The Pacific Asia Conference on Information Systems (PACIS), sponsored by the Association for Information Systems (AIS), is the premier annual information systems conference in the region. It aims to provide a high quality forum for researchers and practitioners to exchange research findings and practices on key issues in information systems and management. PACIS 2010 was held in Taipei, Taiwan in July 2010 and its theme is “Service Science in Information Systems Research.” In response to the transition of the global economy from the manufacturing to service-dominated economy, service science is emerging as a new and exciting paradigm. It represents a melding of information technology with an understanding of business processes and human behaviors for improving service operations, delivery, innovation, and ultimate values to customers. At the emerging stage of service science, it is essential for information systems (IS) researchers and practitioners to help shape what service science is by fusing IS research into inquiries of service science. Meanwhile, the service-centric view of servicescience may open up exciting opportunities and unique challenges to IS research. Hence, PACIS 2010 aims to facilitate the dialogues among IS professionals in academic and industries to exchange insights on issues related to service science in IS research as well as IS research to service science

Special Issue in Honor of Prof. Ting-Peng Liang’s Lifetime Contribution to the Service Innovation Discipline

    Get PDF
This special issue is dedicated to the reminiscences of TP for his significant contributions to the global IS discipline. This PAJAIS special issue solicits research submissions that are related to the Service Innovation discipline, one of TP’s key areas of research. Since service-oriented economy is evolving into experience economy, the research topics regarding how to design products, services, information systems, and mobile services to increase users’ experience value are becoming more and more important. From a service logic perspective, innovative service design focus on how they change customer thinking, participation, and capabilities to co-create value rather than new features in order to enhance user experience. Hence, this special issue focuses on issues related to service innovation, service quality & user experience (UX)

Our respectful old friend Professor Ting-Peng Liang (in short, TP) whom we loved suddenly passed away on May 20, 2021. But we cannot forget his smile and passion, and his inerasable footprints in PACIS, PAJAIS, and AIS Community. He was the founder of PACIS, founding editor-in-chief of PAJAIS, and past president of AIS to list just a few. He was the pioneer who received the first AIS Fellow and the first LEO Award from Asia Pacific. That is why the leaders of the information systems field organized the first ever special tribute session in PACIS 2021 in memory of TP (https://aisel.aisnet.org/pacis2021/253/

The State of the IS Academic Discipline in Pacific Asia: Methodological Learnings

    Get PDF
This is the last in a series of nine papers making up a special issue of Communications of the AIS (CAIS) titled The State of the Information Systems Academic Discipline in Pacific Asia (IS-in-PA). This paper reports on knowledge gleaned from the conduct of the sub-studies that comprise the IS-in PA project. In particular, there is analysis of the specific research artifacts developed for the individual sub-studies reported in this special edition. It is proposed that the methodological learnings derived from this project will be of benefit in the replication and extension of this project to other regions of the world. The paper addresses a key aim of the IS-in-PA, involving the development and application of a process of evidence collection and review transferable to other studies tracking diffusion of the IS discipline

Mediewistyczne ujęcie idei pokoju na przykładzie doktryny Marsyliusza z Padwy

The article is to point out the complexity of the idea of peace, which, once formed in the medieval era, has been the foundation of many contemporary institutions in the field of social life in a broad sense. The concept of peace, consisting of a number of issues, is central to the discussion herein. The full presentation of the idea of pax requires a reference to the social nature of man and to the relationship of the individual with the social group within which that individual lives. The issue of peace is also coupled with the idea of the common good. It is impossible to characterize the idea of bonum commune without a reference to the question of ordo and the essence of justice. The author proposes a thesis that the medievalist concept of pax combines political, legal, and moral reflection. It develops independently of the theory of wars. Particular attention should be paid to the idea of peace in the thought of Marsilius of Padua, who, drawing on Aristotle’s achievements and the ideas developed in the Middle Ages, devised an original concept of peace. Pełne przedstawienie idei pax wymaga odniesienia do społecznej natury człowieka oraz do relacji jednostki z grupą społeczną, w ramach której owa jednostka egzystuje.

The IS History Initiative: Looking Forward by Looking Back

After officially appointing an AIS historian and forming the AIS history task force at the beginning of 2013, the AIS supported a set of systematic efforts, named IS history initiative, to preserve and represent the IS field’s history. From the perspective of the first AIS historian, I provide some background for the IS history initiative. Then I outline a detailed strategic plan and current status of its implementation. Ultimately, the IS history initiative has three goals: (1) to collect, represent, and preserve the IS field’s history; (2) to interpret, write, disseminate, and review the IS field’s history; and (3) to discover/identify IS genealogy, roots, sources, and facets that deserve to be examined from a historical point of view. Correspondingly, the strategic plan contains three parts. Each part has several specific tasks, many of which were already completed at the time of this writing, and several are either in progress or are planned for future efforts. This paper overviews both current efforts and guiding future efforts related to preserving and representing IS history

IT-Enabled Dynamic Capability Creation: A Perspective on Exploitative vs. Explorative IT Utilization

    Get PDF
By focusing on today’s highly competitive and rapidly changing business environment, this study theorizes how organizations can create their dynamic capability from the utilization of information technology (IT) resources. The organizational exploitation and exploration perspective is adopted as the central theoretical basis of this study. A reflection on the exploitation and exploration of organizational IT management provides the possibility for theorizing multiple paths for IT-enabled dynamic capability creation. Under our theoretical development, the multiple paths involve different types of IT utilization capabilities that, in conjunction with organizational IT resources and other non-IT factors, lead to organizational dynamic capability. This study provides a theoretical basis for the role of IT in creating organizational dynamic capability. Specifically, it reveals the multiple types of interrelations between organizational IT resources and their utilization capabilities. This study serves as a basis for further empirical studies

Although business intelligence has been a research area in information systems for a long time, it becomes a bandwagon recently after combining with the ever-increasing online data and big data analytics. It allows managers to uncover useful knowledge from a large volume of dynamic data. I think one major reason for such a movement is that scholars can analyze real world behavioral data, rather than keep predicting behavioral intention. I am not saying intention is not useful, but it is interesting if we can go beyond intention to see more real behavior
