    Effects of Turning Radius on Skid-Steered Wheeled Robot Power Consumption on Loose Soil

    This research highlights the need for a new power model for skid-steered wheeled robots driving on loose soil and lays the groundwork to develop such a model. State-of-the-art power modeling assumes hard ground; under typical assumptions this predicts constant power consumption over a range of small turning radii where the inner wheels are rotating backwards. However, experimental results performed both in the field and in a controlled laboratory sandbox show that, on sand, power is not in fact constant with respect to turning radius. Power peaks by 20% in a newly identified range of turns where the inner wheels rotate backwards but are being dragged forward. This range of turning radii spans from half the rover width to R', the radius at which the inner wheel is not commanded to turn. Data shows higher motor torque and wheel sinkage in this range. To progress toward predicting the required power for a skid-steered wheeled robot to maneuver on loose soil, a preliminary version of a two-dimensional slip-sinkage model is proposed, along with a model of the force required to bulldoze the pile of sand that accumulates next to the wheels as it they are skidding. However, this is shown to be a less important factor contributing to the increased power in small-radius turns than the added inner wheel torque induced by dragging these wheels through the piles of sand they excavate by counter-rotation (in the identified range of turns). Finally, since a direct application of a power model is to design energy-efficient paths, time dependency of power consumption is also examined.     Trajectory Tracking Control of Skid-Steering Mobile Robots with Slip and Skid Compensation using Sliding-Mode Control and Deep Learning

    Slip and skid compensation is crucial for mobile robots' navigation in outdoor environments and uneven terrains. In addition to the general slipping and skidding hazards for mobile robots in outdoor environments, slip and skid cause uncertainty for the trajectory tracking system and put the validity of stability analysis at risk. Despite research in this field, having a real-world feasible online slip and skid compensation is still challenging due to the complexity of wheel-terrain interaction in outdoor environments. This paper presents a novel trajectory tracking technique with real-world feasible online slip and skid compensation at the vehicle-level for skid-steering mobile robots in outdoor environments. The sliding mode control technique is utilized to design a robust trajectory tracking system to be able to consider the parameter uncertainty of this type of robot. Two previously developed deep learning models [1], [2] are integrated into the control feedback loop to estimate the robot's slipping and undesired skidding and feed the compensator in a real-time manner. The main advantages of the proposed technique are (1) considering two slip-related parameters rather than the conventional three slip parameters at the wheel-level, and (2) having an online real-world feasible slip and skid compensator to be able to reduce the tracking errors in unforeseen environments. The experimental results show that the proposed controller with the slip and skid compensator improves the performance of the trajectory tracking system by more than 27%

    This honors thesis presents the design, measurement, and analysis of an open-wheeled formula racecar suspension system. This racecar is the second iteration of Syracuse University’s Citrus Racing team student competition vehicle. The race car’s suspension system features several designs that enable geometric adjustability to impact the vehicles dynamic performance. The purpose of this research is to find an analytic approach to verifying the correlation between suspension design tunings and their effect on vehicle handling and road holding capacity. This was done by analyzing measured data obtained from a system of damper-mounted travel sensors as the vehicle drives through numerous realistic competition scenarios

    Control of Outdoor Robots at Higher Speeds on Challenging Terrain

    This thesis studies the motion control of wheeled mobile robots. Its focus is set on high speed control on challenging terrain. Additionally, it deals with the general problem of path following, as well as path planning and obstacle avoidance in difficult conditions. First, it proposes a heuristic longitudinal control for any wheeled mobile robot, and evaluates it on different kinematic configurations and in different conditions, including laboratory experiments and participation in a robotic competition. Being the focus of the thesis, high speed control on uneven terrain is thoroughly studied, and a novel control law is proposed, based on a new model representation of skid-steered vehicles, and comprising of nonlinear lateral and longitudinal control. The lateral control part is based on the Lyapunov theory, and the convergence of the vehicle to the geometric reference path is proven. The longitudinal control is designed for high speeds, taking actuator saturation and the vehicle properties into account. The complete solution is experimentally tested on two different vehicles on several different terrain types, reaching the speeds of ca. 6 m/s, and compared against two state-of-the-art algorithms. Furthermore, a novel path planning and obstacle avoidance system is proposed, together with an extension of the proposed high speed control, which builds up a navigation system capable of autonomous outdoor person following. This system is experimentally compared against two classical obstacle avoidance methods, and evaluated by following a human jogger in outdoor environments, with both static and dynamic obstacles. All the proposed methods, together with various different state-of-the-art control approaches, are unified into one framework. The proposed framework can be used to control any wheeled mobile robot, both indoors and outdoors, at low or high speeds, avoiding all the obstacles on the way.     Abstract: Skid steer tracked-based robots are popular due to their mechanical simplicity, zero-turning radius and greater traction. This architecture also has several advantages when employed by mobile platforms designed to climb and navigate ferrous surfaces, such as increased magnet density and low profile (center of gravity). However, creating a kinematic model for localization and motion control of this architecture is complicated due to the fact that tracks necessarily slip and do not roll. Such a model could be based on a heuristic representation, an experimentally-based characterization or a probabilistic form. This paper will extend an experimentallybased kinematic equivalence model to a climbing, track-based robot platform. The model will be adapted to account for the unique mobility characteristics associated with climbing. The accuracy of the model will be evaluated in several representative tasks.     Load allocation for optimal risk management in systems with incipient failure modes

    The development and implementation challenges associated with a proposed load allocation paradigm for fault risk assessment and system health management based on uncertain fault diagnostic and failure prognostic information are investigated. Health management actions are formulated in terms of a value associated with improving system reliability, and a cost associated with inducing deviations from a system's nominal performance. Three simulated case study systems are considered to highlight some of the fundamental challenges of formulating and solving an optimization on the space of available supervisory control actions in the described health management architecture. Repeated simulation studies on the three case-study systems are used to illustrate an empirical approach for tuning the conservatism of health management policies by way of adjusting risk assessment metrics in the proposed health management paradigm. The implementation and testing of a real-world prognostic system is presented to illustrate model development challenges not directly addressed in the analysis of the simulated case study systems. Real-time battery charge depletion prediction for a small unmanned aerial vehicle is considered in the real-world case study. An architecture for offline testing of prognostics and decision making algorithms is explained to facilitate empirical tuning of risk assessment metrics and health management policies, as was demonstrated for the three simulated case study systems.Ph.D

    A State Estimation Approach for a Skid-Steered Off-Road Mobile Robot

    This thesis presents a novel state estimation structure, a hybrid extended Kalman filter/Kalman filter developed for a skid-steered, six-wheeled, ARGO® all-terrain vehicle (ATV). The ARGO ATV is a teleoperated unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) custom fitted with an inertial measurement unit, wheel encoders and a GPS. In order to enable the ARGO for autonomous applications, the proposed hybrid EKF/KF state estimator strategy is combined with the vehicle’s sensor measurements to estimate key parameters for the vehicle. Field experiments in this thesis reveal that the proposed estimation structure is able to estimate the position, velocity, orientation, and longitudinal slip of the ARGO with a reasonable amount of accuracy. In addition, the proposed estimation structure is well-suited for online applications and can incorporate offline virtual GPS data to further improve the accuracy of the position estimates. The proposed estimation structure is also capable of estimating the longitudinal slip for every wheel of the ARGO, and the slip results align well with the motion estimate findings
