Does not compute: why I'm proposing a moratorium on academics' use of the term "outputs"
The word "outputs" is now ubiquitous in UK academia, particularly in a REF context that requires authors to think of their publications in such terms. To Kirsten Bell this is jarring, with a term previously more commonly associated with the language of computing or economics, where outputs are measured and monetised, clearly not suitable to academia. It's ultimately ideas that academics trade in, a reality obscured by the concept of “outputs” and its connotations of mechanical production and expulsion. It’s time for a moratorium on the casual use of the term “outputs” amongst academics
Maxwell's Demon Does Not Compute
Must a Maxwell demon must fail to reverse the second law of thermodynamics? Standard attempts to show it must fail make use of notions of information and computation. None of these attempts have succeeded. Worse they have distracted both supporters and opponents of these attempts from a much simpler demonstration of the necessary failure of a Maxwell's demon that employs no notions of information or computation. It requires only Liouville's theorem and its quantum analog

Lattices, cohomology and models of six dimensional almost abelian solvmanifolds
We construct lattices on six dimensional not completely solvable almost
abelian Lie groups, for which the Mostow condition does not hold. For the
corresponding compact quotients, we compute the de Rham cohomology (which does
not agree in general with the Lie algebra one) and a minimal model. We show
that some of these solvmanifolds admit not invariant symplectic structures and
we study formality and Lefschetz properties.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1003.3774 by other author
Cosine Similarity Measure According to a Convex Cost Function
In this paper, we describe a new vector similarity measure associated with a
convex cost function. Given two vectors, we determine the surface normals of
the convex function at the vectors. The angle between the two surface normals
is the similarity measure. Convex cost function can be the negative entropy
function, total variation (TV) function and filtered variation function. The
convex cost function need not be differentiable everywhere. In general, we need
to compute the gradient of the cost function to compute the surface normals. If
the gradient does not exist at a given vector, it is possible to use the
subgradients and the normal producing the smallest angle between the two
vectors is used to compute the similarity measure
