Fourth order real space solver for the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation with singular Coulomb potential
We present a novel numerical method and algorithm for the solution of the 3D
axially symmetric time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation in cylindrical
coordinates, involving singular Coulomb potential terms besides a smooth
time-dependent potential. We use fourth order finite difference real space
discretization, with special formulae for the arising Neumann and Robin
boundary conditions along the symmetry axis. Our propagation algorithm is based
on merging the method of the split-operator approximation of the exponential
operator with the implicit equations of second order cylindrical 2D
Crank-Nicolson scheme. We call this method hybrid splitting scheme because it
inherits both the speed of the split step finite difference schemes and the
robustness of the full Crank-Nicolson scheme. Based on a thorough error
analysis, we verified both the fourth order accuracy of the spatial
discretization in the optimal spatial step size range, and the fourth order
scaling with the time step in the case of proper high order expressions of the
split-operator. We demonstrate the performance and high accuracy of our hybrid
splitting scheme by simulating optical tunneling from a hydrogen atom due to a
few-cycle laser pulse with linear polarization
Optimization of Ultrafast Strong-Field Phenomena
Tutkimusten tuloksina on löydetty menetelmiä femtosekuntilasersykäysten suunnittelua varten.
Väitöskirjan lopussa on yhteenveto löydöksistämme, joita käsitellään suhteessa muihin alan tuoreisiin tutkimuksiin. Attosecond science deals with monitoring and control of electron dynamics in their native, attosecond time scale. Ultrafast electron dynamics is the driving force behind chemical reactions, it determines the optical response of matter, and it is the cornerstone of multiple ultrafast nanoscale imaging techniques.
Attosecond phenomena are often driven by strong-field light-matter interaction. Femtosecond laser pulses with electric fields rivaling those of atomic binding forces drive complex nonlinear phenomena in atoms, molecules, and solid state. They include electron excitations, nonlinear frequency up-conversion known as high-order harmonic generation (HHG), and emission of ultra-energetic electrons via above-threshold ionization (ATI). These processes have important roles in ultrafast technologies. For example, HHG is used as a source for coherent X-ray pulses with durations down to attoseconds, ATI is used for building electron wave packets for self-interrogation spectroscopy of matter, and excited Rydberg-states of atoms are prime candidates for multi-qubit quantum computing.
Control of strong-field attosecond phenomena can be achieved by shaping the temporal profile of the driving femtosecond pulse in modern light-field synthesizers. This dissertation is a computational expedition to shaping the driving laser pulses for optimizing strong-field light-matter interaction in HHG, ATI, and Rydberg-state preparation in atoms.
We begin this dissertation with a brief reviewof relevant strong-field attosecond phenomena with an emphasis on their theoretical modeling. We continue with an overview of control and optimization of these phenomena both from an experimental and a computational point of view. Later, we describe in detail the computational models we have used. The corresponding software is provided in the online supplementary material.
Our optimization studies deliver experimentally feasible optimization/control schemes for shaping the driving femtosecond laser pulses to increase the maximum energy and signal strength of HHG and ATI in atomic gases. We also demonstrate how the optimized processes behind the optimized HHG and ATI can be understood with a semiclassical three-step model. The excitation of alkali metals to their Rydberg states is shown to be feasible with multicolor femtosecond fields, decreasing the excitation time by several orders of magnitude compared to traditional methods. On the downside, in its current form the proposed scheme lacks the finesse to populate only a single final state.
We also develop a new finite element simulation suite for studying attosecond phenomena in nanostructures. Nanostructures shape the spatial profile of the driving laser field, something existing simulation software cannot easily model. Our software suite is designed for simulating these systems efficiently, and it can incorporate the spatial inhomogeneity of the driving field with ease. We close this dissertation with a summary of our optimization studies and obtained results. They are discussed in the context of other recent work in the field, and we also reflect on possible improvements and directions for future work
Plasmonische Generation von Attosekundenpulsen und Attosekundenabbildung von Oberflächenplasmonen
Attosecond pulses are ultrashort radiation bursts produced via high
harmonic generation (HHG) during a highly nonlinear excitation process
driven by a near infrared (NIR) laser
pulse. Attosecond pulses can be used
to probe the electron dynamics in ultrafast processes via the attosecond
streaking technique, with a resolution on the
attosecond time scale.
In this thesis it is shown that both the generation of attosecond (AS) pulses
and the probing of ultrafast processes by means of AS pulses, can
be extended to cases in which the respective driving and streaking fields are produced by
surface plasmons excited on nanostructures at NIR wavelengths.
Surface plasmons are optical modes generated by collective oscillations of the surface
electrons in resonance with an external source.
In the first part of this thesis, the idea of high harmonic generation (HHG)
in the enhanced field of a surface plasmon is analyzed in detail by means of numerical simulations.
A NIR pulse is coupled
into a surface plasmon propagating in a hollow core tapered
waveguide filled with noble gas. The plasmon field intensity
increases for decreasing waveguide radius, such that at the apex
the field enhancement is sufficient for producing high harmonic radiation.
It is shown that with this setup it is possible to generate isolated AS pulses
with outstanding spatial and temporal structure, but with an intensity of orders of magnitude smaller than in standard gas harmonic
arrangements.
In the second part, an experimental technique for the imaging
of surface plasmonic excitations on nanostructured surfaces is proposed,
where AS pulses are used to probe the surface field by means of
photoionization. The concept constitutes an
extension of the attosecond streak camera
to ``Attosecond Photoscopy'', which allows
space- and time-resolved imaging of the plasmon dynamics during
the excitation process. It is numerically demonstrated that the relevant parameters of the
plasmonic resonance buildup phase can be determined with subfemtosecond precision.
Finally, the method used for the numerical solution of
the Maxwell's equations is discussed, with
particular attention to the problem of absorbing boundary conditions.
New insights into the mathematical formulation of the absorbing
boundary conditions for Maxwell's equations are provided.
Momentum distributions from bichromatic ionization of atoms and molecules
When a sufficiently strong laser field acts on an atom or a molecule, ionization can occur. Electrons released in this process are accelerated by the laser field and the distribution of their final momenta can be measured. As opposed to using linear or circular polarization to drive the ionization process, tailored fields provide additional degrees of freedom to create field shapes with special properties. The present thesis investigates the interaction of atoms and molecules with such fields through numerical calculation of photoelectron momentum distributions, and their application towards a time-resolved picture of strong-field ionization.
For a two-color scheme where a weak orthogonal second harmonic is used to probe the ionization process in a strong linearly polarized laser field by observing the modulation of the signal as a function of the delay between the two colors, we solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in three dimensions and find the time of ionization resolved by final photoelectron momentum. We demonstrate that the delay scan is sensitive to Coulomb focusing and reveals signatures of photoelectron holography.
While two-color schemes can be used to measure ionization times in linear polarization, the attoclock is used in circular polarization. There, the ionization time is inferred from the detection angle of the photoelectron. Because of Coulomb effects, a theoretical model is always required to determine the precise mapping. Contrary to models that are typically used, we obtain this mapping without relying on the notion of an electron trajectory. This is achieved by considering the stationary points of the Dyson integral representation of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. We find these stationary points using numerical wave function propagation in complex time and confirm that the maximum of the momentum distributions corresponds well to the time of peak field strength.
Using a counter-rotating bicircular laser field, the concept of the attoclock can be transferred to other types of polarization. For suitable field strength ratio, the electric field is approximately linearly polarized around the time of peak field strength while the shape of the vector potential is similar to the attoclock. First, we apply the trajectory-free theory to this field to find the most probable time of ionization. Second, we combine the bicircular field with the two-color scheme. This allows us to compare the ionization time measured in the two-color scheme with the one measured in the attoclock. We find that the orthogonal two-color scheme measures ionization time as if the Coulomb potential were not present. However, switching to parallel polarization, we obtain meaningful ionization times in accordance with the attoclock principle that ionization takes place most likely at the peak of the pulse. Applying the bicircular field to a polar molecule, we find that the momentum distribution shows a dependence on the orientation, but this does not imply an orientation dependence of the ionization time

On the rate of convergence of Schwarz waveform relaxation methods for the time-dependent Schrödinger equation
International audienceThis paper is dedicated to the analysis of the rate of convergence of the classical and quasi-optimal Schwarz waveform relaxation (SWR) method for solving the linear Schrödinger equation with space-dependent potential. The strategy is based on i) the rewriting of the SWR algorithm as a fixed point algorithm in frequency space, and ii) the explicit construction of contraction factors thanks to pseudo-differential calculus. Some numerical experiments illustrating the analysis are also provided
