Building with Drones: Accurate 3D Facade Reconstruction using MAVs
Automatic reconstruction of 3D models from images using multi-view
Structure-from-Motion methods has been one of the most fruitful outcomes of
computer vision. These advances combined with the growing popularity of Micro
Aerial Vehicles as an autonomous imaging platform, have made 3D vision tools
ubiquitous for large number of Architecture, Engineering and Construction
applications among audiences, mostly unskilled in computer vision. However, to
obtain high-resolution and accurate reconstructions from a large-scale object
using SfM, there are many critical constraints on the quality of image data,
which often become sources of inaccuracy as the current 3D reconstruction
pipelines do not facilitate the users to determine the fidelity of input data
during the image acquisition. In this paper, we present and advocate a
closed-loop interactive approach that performs incremental reconstruction in
real-time and gives users an online feedback about the quality parameters like
Ground Sampling Distance (GSD), image redundancy, etc on a surface mesh. We
also propose a novel multi-scale camera network design to prevent scene drift
caused by incremental map building, and release the first multi-scale image
sequence dataset as a benchmark. Further, we evaluate our system on real
outdoor scenes, and show that our interactive pipeline combined with a
multi-scale camera network approach provides compelling accuracy in multi-view

Calibration Wizard: A Guidance System for Camera Calibration Based on Modelling Geometric and Corner Uncertainty
It is well known that the accuracy of a calibration depends strongly on the
choice of camera poses from which images of a calibration object are acquired.
We present a system -- Calibration Wizard -- that interactively guides a user
towards taking optimal calibration images. For each new image to be taken, the
system computes, from all previously acquired images, the pose that leads to
the globally maximum reduction of expected uncertainty on intrinsic parameters
and then guides the user towards that pose. We also show how to incorporate
uncertainty in corner point position in a novel principled manner, for both,
calibration and computation of the next best pose. Synthetic and real-world
experiments are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of Calibration

HeadOn: Real-time Reenactment of Human Portrait Videos
We propose HeadOn, the first real-time source-to-target reenactment approach
for complete human portrait videos that enables transfer of torso and head
motion, face expression, and eye gaze. Given a short RGB-D video of the target
actor, we automatically construct a personalized geometry proxy that embeds a
parametric head, eye, and kinematic torso model. A novel real-time reenactment
algorithm employs this proxy to photo-realistically map the captured motion
from the source actor to the target actor. On top of the coarse geometric
proxy, we propose a video-based rendering technique that composites the
modified target portrait video via view- and pose-dependent texturing, and
creates photo-realistic imagery of the target actor under novel torso and head
poses, facial expressions, and gaze directions. To this end, we propose a
robust tracking of the face and torso of the source actor. We extensively
evaluate our approach and show significant improvements in enabling much

Enhanced visualisation of dance performance from automatically synchronised multimodal recordings
The Huawei/3DLife Grand Challenge Dataset provides multimodal recordings of Salsa dancing, consisting of audiovisual streams along with depth maps and inertial measurements. In this paper, we propose a system for augmented reality-based evaluations of Salsa dancer performances. An essential step for such a system is the automatic temporal synchronisation of the multiple modalities captured from different sensors, for which we propose efficient solutions. Furthermore, we contribute modules for the automatic analysis of dance performances and present an original software application, specifically designed for the evaluation scenario considered, which enables an enhanced dance visualisation experience, through the augmentation of the original media with the results of our automatic analyses
Enabling Depth-driven Visual Attention on the iCub Humanoid Robot: Instructions for Use and New Perspectives
The importance of depth perception in the interactions that humans have
within their nearby space is a well established fact. Consequently, it is also
well known that the possibility of exploiting good stereo information would
ease and, in many cases, enable, a large variety of attentional and interactive
behaviors on humanoid robotic platforms. However, the difficulty of computing
real-time and robust binocular disparity maps from moving stereo cameras often
prevents from relying on this kind of cue to visually guide robots' attention
and actions in real-world scenarios. The contribution of this paper is
two-fold: first, we show that the Efficient Large-scale Stereo Matching
algorithm (ELAS) by A. Geiger et al. 2010 for computation of the disparity map
is well suited to be used on a humanoid robotic platform as the iCub robot;
second, we show how, provided with a fast and reliable stereo system,
implementing relatively challenging visual behaviors in natural settings can
require much less effort. As a case of study we consider the common situation
where the robot is asked to focus the attention on one object close in the
scene, showing how a simple but effective disparity-based segmentation solves
the problem in this case. Indeed this example paves the way to a variety of
other similar applications
Pictures in Your Mind: Using Interactive Gesture-Controlled Reliefs to Explore Art
Tactile reliefs offer many benefits over the more classic raised line drawings or tactile diagrams, as depth, 3D shape, and surface textures are directly perceivable. Although often created for blind and visually impaired (BVI) people, a wider range of people may benefit from such multimodal material. However, some reliefs are still difficult to understand without proper guidance or accompanying verbal descriptions, hindering autonomous exploration.
In this work, we present a gesture-controlled interactive audio guide (IAG) based on recent low-cost depth cameras that can be operated directly with the hands on relief surfaces during tactile exploration. The interactively explorable, location-dependent verbal and captioned descriptions promise rapid tactile accessibility to 2.5D spatial information in a home or education setting, to online resources, or as a kiosk installation at public places.
We present a working prototype, discuss design decisions, and present the results of two evaluation studies: the first with 13 BVI test users and the second follow-up study with 14 test users across a wide range of people with differences and difficulties associated with perception, memory, cognition, and communication.
