Green Computer and Video Games: An Introduction

    Get PDF
Whether framed as environmental communication, ’sustainable media’, ‘eco-media’, or ‘green popular culture’ environmental media and cultural studies constitutes an embryonic but rapidly developing body of research. The vibrant, multi-layered engagements of the eight essays collected here demonstrate not only that green gaming engages with all of the issues addressed in that research but also that games and game studies can expand the range of this incipient green media and cultural studies. This volume of Ecozon@is the first collection of essays to focus exclusively on the topic of ‘Green Computer and Video Games’. Working from these essays, we will demonstrate in Part I of this introduction how attributes specific to gaming might address and expand our understanding of environments and ecological relations; and, in Part II, how these essays might help develop green game studies itself

    Ecocritique as Transnational Commons

    Get PDF
The term 'transnational' can be read in two simultaneous dimensions: as ontological description of a primordially queer birthing (trans + natio) and as a trajectory of practice engaging with the historical actuality of borders. Ecocritique is centrally transnational in both senses, and ecomedia are privileged vehicles for conflictual practices of friction and suture acting along the line of alienation dividing and binding the two dimensions. This is a fundamental fracture between those who govern – some but only some humans – and those who in varying degrees or absolutely are ruled with limited access or none to the work of ruling. The paper proposes an ecocritical aesthetic politics operating through mediation and communication to produce a commons engaging excluded ecologies and technologies in the co-production of a new political space

Communicating Air: Alternative Pathways to Environmental Knowing through Computational Ecomedia

This dissertation, Communicating Air: Alternative Pathways to Environmental Knowing through Computational Ecomedia, is the culmination of an art practice-led investigation into ways in which the production of ecomedia may open alternative pathways to environmental knowing in a time of urgent climate crisis. This thesis traces the author’s artistic, personal and political development across the period of study and presents an extended argument for greater public engagement with weather and climate science, greater public and private support for long-term collaborations between media art and climate science, and increased public open access to global weather and climate monitoring and computationally modelled data
