Towards an Economic Analysis of Routing in Payment Channel Networks
Payment channel networks are supposed to overcome technical scalability
limitations of blockchain infrastructure by employing a special overlay network
with fast payment confirmation and only sporadic settlement of netted
transactions on the blockchain. However, they introduce economic routing
constraints that limit decentralized scalability and are currently not well
understood. In this paper, we model the economic incentives for participants in
payment channel networks. We provide the first formal model of payment channel
economics and analyze how the cheapest path can be found. Additionally, our
simulation assesses the long-term evolution of a payment channel network. We
find that even for small routing fees, sometimes it is cheaper to settle the
transaction directly on the blockchain.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, SERIAL '17 Worksho
Atomic commitment in transactional DHTs
We investigate the problem of atomic commit in transactional database systems
built on top of Distributed Hash Tables. DHTs provide a decentralized way to
store and look up data. To solve the atomic commit problem we propose to
use an adaption of Paxos commit as a non-blocking algorithm. We exploit the
symmetric replication technique existing in the DKS DHT to determine which
nodes are necessary to execute the commit algorithm. By doing so we achieve a
lower number of communication rounds and a reduction of meta-data in contrast
to traditional Three-Phase-Commit protocols. We also show how the proposed
solution can cope with dynamism due to churn in DHTs. Our solution works
correctly relying only on an inaccurate failure detection of node failure which is
necessary for systems running over the Internet
Optimal Control of Applications for Hybrid Cloud Services
Development of cloud computing enables to move Big Data in the hybrid cloud
services. This requires research of all processing systems and data structures
for provide QoS. Due to the fact that there are many bottlenecks requires
monitoring and control system when performing a query. The models and
optimization criteria for the design of systems in a hybrid cloud
infrastructures are created. In this article suggested approaches and the
results of this build.Comment: 4 pages, Proc. conf. (not published). arXiv admin note: text overlap

ElasTraS: An Elastic Transactional Data Store in the Cloud
Over the last couple of years, "Cloud Computing" or "Elastic Computing" has
emerged as a compelling and successful paradigm for internet scale computing.
One of the major contributing factors to this success is the elasticity of
resources. In spite of the elasticity provided by the infrastructure and the
scalable design of the applications, the elephant (or the underlying database),
which drives most of these web-based applications, is not very elastic and
scalable, and hence limits scalability. In this paper, we propose ElasTraS
which addresses this issue of scalability and elasticity of the data store in a
cloud computing environment to leverage from the elastic nature of the
underlying infrastructure, while providing scalable transactional data access.
This paper aims at providing the design of a system in progress, highlighting
the major design choices, analyzing the different guarantees provided by the
system, and identifying several important challenges for the research community
striving for computing in the cloud.Comment: 5 Pages, In Proc. of USENIX HotCloud 200
