Communication and Digital Content in Research Network Collaboratories

    Get PDF
In this paper, we explore Collaboratories as a space of communication for research networks between institutions whose focus is on research, development and technological innovation (PD&I). Collaboratories are used to promote communication, increase learning, encourage collaborative construction of knowledge and share information, knowledge and technologies. We also conduct a discussion about communication as a guiding process of the relationships between the participants of the research networks in the Collaboratories. Based on a model of digital content organization, which is part of a transmedia perspective, we also identify the media and the content that can be exchanged.Sociedad Argentina de Informática e Investigación Operativ

Information and Communication Technologies and Informal Scholarly Communication: A Review of the Social Oriented Research

    Get PDF
This article reviews and analyzes findings from research on computer mediated informal scholarly communication. Ten empirical research papers, which show the effects and influences of information & communication technologies (ICTs), or the effects of social contexts on ICTs use in informal scholarly communication, were analyzed and compared. Types of ICTs covered in those studies include e-mails, collaboratories, and electronic forums. The review shows that most of the empirical studies examined the ICTs use effects or consequences. Only a few studies examined the social shaping of ICTs and ICT uses in informal scholarly communication. Based on comparisons of the empirical findings this article summarizes the ICT use effects/consequences as identified in the studies into seven categories and discusses their implications

Collaboratory Digital Libraries for Humanities in the Italian context

    Get PDF
The study investigates the approach to collaboration in Humanities, within the Italian context, to test the possibility of collaborative digital library for scholars. The research hypothesis is that collaboration can foster innovation and scienti c development: therefore, within Humanities, digital libraries can be the collaborative laboratory for research. Thus, understanding perception of scholars towards collaboration, especially online, and comprehending if wiki systems could be the framework of collaboration were the objectives of the study. A qualitative approach has been adopted, using case study as research method: in-depth, semi-structured interviews to Digital Humanities scholars provide data integrated with interviews with two key informants (one of which is prof. Umberto Eco). The results of the study show that Humanities, within Italian context, do appreciate collaboration and the concept of a collaboratory digital library, though several issues need to be solved. In fact, Humanities are still tied with individual work and collaboration is not easy to pursue, for cultural, technical and political reasons. Great e ort needs to be done at many different levels to eliminate obstacles and facilitate online collaboration for scholars. The study provides a draft model for a collaborative digital library arisen from gathered data

Toward a New Policy for Scientific and Technical Communication: the Case of Kyrgyz Republic

    Get PDF
The objective of this policy paper is to formulate a new policy in the field of scientific and technical information (STI) in Kyrgyz Republic in the light of emergence and rapid development of electronic scientific communication. The major problem with communication in science in the Republic is lack of adequate access to information by scientists. An equally serious problem is poor visibility of research conducted in Kyrgyzstan and, as consequence, negligible research impact on academic society globally. The paper proposes an integrated approach to formulation of a new STI policy based on a number of policy components: telecommunication networks, computerization, STI systems, legislation & standards, and education & trainings. Two alternatives were considered: electronic vs. paper-based scientific communication and development of the national STI system vs. cross-national virtual collaboration. The study results in suggesting a number of policy recommendations for identified stakeholders.Comment: Policy Pape

    Informal Communication in Collaboratories

    Get PDF
This study examines how collaboratories affect informal scientific communication. Collaboratories are virtual organizations, where various information technologies are adopted to support distributed scientific work. In this paper, a framework to understand factors affecting informal communication are presented and how these factors play out in collaboratories are discussed. The results of data analysis suggest that collaboratories bring about new opportunities, but there are also barriers to informal communication in collaboratories. Peripheral scientists encounter more barriers than their partners in US and Europe. The paper concludes with a discussion of areas for future research and implications of this study.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/57320/1/14504301187_ftp.pd

Beyond Being Social: Prospects for Transformative Social Computing

    Get PDF
An important analytical lens for considering future trajectories and research issues for social computing is the perspective of positive design, that is, the perspective that asks how collaborative technologies like wikis, e-mail, instant messaging, blogging, microblogging, tagging, social bookmarking, collaborative filtering, social networking services, and online communities of various sorts could support social endeavor in ways never before possible, how they can strengthen the extant strengths of human social interaction. This perspective contrasts with the approach of investigating how inherent limitations of collaborative technology can be ameliorated. This article describes recent design work addressing the challenge of supporting activity awareness in new ways with social computing technologies

The Emerging Distributed Information Systems Infrastructure: Some Implications for ISResearch and Teaching

    Get PDF
The rapidly evolving Worldwide Information Infrastructure (WII) (Neumann, 1994), of which the Internet is arguably the most visible component, marks the emergence of the information superhighway. The WII is very broad in scope and may be seen as a worldwide super-set of the National Information Infrastructure (NII). The NII consists of: (1) thousands of interconnected, interoperable telecommunication networks; (2) computer systems, televisions, fax machines, and other information appliances ; (3) software, information services, and information databases (e.g., digital libraries ); and (4) trained people who can build, maintain, and operate these systems. In the future, the NII will enable all Americans to get the information they need, when they need it, where they need it, for an affordable price (https://WWW.NTIA.DOC.GOV/). In this paper, we use the term Distributed Information Systems Infrastructure (DISI) for a restricted subsystem of the WII consisting of all networked computers and the distributed information systemsthey represent. This paper proposes a framework to organize and view the major components of the DISI and suggests a classification scheme for information tasks. The paper identifies and examines some key issues relating to the content and process of ISresearch and ISteaching. Why can\u27t existing ISframeworks be used directly to study the DISI? Classical ISframeworks have been invaluable in guiding ISwork in the last two decades, but they were developed with traditional ISin mind and fall short in capturing the unique aspects of the emerging DISI. It is clear that the DISI significantly differs from conventional ISin characteristics as well as in the types of opportunities it offers and the consequent risks

The impact of ICT sophistication on geographically distant networks: the case of space physics as seen from France

    Get PDF
This paper examines scientific collaboration between French public research teams and distant partners. We first analyse the role and the development of trust and then, the relation between the degree of sophistication of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and the constraint of geographical proximity. In that purpose, we present a typology of the different kinds of knowledge and a classification of technologies. A case study in the field of space physics allows us to confront our theoretical elements to real life. We study the evolution of ICT sophistication parallel to collaboration patterns. Finally, we give some recommendations for public funding of virtual networks.collaboratory, knowledge transfer, trust, ICT classification, space physics
