    Colonization of a Neotropical Reservoir (Córdoba, Argentina) by Ceratium hirundinella (O. F. Müller) Bergh

    Blooms of Ceratium hirundinella (O. F. Müller) Bergh. have been detected in different water bodies in the Neotropical Region since 1990. The colonization began in southern lakes, and during the last decade the dinoflagellate arrived and bloomed in subtropical reservoirs. In this context the colonization of C. hirundinella and its population development have been analyzed from its first record in the Río Tercero Reservoir (February 1999 to February 2001). Phytoplankton and physicochemical samples were obtained from three sampling stations at the Reservoir, one in the outlet of the water cooling channel of the nuclear power plant, and one in the nearest tributary (Quillinzo River). Two blooms of C. hirundinella were detected during the warm seasons with temperatures higher than 18°C, and pH ranging between 8.5 and 8.9. Environmental conditions such as certain light intensity range and percentage of dissolved oxygen mentioned as favorable for Ceratium development were always recorded in Río Tercero Reservoir. Cysts were observed in spring and summer months. Another dinoflagellate (Peridinium gatunense Nygaard) bloomed in previous summer in this water body but its population density decreased during the invasive phase of colonization of C. hirundinella. Asplanchna girodi, became the dominant zooplankter after the first bloom of C. hirundinella. We believe that the presence of this dinoflagellate in the Neotropical Region could be a regional phenomenon associated with some dispersal mechanisms and favorable local conditions for its proliferation like those recorded in the Rio Tercero ReservoirFil: Mac Donagh, María Elicia.     Fishes of the Lagunas Encadenadas (Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina), a wetland of international importance

    The Lagunas Encadenadas form a large endorheic wetland. The system comprises a chain of five main lagoons (Alsina, Chochico, Del Monte, Del Venado, and Epecuen). During two recent collection trips, 13 species of fish were caught. From the collected material and available data in the literature the following points can be made: The fish fauna of this wetland comprises 18 species from 11 families and six orders. Four species (Cyprinus carpio, Hoplias malabaricus, Loricariichthys anus and Parapimelodus valenciennis) are new records for these water bodies. Fish species diversity decreases from east to west, ie from the most freshwater lagoon (Alsina, with 15 species) to the most saline (Epecuen, 1 species). A similar diversity pattern has been found in zooplankton species

    Feed efficiency in dairy cows is widely acknowledged as a highly desirable characteristic to improve because of its well-documented impact on production costs. Traditional measures of feed efficiency have used ratio traits, specifically energy conversion efficiency, but these have undesirable statistical properties. Alternative measures of feed efficiency are those based on the residuals from regression-type statistical models, the most common of which is residual energy intake (REI). Residual energy intake is defined as the difference between actual and predicted intake and is usually derived from least squares regression models. The general objective of this thesis was to quantify phenotypic and genetic (co)variances between the feed intake complex, performance, and fertility traits in lactating Holstein-Friesian dairy cows. A total of 8,199 feed intake records from 2,693 lactations on 1,412 grazing lactating Holstein-Friesian dairy cows from experimental farms were used. Several alternative efficiency definitions were developed, each with their own respective strengths and weaknesses. Exploitable genetic variation was demonstrated to exist for the range of alternative efficiency traits, and the magnitude of this variation was sufficiently large to justify consideration of the feed efficiency complex in future dairy breeding goals. The heritability estimates for the different efficiency traits estimated using repeatability models varied from 0.06 to 0.21. Variance components, however, differed across lactation when estimated using random regression models; for example, the heritability of REI varied from 0.04 (34 DIM) to 0.11 (280 DIM) across lactation. Phenotypic correlations among many traits including REI and energy balance (EB) differed not only by stage of lactation but also by cow parity. Moderate to strong genetic correlations existed between REI and EB across lactation (ranging from 0.45 to 0.90). Albeit associated with large standard errors, estimated genetic correlations between feed efficiency and reproductive performance were either neutral or favourable suggesting greater genetic merit for feed efficiency does not appear to be antagonistically genetically correlated with reproductive performance. Selection index calculations using the current economic weights in the Irish Economic Breeding Index, and genetic (co)variances estimated in this thesis, indicate that the inclusion of REI in the index with an economic weight of €0.078/UFL will generate animals with improved REI

    Abstraction’s ecologies : post-industrialization, waste and the commodity form in Prunella Clough’s paintings of the 1980s and 1990s

    This article’s aims are twofold: firstly, it argues that Prunella Clough’s engagement with consumer items in her paintings of the 1980s and 1990s constitute a sustained engagement with the fluctuating nature of the commodity form, moving beyond the established critical narrative whereby these works are understood as simply redeeming “everyday” materials. Secondly, in order to do this, it proposes new artistic frameworks for Clough’s work, moving away from her early association with Neo-Romanticism to foreground her relationship with Pop and Minimalism, and with Post-Conceptual painting.     A genome-wide association study for somatic cell score using the Illumina high-density bovine beadchip identifies several novel QTL potentially related to mastitis susceptibility

    peer-reviewedMastitis is an inflammation-driven disease of the bovine mammary gland that occurs in response to physical damage or infection and is one of the most costly production-related diseases in the dairy industry worldwide. We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify genetic loci associated with somatic cell score (SCS), an indicator trait of mammary gland inflammation. A total of 702 Holstein-Friesian bulls were genotyped for 777,962 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and associated with SCS phenotypes. The SCS phenotypes were expressed as daughter yield deviations (DYD) based on a large number of progeny performance records. A total of 138 SNPs on 15 different chromosomes reached genome-wide significance (corrected p-value ≤ 0.05) for association with SCS (after correction for multiple testing). We defined 28 distinct QTL regions and a number of candidate genes located in these QTL regions were identified. The most significant association (p-value = 1.70 × 10−7) was observed on chromosome 6. This QTL had no known genes annotated within it, however, the Ensembl Genome Browser predicted the presence of a small non-coding RNA (a Y RNA gene) in this genomic region. This Y RNA gene was 99% identical to human RNY4. Y RNAs are a rare type of non-coding RNA that were originally discovered due to their association with the autoimmune disease, systemic lupus erythematosus. Examining small-RNA sequencing (RNAseq) data being generated by us in multiple different mastitis-pathogen challenged cell-types has revealed that this Y RNA is expressed (but not differentially expressed) in these cells. Other QTL regions identified in this study also encoded strong candidate genes for mastitis susceptibility. A QTL region on chromosome 13, for example, was found to contain a cluster of β-defensin genes, a gene family with known roles in innate immunity.     A note on the design and testing of single teatcups for automatic milking systems

    peer-reviewedIn automatic milking units single independent teatcups or shell/liner combinations are required. The milking characteristics of three designs of single-teatcup milking units were compared with a conventional milking unit in a pipeline milking system. The combined weight of each single-teatcup shell and liner used in the single-teatcup units was 0.18 kg, 0.38 kg or 0.56 kg. The conventional milking cluster had a claw volume of 150 mL and a weight of 3.16 kg. The single sets of teatcups were applied manually and removed automatically when milk flow from the four teatcups reached 0.2 kg/min. The experiment involved a latin square design with four groups of Friesian cows (10 cows/group), four 2-day periods and four treatments. At a flow rate of 4 L/min during simulated milking the mean vacuum level at the teat-end (artificial teat) during the “bphase” of pulsation was 43.8 kPa with the conventional milking unit and 33 kPa for the three single-teatcup units. The corresponding mean and minimum teat-end vacuum in the “d-phase” were 38.46 kPa and 29.54 kPa, respectively, for the conventional system and 24.95 kPa and 17.59 kPa, respectively, for the single-teatcup configuration. The light teatcup (weight 0.18 kg) gave longer time to milk letdown, longer milking time and both lower peak and average milk flow than the conventional cluster
