    Protest Adjustments in the Valuation of Watershed Restoration Using Payment Card Data

    When using a willingness-to-pay (WTP) format in contingent valuation (CV) to value water-shed restoration, respondents may protest by questioning why they should pay to clean up a pollution problem that someone else created. Using a sample selection interval data model based on Bhat (1994) and Brox, Kumar, and Stollery (2003), we found that the decision to protest and WTP values were correlated. Protest sample selection bias resulted in a 300 percent overestimate of mean WTP per respondent.     TMB: Automatic Differentiation and Laplace Approximation

    TMB is an open source R package that enables quick implementation of complex nonlinear random effect (latent variable) models in a manner similar to the established AD Model Builder package (ADMB, admb-project.org). In addition, it offers easy access to parallel computations. The user defines the joint likelihood for the data and the random effects as a C++ template function, while all the other operations are done in R; e.g., reading in the data. The package evaluates and maximizes the Laplace approximation of the marginal likelihood where the random effects are automatically integrated out. This approximation, and its derivatives, are obtained using automatic differentiation (up to order three) of the joint likelihood. The computations are designed to be fast for problems with many random effects (~10^6) and parameters (~10^3). Computation times using ADMB and TMB are compared on a suite of examples ranging from simple models to large spatial models where the random effects are a Gaussian random field. Speedups ranging from 1.5 to about 100 are obtained with increasing gains for large problems. The package and examples are available at http://tmb-project.org

    The status of lightweight photovoltaic space array technology based on amorphous silicon solar cells

    Ultralight, flexible photovoltaic (PV) array of amorphous silicon (a-Si) was identified as a potential low cost power source for small satellites. A survey was conducted of the status of the a-Si PV array technology with respect to present and future performance, availability, cost, and risks. For existing, experimental array blankets made of commercial cell material, utilizing metal foil substrates, the Beginning of Life (BOL) performance at Air Mass Zero (AM0) and 35 C includes total power up to 200 W, power per area of 64 W/sq m and power per weight of 258 W/kg. Doubling of power per weight occurs when polyimide substrates are used. Estimated End of Life (EOL) power output after 10 years in a nominal low earth orbit would be 80 pct. of BOL, the degradation being due to largely light induced effects (-10 to -15 pct.) and in part (-5 pct.) to space radiation. Predictions for the year 1995 for flexible PV arrays, made on the basis of published results for rigid a-Si modules, indicate EOL power output per area and per weight of 105 W/sq m and 400 W/kg, respectively, while predictions for the late 1990s based on existing U.S. national PV program goals indicate EOL values of 157 W/sq m and 600 W/kg. Cost estimates by vendors for 200 W ultralight arrays in volume of over 1000 units range from 100/wattto100/watt to 125/watt. Identified risks include the lack of flexible, space compatible encapsulant, the lack of space qualification effort, recent partial or full acquisitions of US manufacturers of a-Si cells by foreign firms, and the absence of a national commitment for a long range development program toward developing of this important power source for space

    Participation of patients in decisions about treatment for cancer

    The primary aim of treatment for cancer is to improve the quality of life of patients by curing them or producing a long and worthwhile remission and ameliorating their worst symptoms. For many types of cancers, however, the most appropriate management is not always clear or based on the best evidence from well conducted randomised controlled trials. Clinicians may have more than one therapeutic option to offer patients and there are many calls for more involvement of patients in decision making about their treatment. Two fundamental issues should be determined when discussing treatment choices with patients—their own preferences about the amount and type of information that is needed and their actual rather than perceived desire for participation in decision making. A clear distinction needs to be made between a desire for information and a wish to assume responsibility for decision making. They are not one and the same thing. In one study of women with breast cancer, improvements in quality of life brought about by reduced anxiety and depression and better adjustment were primarily related to satisfaction with information they got, not merely involvement with decision making about the type of surgery.1 Many studies have shown that patients want much more information than their doctors believe they do.2 We also know that the ability of doctors to predict which patients want an active, shared, or passive role in decision making is very poor in palliative care and when active, potentially curative treatment is discussed. 3 4 Patients' preferences about choice of treatment are poorly understood and usually based on intuitive assumptions about their perceived intelligence, age, or quality of life. This problem is not confined to the United Kingdom, although the poor ratio of oncologists to patients does mean that good patient centred communication about choices available and their consequences is easily omitted in busy clinics. We await with interest more results from the study to understand prognoses and preferences for outcomes and risks of treatments from the United States.5 The choices of treatment put before patients should involve an adequate and objective appraisal of information, delivered in a patient centred manner backed by information booklets, audio and video tapes, and references to good websites such as those provided by CancerBACUP, the new National electronic Library for Health (NeLH), and the DIPEx database.6-8 Unfortunately even when evidence concerning improved survival or disease free intervals exists, data on quality of life are either missing, sketchy, or not well integrated into the analysis of overall benefit. There is some evidence that doctors do not collect accurate information about symptoms that affect quality of life; consequently patients may be agreeing to different treatments without being aware of their side effects.9 Further, doctors admit to having difficulty integrating the results from formal assessment of quality of life by questionnaires into clinical management, preferring to rely on their own clinical impressions about tolerability or impact of side effects.10 Arguably in some situations, including adjuvant therapy and palliation, these quality of life parameters might be the most important areas of information that a patient requires about likely benefit before consenting to treatment. Patients cannot participate in decision making to their desired extent unless they have the right types of information, given in ways optimal for their own level of understanding. There is a compelling need for training and other interventions to help communication between doctors and patients about the likely and preferred therapeutic goals and priorities of treatment. True patient participation, which may include an expressed preference by the patient to assume a more passive role about the type of information they require, and involvement in decision making is, for most, an unachievable goal unless we see some real improvements in the current system of healthcare delivery. Too many patients are being seen by too few doctors in over burdened clinics with inadequate support staff for meeting adequately the individual information needs of patients with cancer

    Light self-trapping in a large cloud of cold atoms

    We show that, for a near-resonant propagating beam, a large cloud of cold 87Rb atoms acts as a saturable Kerr medium and produces self-trapping of light. By side fluorescence imaging we monitor the transverse size of the beam and, depending on the sign of the laser detuning with respect to the atomic transition, we observe self-focusing or -defocusing, with the waist remaining stationary for an appropriate choice of parameters.     Rapidity Gap Survival in Enhanced Pomeron Scheme

    We apply the phenomenological Reggeon field theory framework to investigate rapidity gap survival (RGS) probability for diffractive dijet production in proton-proton collisions. In particular, we study in some detail rapidity gap suppression due to elastic rescatterings of intermediate partons in the underlying parton cascades, described by enhanced (Pomeron-Pomeron interaction) diagrams. We demonstrate that such contributions play a subdominant role, compared to the usual, so-called "eikonal", rapidity gap suppression due to elastic rescatterings of constituent partons of the colliding protons. On the other hand, the overall RGS factor proves to be sensitive to color fluctuations in the proton. Hence, experimental data on diffractive dijet production can be used to constrain the respective model approaches

    Land disposal of liquid effluent has benefits for the environment and is economically viable. Firstly, it can reduce nutrient levels from wastes polluting waterways. Secondly, the land application of effluent has been the most common treatment method because it can provide some necessary nutrients for plant growth. In New Zealand, land application of farm liquid effluent is a common method for disposing agricultural wastes. However, there is little comparative information about nutrient recycling in soils treated with effluent using surface application or subsurface injection. A field trial was conducted to examine the effect of tillage on the transformation of nutrient added through dairyshed effluent. Liquid effluent was either injected at 10 cm depth or broadcast on the surface at the Massey University long-term tillage experiments which include permanent pasture, and crops sown with no-till and conventional tillage as main treatments. In the first experiment, raw dairyshed liquid effluent was applied in August 1997 at the rate of 120 m 3 ha -1 (30 kg N ha -1 equivalent). This was considered as a low rate of application. In the second experiment starting in December 1997, the application was at the rate of 600 m 3 ha -1 (150 kg N ha -1 ). At this rate, although the hydraulic loading was considered as a high rate, the nutrient loading was considered optimum. Soil samples were collected before application, after one week, one month, and two months of application, at two depths: 0-10 cm and 10-20 cm and the samples were analysed for total N, total P, NO 3 - , NH 4 + , exchangeable K, available Olsen-P. Throughout the experiments, interactions between nutrient status, methods of application and different tillage practices were analysed. In the case of injection method, soil samples were taken both in the centre of the injected row and 10cm horizontally away from the centre of row. At the low rate of application (first experiment), soil nitrogen and phosphorus status did not change significantly for up to two months after application. Soil ammonium concentration reduced immediately after one week then reduced slowly. Nitrate concentration reduced slowly during the first month and significantly reduced during the second month after application. Exchangeable K and Olsen-P were not significantly different among treatments. At the high rate of application (second experiment), levels of soil nitrogen and phosphorus reduced slightly after two months of application. Nitrate concentration in the soil increased in the first month, but steadily reduced during the second month. On the other hand, ammonium concentration reduced gradually over a period of two months. Ammonium in injected plots was higher than that in the broadcast plots. Pasture retained more ammonium concentration compared with no-till and conventional tillage plots. Moreover, nitrate content in the injection plots was similar to that in the broadcast. This may be related to low rainfall during the experiment period that may have restricted the denitrification and reduced nitrate losses through leaching. Generally, there was higher content of exchangeable K and available P in soil which resulted from effluent application. Method of effluent application had no effects on K and P concentrations. Overall, there was an increase in nutrients in soil after application of liquid effluent, especially at the topsoil. There was a greater retention of nutrients in no-till soil than the conventionally tilled soil. Subsoil injection of effluent allowed higher level of nutrient retention than the surface broadcast method. This may be due to reduced nitrogen losses caused by volatilization of ammonium

    Curvature Inspired Cosmological Scenario

    Using modified gravity with non-linear terms of curvature, R2R^2 and R(r+2)R^{(r +2)} (with rr being the positive real number and RR being the scalar curvature), cosmological scenario,beginning at the Planck scale, is obtained. Here, a unified picture of cosmology is obtained from f(R)f(R)- gravity. In this scenario, universe begins with power-law inflation, followed by deceleration and acceleration in the late universe as well as possible collapse of the universe in future. It is different from f(R)f(R)- dark energy models with non-linear curvature terms assumed as dark energy. Here, dark energy terms are induced by linear as well as non-linear terms of curvature in Friedmann equation being derived from modified gravity.It is also interesting to see that, in this model, dark radiation and dark matter terms emerge spontaneously from the gravitational sector. It is found that dark energy, obtained here, behaves as quintessence in the early universe and phantom in the late universe. Moreover, analogous to brane-tension in brane-gravity inspired Friedmann equation, a tension term λ\lambda arises here being called as cosmic tension. It is found that, in the late universe, Friedmann equation (obtained here) contains a term ρ2/2λ- \rho^2/2\lambda (ρ\rho being the phantom energy density) analogous to a similar term in Friedmann equation with loop quantum effects, if λ>0\lambda > 0 and brane-gravity correction when λ<0.\lambda < 0.Comment: 19 Pages.
