Advances in the Hierarchical Emergent Behaviors (HEB) approach to autonomous vehicles

    Get PDF
Widespread deployment of autonomous vehicles (AVs) presents formidable challenges in terms on handling scalability and complexity, particularly regarding vehicular reaction in the face of unforeseen corner cases. Hierarchical Emergent Behaviors (HEB) is a scalable architecture based on the concepts of emergent behaviors and hierarchical decomposition. It relies on a few simple but powerful rules to govern local vehicular interactions. Rather than requiring prescriptive programming of every possible scenario, HEB’s approach relies on global behaviors induced by the application of these local, well-understood rules. Our first two papers on HEB focused on a primal set of rules applied at the first hierarchical level. On the path to systematize a solid design methodology, this paper proposes additional rules for the second level, studies through simulations the resultant richer set of emergent behaviors, and discusses the communica-tion mechanisms between the different levels.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

ARE INDONESIAN NURSES READY FOR HEALTHCARE ROBOTS DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC?

    Get PDF
Healthcare robots are used in Indonesia and other countries to combat COVID-19 pandemic. This article was aimed to describe a perspective about healthcare robots, and to recommend ways for Indonesian nurses to engage with healthcare robots during the COVID-19 pandemic. One view hindering healthcare robot appreciation as partners of nurses is its threat to their practice. However, with the current environment of COVID-19 ‘frontline’ situations, increasing infections of patients with SARS COV2, limited personal protective equipment, and the fastidious nature of maintaining social distancing and mask-wearing, it may be best to view healthcare robots as significant partners to facilitate safety, and ease the demands of nursing care activities in order to safeguard human lives while enhancing human well-being. Educating healthcare practitioners about healthcare robot programming and assurance of its safe and secure use can advance robot appreciation as partners in healthcare. These goals, challenges, and recommendations can provide Indonesian nurses some pathways-to-readiness towards a partnership involving healthcare robots, particularly during this COVID-19 pandemic, and in the future

A Review of Verbal and Non-Verbal Human-Robot Interactive Communication

    Get PDF
In this paper, an overview of human-robot interactive communication is presented, covering verbal as well as non-verbal aspects of human-robot interaction. Following a historical introduction, and motivation towards fluid human-robot communication, ten desiderata are proposed, which provide an organizational axis both of recent as well as of future research on human-robot communication. Then, the ten desiderata are examined in detail, culminating to a unifying discussion, and a forward-looking conclusion

Representation and use of chemistry in the global electronic age.

We present an overview of the current state of public semantic chemistry and propose new approaches at a strategic and a detailed level. We show by example how a model for a Chemical Semantic Web can be constructed using machine-processed data and information from journal articles. This manuscript addresses questions of robotic access to data and its automatic re-use, including the role of Open Access archival of data. This is a pre-refereed preprint allowed by the publisher's (Royal Soc. Chemistry) Green policy. The author's preferred manuscript is an HTML hyperdocument with ca. 20 links to images, some of which are JPEgs and some of which are SVG (scalable vector graphics) including animations. There are also links to molecules in CML, for which the Jmol viewer is recommended. We susgeest that readers who wish to see the full glory of the manuscript, download the Zipped version and unpack on their machine. We also supply a PDF and DOC (Word) version which obviously cannot show the animations, but which may be the best palce to start, particularly for those more interested in the text

Consciousness as information system of the human body

Starting from the observation of the binary character YES/NOT of our decisions in relation to the information received from the environment, determining both our life and specie evolution by adaptation, it is defined the info-creational field and thought as an information operator on this field, allowing to describe the individual EGO as a receiver and producer information system, based on an operational and a programmed informational subsystem. Consciousness appears thus be an integrated information system which allows the adaptation to the environment and survival of specie, supported by informed matter (physical body) to maintain functionality of the whole. On this basis, there were identified two main informational circuits of the human body controlled by the consciousness: (i) the attitude as a short-time reaction circuit allowing the immediate adaptation to the environment; (ii) the informational genetic transmission as a large-time process assuring both the evolution by the transference of the new adaptation characteristics to the next generations and the survival of the specie. Observing the anti-entropic nature of the information activity mobilized to support the living structure, there were identified the anti-entropic, antigravitational and reverse temporal arrow features that the thought could access under special focusing conditions, similar to those of antimatter, explaining the paranormal capacities like premonition, psychotherapy, telekinesis and levitation, particularly the cloud dissipation, induced/supported by the mind power
