a forum to discuss interdisciplinary research on crime relevant to Greater China. The various components of Greater China have common cultural, linguistic and economic bonds that give rise to some similar crime problems and opportunities to resolve them. Therefore it seemed appropriate that both scholars and practitioners from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan should meet to discuss their research on these issues. In the furtherance of these objectives it has been gratifying that the Chinese Peoples' Public Security University has participated in these events and co-hosted the 3rd Symposium. They also organised a Symposium in Beijing in 2002 to discuss ‘Criminal Trends and Countermeasures’and invited the Centre for Criminology to co-host, that event. This is the type of synergy that our annual event aspires to generate. A conscious intention of the annual symposium is to be broad in terms of both the range of topics covered and the depth of experience of the speakers. For this reason the symposium has provided a platform for postgraduate students to introduce their research as well as for well-established scholars with an international reputation for excellence in their chosen area of research. To further the concept of providing a bridge between academia and practice, several speakers are usually invited from the private sector to present their views on the problems and issues that concern them. These proceedings provide a record of selected papers presented at the various symposia and demonstrate the wide variety of topics covered and interests of speakers. I hope this bilingual event will help to fill the need that exists for a joint effort to review and discuss developments in criminology relevant to Greater China

Situating Taiwanese identities: social transformations, young people and television drama

    Get PDF
This thesis examines the recent production and consumption of television dramas in Taiwan in the context of Taiwan's complicated modem history, rapid social transitions, budding self-assertiveness and changing relationships with regional and global players. The detailed analysis in this subject matter contributes to wider debates in the media globalisation theory, reaffirming the continuing development of an East Asian cultural trading block and pointing to a formation of the distinctive regional popular culture that is more effective in shaping up the local production and consumption activities. The rising regional dynamism in Taiwan's television drama production and consumption since the late 1990s has been encapsulated in this thesis in three main points: 1. The findings from detailed content analysis on programming schedules of seven locally-run channels has shown that regional programming is more integrated with local business while global programming (mostly American) has shifted to be produced and distributed single-handedly by the transnational media corporations. 2. The first-hand audience interviews revealed a subtle difference in young people's viewing experiences of the global and the regional programming. Situated in a broader social context, their experience of the former has primarily crouched on a fantasy of liberal individualism while the latter provided a desirable template for emulation in everyday life. 3. The thesis also discussed the emergence of a new drama genre on Taiwanese television-Idol drama, which can be seen as the reactions to the widespread regional television deregulation, commercialisation and growing intra-regional cultural trade. Its late development has also epitomised An inevitable negotiation of local characteristic with regional forces
