Solar energy : is it profitable for agricultural companies to invest in solar energy?
The community is very depended of energy. A big amount of the energy production today is made from fossil fuels that have a big impact on greenhouse gases. According to the Swedish governments environmental targets we have to reduce the climate emissions with 40 % until year 2020. One way to reduce the climate emissions is to produce more renewable energy. Photovoltaic is one of the renewable energy types that can help us to reduce our impact on the environment.
The purpose with the study is to create a calculation tool in a basic level to determine if itÂŽs profitable for agricultural companies to invest in photovoltaic, depending on where in Sweden they are located. In the study we investigated several economic factors that affects if itÂŽs interesting to invest in photovoltaic or not. The financial factors that have biggest impact on the investment are if the company gets the government investment support and the price that the company gets paid for the sold electricity. One other factor that has a big impact is in which cardinal the facility is build, the most profitable cardinal is south. To figure out how the location of the facility impacts the cost of the investment we made a fictive farm that we placed in three different locations in the country. The facility that was placed on a more southern latitude had a lower cost per produced kilowatt hour.
The method in the study is to make three case studies that looks in three different outcomes for the investment. The most profitable outcome of the case studies was when the company got both the government investment support and a high price for the sold electricity. Depending on the location in the country the best outcome gave a profit margin between 39 % and 41 %. The worst outcome gave a profit margin between minus 11 % and minus 15 % for the investment.
We think photovoltaic is very interesting to invest in according to several different reasons. Specially consider the profit margin in some of the outcome in the study
Framtidens brÀnslemix i HÀrnösand
HÀrnösands Energi och Miljö AB (HEMAB) provides district heating in HÀrnösand and is owned by HÀrnösand municipality. The fuel mixture of the district heating plant mainly consists of forest residuals, but also some peat. Whether peat is to be considered a fossil fuel or not is debated, however in most cases it is regarded as a fossil fuel. Therefore, HEMAB is interested in evaluating other types of fuel to replace peat, and therefore be able to claim that their district heating is carbon neutral. Peat is however regarded as a good fuel from a combustion perspective, mainly because it contains large amounts of sulphur, which counteracts corrosion inside the combustion chamber. The purpose of this report is therefore to evaluate and compare other types of fuel that can be used instead of peat. The proposed fuel mixtures were compared with respect to their combustion properties, CO2-emissions, and economic aspects. In addition to this a minor analysis of how an increased domestic production of biofuels may affect district heating companies were made. The proposed fuel mixtures are shown below:
Mix 1 represents a proposal where the peat is replaced by increasing the amount of bark and log wood chips. Sulphur will be added in the form of sulphur granules. This alternative should not need a new environmental permit nor any renovation of the plant. Mix 2 represents a proposal were HEMAB make use of the collected white wood residues in HÀrnösand, Kramfors and SollefteÄ. The peat is replaced by increasing the amounts of log wood chips and bark as well as including white wood residues in the fuel mixture. Sulphur will be added in the form of sulphur granules. The current environmental permit will be enough.
Mix 3 represents a proposal where HEMAB includes wastewater and brown wood residues, in their fuel mixture. The new fuels are being collected at HEMAB:s existing facilities, in addition to this waste water and brown wood residues will be bought from Kramfors and SollefteÄ. Since wastewater contains a lot of sulphur there is no need to add it. For this alternative, a new environmental permit will be needed, and the combustion plant may need to be modified. The results from the calculated key figures indicated that all the proposed fuel mixtures have good combustion properties. Mix 3 had the best results. For Mix 1 and Mix 2 sulphur needs to be added. All the proposed fuel mixtures are cheaper than the current fuel mixture. Mix 1 and Mix 2 should not require any modifications of the plant with exception of the system for adding sulphur. These two fuel mixtures can also be considered renewable whether mix 3 cannot. Mix 3 also comes with the lowest fuel costs. However additional investment costs will be needed and the maintenance costs may increase. An increased domestic production of biofuels is considered to only have a minor impact on the district heating sector. The reason for this being that the biofuels using the same raw materials as the district heating sector is not yet fully commercial developed
How Much Market Do Market-Based Instruments Create?: An Analysis for the Case of "White" Certificates
In the context of economic instruments for more energy efficiency and climate protection, tradable certificates have been investigated for renewable energy and for a number of emissions. In contrast, tradable energy efficiency - or "white" - certificates have only lately been considered as a market-based tool to foster energy efficiency as compared to standards and labelling, for example. Theoretically, there is little doubt about the advantages. In practice, however, somefundamental problems arise. Critical issues are the design of an efficient artificial market for "white" certificates, its compatibility with the European emissions trading system, the identification of a suitable target group for an energy efficiency obligation and the measurement of energy savings as compared to a reference use of energy. We use the theoretical framework of Transaction Cost Economics to elaborate these issues. We conclude that transaction costs and investment specificity will restrict markets for "white" certificates in practise. Long-term contracts rather than spot trade will be the prevailing form of governance for energy efficiency investments.Tradable certificates; Energy efficiency; Transaction cost
The Swedish system with tradable green certificates (TGCâs) is a fairly complex system with a simple basic concept; to increase the renewable electricity production in Sweden through market forces in a cost effective manner. By allowing producers of renewable electricity to sell TGCâs to consumers, the producers receive additional income that makes it more profitable to produce renewable electricity.
However, there is concern among politicians that consumer costs for the TGC-system can be disproportionately high when the deployment goal for renewable electricity is increased. This could cause a supply shortage of TGCâs due to an increase in demand and this could in its turn increase the price of TGCâs. There are also other uncertainties in the system that could induce a supply shortage. Today there is no upper limit for how much a consumer could be obliged to pay for TGCâs. The pricing is determined in a free market and will theoretically end up where the consumer demand curve for TGCâs intersects the producer supply curve for TGCâs.
The purpose of this paper is therefor to investigate the impact on consumer welfare if there is a supply shortage of TGCâs under the current conditions when no price-cap exists. This is then compared with a scenario where a price-cap exists. Economic theory states that the total societal welfare is maximized with free market pricing where equilibrium can be reached between supply and demand. This reasoning does however exclude distribution and equity issues. The consumers bear the full cost for the TGC-system in the current situation and their support for renewable electricity generation might be undermined if their costs become too high.
In a graphical analysis of the supply and demand curves, I sketch the expected relationships that determine the pricing of TGCâs. This shows the interactions between the TGC-market and the electricity market. Based on available data, a calculation of consumer expenses in the year 2010 (when the TGC-price was at its maximum) with and without a price-cap is performed. This hopefully gives a clearer perspective of the costs that the TGC-system entails for the consumer.
The conclusion from the graphical analysis is that a price-cap on the TGC-market can ensure that consumer costs will not rise uncontrollably and also that the price-cap can be designed in such a way as to provide an income to the Treasury. Overall, a decrease of the TGC-price that is derived from a price-cap will increase consumer surplus, but there might also be a certain increase of the electricity price. The estimates of consumer expenditure in the year 2010 show that a price-cap which lowers the TGC-price by 62% leads to a decrease in consumer costs for TGCâs and their share of the total cost for electricity. Consumer costs for TGCâs are however only a small percentage of the total cost for electricity and if the price of electricity rises by more than 4 % the consumerâs overall electricity costs will be the same as before a price-cap on TGCâs was introduced.
Before the need for a price-cap on TGCâs is determined, further research must be undertaken to determine what the effect will be on the price of electricity. However, if the TGC-market is studied separately from the electricity market a price-cap is a good way to protect consumers from soaring costs. The production quota for renewable electricity that must be met is politically determined and it is unlikely that politicians have full information of the market conditions. There is a substantial risk that the target can be set too high and if so it can prove to be very costly for consumers. This supports the arguments of a need for a price-cap as a protective mechanism, and such arguments shouldnât be dismissed too easily
Electricity from solar cells powers the comfort cooling in Staben
Staben is a building in Uppsala Science Park owned by Vasakronan. During 2013, Staben was renovated and a new air conditioning system was installed. The main components of the air conditioning system are three circulation pumps which require electricity. It is desired by Vasakronan to supply this electric power in a way that is environmentally friendly. Therefore, the possibilities of operating the cooling system of Staben using solar power have been examined in this study.
To determine an appropriate size of the solar-cell facility, simulations and calculations were performed. The simulations were based on factors such as outside temperature, insolation and the electric power consumption of Staben. In addition to the simulation, an analysis of insolation and outside temperature was performed to validate the correlation between those two factors. The results of the simulations were validated through calculations and use of PVGIS, a computer program specialized in calculating electric production of solar cells.
According to the simulations an appropriate size of the solar-cell facility to operate the cooling system would be 3 kW rated power. This way, no electric power is sold to the grid. The investment of a 3 kW solar-cell facility will cost approximately 70 000 SEK, which results in a pay-back time between 10 and 15 years.

In this project a simulator has been developed (in C++) with the purpose of illustrating how changes in environmental regulations, tax levels and other policy measures affect the composition of an energy system. The aim of the project was to investigate how energy companiesâ investment strategies are affected when changes in economic and environmental conditions occur. A standard scenario has been created based on current Swedish conditions, but the user can create new scenarios and set parameters freely.
The user is tasked with building power plants to supply the city/region with district heating and electricity during a pre-set number of years. When the simulation is finished
the result is graded in the following categories: economy, environment and quality.
To evaluate the simulator three scenarios were created (âearly 20th centuryâ, âreduced environmental controlâ and âfutureâ) in addition to the standard scenario and these were compared with each other by examining how a select group of power plants perform under the given conditions. In the tests cost of electricity (COE) and environmental
