Software quality assurance in Scrum the need for concrete guidance on SQA strategies in meeting user expectations
Includes abstract.Includes abstract. The purpose of this study is to identify and present the concerns of project stakeholders in relation to Software Quality Assurance (SQA) in a Scrum environment. Guided by the tenets of Classic Grounded Theory Methodology, this exploratory and inductive case study presents a broad range of SQA concepts related to the main concern of âMeeting User Expectationsâ. In trying to resolve the main concern, the Scrum project stakeholders alluded to lack of âConcrete Guidanceâ on SQA strategies, tools, and techniques in Scrum. The lack of concrete guidance in Scrum requires a development team to devise âInnovationsâ which may include âAdopting Practicesâ from other methodologies and carefully designing the âProcess Structureâ to accommodate the âAdopted Practicesâ, ensure âContinuous Improvementâ of the process, and provide an environment for âCollaborative Ownershipâ. In addition to the âNeed for Concrete Guidanceâ, the study reveals two other important concepts necessary for âMeeting User Expectationsâ: the âNeed for Solid User Representationâ and the âNeed for Dedicated Testingâ. While some Agile proponents claim that the Agile SQA practices are adequate on their own, the study reveals a number of challenges that impact on a teamâs ability to meet user expectations when there is no dedicated tester in a Scrum environment

Towards more effective testing of communications-critical large scale systems
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.A publication based on the research from this thesis has been published and can be cited as Nabulsi, MA and Hierons, RM (2014), A new test framework for communications-critical large scale systems, IEEE Software, In press. The published version can be accessed via the link below.None of todayâs large scale systems could function without the reliable availability of a varied range of network communications capabilities. Whilst software, hardware and communications technologies have been advancing throughout the past two decades, the methods commonly used by industry for testing large scale systems which incorporate critical communications interfaces have not kept pace. This thesis argues for the need for a specifically tailored framework to achieve effective testing of communications-critical large scale systems (CCLSS). The thesis initially discusses how generic test approaches are leading to inefficient and costly test activities in industry. The thesis then presents the form and features of an alternative CCLSS domain-specific test framework, develops its ideas further into a detailed and structured test approach for one of its layers, and then provides a detailed example of how this framework can be applied using a real-life case study. The thesis concludes with a qualitative as well a simulation-based evaluation of the frameworkâs benefits observed during the case study and an evaluation by expert external participants considering whether similar benefits can be realised if the framework is adopted for the testing of other comparable systems. Requirements data from a second CCLSS is included in the evaluation by external participants as a second smaller case study
Review of effectiveness and cost effectiveness: Increasing the uptake of HIV testing to reduce undiagnosed infection and prevent transmission among black African communities living in England
Globally, the HIV epidemic continues to have an impact on the lives of millions of
people. In 2008, there were an estimated 83,000 people living with HIV (both
diagnosed and undiagnosed), equivalent to 1.3 per 1000 population in the UK. In
that same year, 7,798 people were newly diagnosed with HIV. The global epidemic is
reflected in the UK; around 38% (2,790) of these newly diagnosed infections were
among black Africans who acquired their HIV through heterosexual contact. It is
thought that most (87%) of these infections among black Africans in the UK were
acquired abroad, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa Health Protection Agency 2009).
Late diagnosis of HIV is defined as diagnosis taking place after anti-retroviral
treatment would normally have begun, or when the person has an illness which
defines them as having AIDS. It is the most important factor associated with HIVrelated
disease and death in the UK and is a particular problem among black
Africans. In 2007, over 40% of new diagnoses among black Africans were classified
as âlateâ.
HIV testing can help reduce transmission of the virus. People who find out they have
HIV may change their sexual behaviour as a result of the diagnosis. A negative HIV
test provides an opportunity for preventive education and advice and may also lead
to changes in behaviour. Increasing the frequency of testing may result in earlier
detection of HIV following infection - when it is most virulent - providing greater
opportunity to reduce transmission
Knowledge Management Systems: The Role of Encouragement
Some organisations appear to be more successful than others at adopting and implementing Knowledge Management (KM) systems. In this paper, the authors investigate why this situation may occur through a case study analysis of two organisations that have implemented KM systems. In the first case, the authors consider why one supposedly technologically literate organisation experienced problems implementing what could be termed a âtried and testedâ technical solution. In the second, the authors consider a supposedly technologically illiterate organisationâs more positive experiences with a âstate of the artâ application. The focus of the analysis is on the interplay amongst the organisational factors that inhibited and facilitated the KM projects. Our case analysis suggests that a key factor is the levels of encouragement/discouragement for the use of the system that occur and their source: the technology, the organisation or both
Improving Early Literacy: Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of Effective Reading Programs
This study is a cost-effectiveness analysis of seven early literacy programs that have all been previously identified as effective at improving reading outcomes for students in Grades K-3. We use the ingredients method to collect cost data for each program and compare the cost-effectiveness of programs serving students in the same grade level
Remote self-testing for sexually transmitted infections, within online care pathways: how could this intervention deliver public health benefit? Formative research using chlamydia as an exemplar
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a public health challenge in England, despite free, confidential testing/treatment services. The eSTIÂČ Research Consortium is developing a diagnostic self-test for STIs, to be deployed within online care-pathways. Should this intervention lead to increased STI detection and prompt effective treatment, it could reduce transmission and morbidity. Through a scoping review and three studies I explored its potential to benefit public health, thus informing the interventionâs ongoing development. The review (2013) found diverse uses of internet/electronic communications in STI care-pathways, but little research was transferable to remote self-testing or management. Current internet-use for sexual health may predict use of the proposed intervention, so I estimated its prevalence, and identified associated factors, using British probability survey data (2010-12). Among sexually-experienced 16-44-year-olds (n=8926), internet-use for STI testing/treatment was rare (<0.5%), but available services were limited. 4.5% women and 4.6% men reported internet-use for information/support with their sex-lives, elevated among the better-educated and some STI risk-groups including young people. In qualitative interviews, 25 young people at risk of STI expressed enthusiasm for a (hypothetical) STI self-test within online care-pathways. Findings informed colleaguesâ development of eSTIÂČâs Online Chlamydia Pathway (OCP). For people requiring chlamydia treatment, this included: online automated medical assessment, a helpline, and community pharmacy treatment collection or facilitated clinic access. I undertook and thematically-analysed 40 qualitative interviews with OCP users, within pilot studies. Participants valued the rapid, convenient and discreet treatment access, increased control over their healthcare, and optional professional support by telephone, enabled by the OCP. Offline parts of the pathway (pharmacy/clinic attendance) risked compromising its perceived advantages, and require further development. Recommendations derived from an iteratively-developed understanding of this complex interventionâs use and appeal, can enhance its potential to enable STI detection and treatment, promptly, effectively and acceptably. Future evaluation must consider impacts on health inequalities
