Time-of-Flight (ToF) cameras produce depth images (three-dimensional images) by measuring the time between the emission of infrared light and the reception of its reflection. A setup of multiple ToF cameras may be used to overcome their comparatively low resolution, increase the field of view, and reduce occlusion. However, the simultaneous operation of multiple ToF cameras introduces the possibility of interference resulting in erroneous depth measurements. The problem of interference is not only related to a collaborative multicamera setup but also to multiple ToF cameras operating independently. In this work, a new optical synchronization for ToF cameras is presented, requiring no additional hardware or infrastructure to utilize a time-division multiple access (TDMA) scheme to mitigate interference. It effectively enables a camera to sense the acquisition process of other ToF cameras and rapidly synchronizes its acquisition times to operate without interference. Instead of requiring cables to synchronize, only the existing hardware is utilized to enable an optical synchronization. To achieve this, the camera’s firmware is extended with the synchronization procedure. The optical synchronization has been conceptualized, implemented, and verified with an experimental setup deploying three ToF cameras. The measurements show the efficacy of the proposed optical synchronization. During the experiments, the frame rate was reduced by only about 1% due to the synchronization procedure

Harvesting ambient energy has enabled the development of energy-harvesting wireless sensor networks (EH-WSNs). However, in these networks, the uncertainty in harvesting rate due to dynamic weather conditions raises new challenges. Therefore, this drives the development of energy harvesting-aware solutions. Formerly, many MAC protocols have been developed for EH-WSNs, which offer various features based on available harvested energy to support different applications. Nevertheless, optimizing MAC performance by incorporating predicted future energy intake is relatively new in EH-WSNs. Therefore, this thesis presents a machine learning prediction based adaptive duty cycle medium access control (MAC) protocol for solar energy harvesting wireless sensor networks WSNs. The developed protocol incorporates information about the current and future harvested energy using mathematical formulations to improve network performance. By doing so, the proposed MAC protocol effectively addresses the primary goals of solar energy harvesting WSNs: ensuring long-term network sustainability and efficient utilization of harvested energy to enhance the application performance under dynamically changing energy harvesting conditions.Сакупљање амбијенталне енергије омогућило је развој бежичних сензорских мрежа (EH-WSN) за прикупљање енергије. Direct communication between vehicles and surrounding objects, called vehicle-to-everything (V2X), is ready for the market and promises to raise the level of safety and comfort while driving. To this aim, specific bands have been reserved in some countries worldwide and different wireless technologies have been developed; however, these are not interoperable. Recently, the issue of co-channel coexistence has been raised, leading the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to propose a number of solutions, called mitigation methods, for the coexistence of the IEEE 802.11p based ITS-G5 and the 3GPP fourth generation (4G) long term evolution (LTE)-V2X sidelink. In this work, several of the envisioned alternatives are investigated when adapted to the coexistence of the IEEE 802.11p with its enhancement IEEE 802.11bd and the latest 3GPP standards, i.e., the fifth generation (5G) new radio (NR)-V2X. The results, obtained through an open-source simulator that is shared with the research community for the evaluation of additional proposals, show that the methods called A and C, which require modifications to the standards, improve the transmission range of one or both systems without affecting the other, at least in low-density scenarios

Joint Design of Access and Backhaul in Densely Deployed MmWave Small Cells

With the rapid growth of mobile data traffic, the shortage of radio spectrum resource has become increasingly prominent. Millimeter wave (mmWave) small cells can be densely deployed in macro cells to improve network capacity and spectrum utilization. Such a network architecture is referred to as mmWave heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNets). Compared with the traditional wired backhaul, The integrated access and backhaul (IAB) architecture with wireless backhaul is more flexible and cost-effective for mmWave HetNets. However, the imbalance of throughput between the access and backhaul links will constrain the total system throughput. Consequently, it is necessary to jointly design of radio access and backhaul link. In this paper, we study the joint optimization of user association and backhaul resource allocation in mmWave HetNets, where different mmWave bands are adopted by the access and backhaul links. Considering the non-convex and combinatorial characteristics of the optimization problem and the dynamic nature of the mmWave link, we propose a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL) based scheme to maximize the long-term total link throughput of the network. The simulation results show that the scheme can not only adjust user association and backhaul resource allocation strategy according to the dynamics in the access link state, but also effectively improve the link throughput under different system configurations.Comment: 15 page

Enhancement of precise underwater object localization

Underwater communication applications extensively use localization services for object identification. Because of their significant impact on ocean exploration and monitoring, underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSN) are becoming increasingly popular, and acoustic communications have largely overtaken radio frequency (RF) broadcasts as the dominant means of communication. The two localization methods that are most frequently employed are those that estimate the angle of arrival (AOA) and the time difference of arrival (TDoA). The military and civilian sectors rely heavily on UWSN for object identification in the underwater environment. As a result, there is a need in UWSN for an accurate localization technique that accounts for dynamic nature of the underwater environment. Time and position data are the two key parameters to accurately define the position of an object. Moreover, due to climate change there is now a need to constrain energy consumption by UWSN to limit carbon emission to meet net-zero target by 2050. To meet these challenges, we have developed an efficient localization algorithm for determining an object position based on the angle and distance of arrival of beacon signals. We have considered the factors like sensor nodes not being in time sync with each other and the fact that the speed of sound varies in water. Our simulation results show that the proposed approach can achieve great localization accuracy while accounting for temporal synchronization inaccuracies. When compared to existing localization approaches, the mean estimation error (MEE) and energy consumption figures, the proposed approach outperforms them. The MEEs is shown to vary between 84.2154m and 93.8275m for four trials, 61.2256m and 92.7956m for eight trials, and 42.6584m and 119.5228m for twelve trials. Comparatively, the distance-based measurements show higher accuracy than the angle-based measurements

QoS-aware User Association and Transmission Scheduling for Millimeter-Wave Train-ground Communications

With the development of wireless communication, people have put forward higher requirements for train-ground communications in the high-speed railway (HSR) scenarios. With the help of mobile relays (MRs) installed on the roof of the train, the application of Millimeter-Wave (mm-wave) communication which has rich spectrum resources to the train-ground communication system can realize high data rate, so as to meet users' increasing demand for broad-band multimedia access. Also, full-duplex (FD) technology can theoretically double the spectral efficiency. In this paper, we formulate the user association and transmission scheduling problem in the mm-wave train-ground communication system with MR operating in the FD mode as a nonlinear programming problem. In order to maximize the system throughput and the number of users meeting quality of service (QoS) requirements, we propose an algorithm based on coalition game to solve the challenging NP-hard problem, and also prove the convergence and Nash-stable structure of the proposed algorithm. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed coalition game based algorithm can effectively improve the system throughput and meet the QoS requirements of as many users as possible, so that the communication system has a certain QoS awareness.Comment: 14 page
