Ethernet - a survey on its fields of application

    Get PDF
During the last decades, Ethernet progressively became the most widely used local area networking (LAN) technology. Apart from LAN installations, Ethernet became also attractive for many other fields of application, ranging from industry to avionics, telecommunication, and multimedia. The expanded application of this technology is mainly due to its significant assets like reduced cost, backward-compatibility, flexibility, and expandability. However, this new trend raises some problems concerning the services of the protocol and the requirements for each application. Therefore, specific adaptations prove essential to integrate this communication technology in each field of application. Our primary objective is to show how Ethernet has been enhanced to comply with the specific requirements of several application fields, particularly in transport, embedded and multimedia contexts. The paper first describes the common Ethernet LAN technology and highlights its main features. It reviews the most important specific Ethernet versions with respect to each application field’s requirements. Finally, we compare these different fields of application and we particularly focus on the fundamental concepts and the quality of service capabilities of each proposal

A new paradigm for SpeckNets:inspiration from fungal colonies

    Get PDF
In this position paper, we propose the development of a new biologically inspired paradigm based on fungal colonies, for the application to pervasive adaptive systems. Fungal colonies have a number of properties that make them an excellent candidate for inspiration for engineered systems. Here we propose the application of such inspiration to a speckled computing platform. We argue that properties from fungal colonies map well to properties and requirements for controlling SpeckNets and suggest that an existing mathematical model of a fungal colony can developed into a new computational paradigm

Using mixed-reality to develop smart environments

Smart homes, smart cars, smart classrooms are now a reality as the world becomes increasingly interconnected by ubiquitous computing technology. The next step is to interconnect such environments, however there are a number of significant barriers to advancing research in this area, most notably the lack of available environments, standards and tools etc. A possible solution is the use of simulated spaces, nevertheless as realistic as strive to make them, they are, at best, only approximations to the real spaces, with important differences such as utilising idealised rather than noisy sensor data. In this respect, an improvement to simulation is emulation, which uses specially adapted physical components to imitate real systems and environments. In this paper we present our work-in-progress towards the creation of a development tool for intelligent environments based on the interconnection of simulated, emulated and real intelligent spaces using a distributed model of mixed reality. To do so, we propose the use of physical/virtual components (xReality objects) able to be combined through a 3D graphical user interface, sharing real-time information. We present three scenarios of interconnected real and emulated spaces, used for education, achieving integration between real and virtual worlds

InfoVis experience enhancement through mediated interaction

    Get PDF
Information visualization is an experience in which both the aesthetic representations and interaction are part. Such an experience can be augmented through close consideration of its major components. Interaction is crucial to the experience, yet it has seldom been adequately explored in the field. We claim that direct mediated interaction can augment such an experience. This paper discusses the reasons behind such a claim and proposes a mediated interactive manipulation scheme based on the notion of directness. It also describes the ways in which such a claim will be validated. The Literature Knowledge Domain (LKD) is used as the concrete domain around which the discussions will be held

The Internet of Things: A Main Source of Big Data Analytics

IoT is regarded as a platform or a framework for the objects/devices to interact with one another in an electronically manner with the world around. Not only the humans can communicate with one another using system, but rather IoT had made possible for the system to communicate with each other too. It is being enabled by the presence of other independent technologies which make fundamental components of IoT. One of such technology is Big Data Analytics. Big data has emerged as a connecting point between the objects on the internet. Massive data is generated in day to day life and data mining has played a vital role in converting the data to information useful for the end users. But as the amount of data kept on increasing, it became difficult to extract useful information from it. It is when Big Data Analytics came into picture. In today’s world, various sensors interact over a wireless network by exchanging huge amount of data with one another. It is with the help of IoT, designing of a good infrastructure for storing and managing such huge amount of sensor data became possible. It resulted in an easy search and utilization of sensor data by the users. This paper deals with the so called relationship between IOT and Big data. In particular, the focus of the paper will be in how the things in IOT generate massive data (Big Data) and if both combined then how it can lead to wonders in real world.
