A system for the simulation and evaluation of satellite communication networks
With the emergence of a new era in satellite communications brought about by NASA's thrust into the Ka band with multibeam and onboard processing technologies, new and innovative techniques for evaluating these concepts and systems are required. To this end, NASA, in conjunction with its extensive program for advanced communications technology development, has undertaken to develop a concept for the simulation and evaluation of a complete communications network. Incorporated in this network will be proof of concept models of the latest technologies proposed for future satellite communications systems. These include low noise receivers, matrix switches, baseband processors, and solid state and tube type high power amplifiers. To accomplish this, numerous supporting technologies must be added to those aforementioned proof of concept models. These include controllers for synchronization, order wire, and resource allocation, gain compensation, signal leveling, power augmentation, and rain fade and range delay simulation. Taken together, these will be assembled to comprise a system capable of addressing numerous design and performance questions. The simulation and evaluation system as planned will be modular in design and implementation, capable of modification and updating to track and evaluate a continuum emerging concepts and technologies
Issues Related to the Emergence of the Information Superhighway and California Societal Changes, IISTPS Report 96-4
The Norman Y. Mineta International Institute for Surface Transportation Policy Studies (IISTPS) at San José State University (SJSU) conducted this project to review the continuing development of the Internet and the Information Superhighway. Emphasis was placed on an examination of the impact on commuting and working patterns in California, and an analysis of how public transportation agencies, including Caltrans, might take advantage of the new communications technologies. The document reviews the technology underlying the current Internet “structure” and examines anticipated developments. It is important to note that much of the research for this limited-scope project was conducted during 1995, and the topic is so rapidly evolving that some information is almost automatically “dated.” The report also examines how transportation agencies are basically similar in structure and function to other business entities, and how they can continue to utilize the emerging technologies to improve internal and external communications. As part of a detailed discussion of specific transportation agency functions, it is noted that the concept of a “Roundtable Forum,” growing out of developments in Concurrent Engineering, can provide an opportunity for representatives from multiple jurisdictions to utilize the Internet for more coordinated decision-making. The report also included an extensive analysis of demographic trends in California in recent years, such as commute and recreational activities, and identifies how the emerging technologies may impact future changes
The Revolution Within: ICT and the Shifting Knowledge Base of the World’s Largest Companies.
This empirical paper analyses the importance of information and communications technologies (ICT) in the technological diversification trend among the world’s largest manufacturing firms during the 1980s and 1990s. The objective of the research is twofold: firstly, to emphasise the emerging differences among technologies when companies from different industries patent outside their traditional technological capabilities; secondly, to investigate whether the tendency among large companies from all industries to patent in ICT is distinctive when compared with the tendency to patent in other technologies. We find that technological diversification in large companies has clearly occurred in ICTs. Non-ICT specialist industries increasingly develop, rather than just utilise, the cluster of ICT-related technologies. We conclude that the development of corporate capabilities in the key technologies of the emerging ICT paradigm is more widespread than previously emphasised in the literature. One implication of this observation is that technological diversification and the information revolution may be related phenomena.Technological diversification, Large firms, ICT, Patents.
Advanced 3-V semiconductor technology assessment
Against a background of an extensive survey of the present state of the art in the field of III-V semiconductors for operation at microwave frequencies (or gigabit rate speeds), likely requirements of future space communications systems are identified, competing technologies and physical device limitations are discussed, and difficulties in implementing emerging technologies are projected. On the basis of these analyses, specific research and development programs required for the development of future systems components are recommended
Developing an Efficient DMCIS with Next-Generation Wireless Networks
The impact of extreme events across the globe is extraordinary which
continues to handicap the advancement of the struggling developing societies
and threatens most of the industrialized countries in the globe. Various fields
of Information and Communication Technology have widely been used for efficient
disaster management; but only to a limited extent though, there is a tremendous
potential for increasing efficiency and effectiveness in coping with disasters
with the utilization of emerging wireless network technologies. Early warning,
response to the particular situation and proper recovery are among the main
focuses of an efficient disaster management system today. Considering these
aspects, in this paper we propose a framework for developing an efficient
Disaster Management Communications and Information System (DMCIS) which is
basically benefited by the exploitation of the emerging wireless network

How Can Optical Communications Shape the Future of Deep Space Communications? A Survey
With a large number of deep space (DS) missions anticipated by the end of
this decade, reliable and high capacity DS communications systems are needed
more than ever. Nevertheless, existing DS communications technologies are far
from meeting such a goal. Improving current DS communications systems does not
only require system engineering leadership but also, very crucially, an
investigation of potential emerging technologies that overcome the unique
challenges of ultra-long DS communications links. To the best of our knowledge,
there has not been any comprehensive surveys of DS communications technologies
over the last decade. Free space optical (FSO) technology is an emerging DS
technology, proven to acquire lower communications systems size, weight, and
power (SWaP) and achieve a very high capacity compared to its counterpart radio
frequency (RF) technology, the current used DS technology. In this survey, we
discuss the pros and cons of deep space optical communications (DSOC).
Furthermore, we review the modulation, coding, and detection, receiver, and
protocols schemes and technologies for DSOC. We provide, for the very first
time, thoughtful discussions about implementing orbital angular momentum (OAM)
and quantum communications (QC) for DS. We elaborate on how these technologies
among other field advances, including interplanetary network, and RF/FSO
systems improve reliability, capacity, and security and address related
implementation challenges and potential solutions. This paper provides a
holistic survey in DSOC technologies gathering 200+ fragmented literature and
including novel perspectives aiming to setting the stage for more developments
