Retransmission procedures to enhance link performance and higher downlink bandwidth requirements could question macrodiversity usage.     Temporal and spatial combining for 5G mmWave small cells

    This chapter proposes the combination of temporal processing through Rake combining based on direct sequence-spread spectrum (DS-SS), and multiple antenna beamforming or antenna spatial diversity as a possible physical layer access technique for fifth generation (5G) small cell base stations (SBS) operating in the millimetre wave (mmWave) frequencies. Unlike earlier works in the literature aimed at previous generation wireless, the use of the beamforming is presented as operating in the radio frequency (RF) domain, rather than the baseband domain, to minimise power expenditure as a more suitable method for 5G small cells. Some potential limitations associated with massive multiple input-multiple output (MIMO) for small cells are discussed relating to the likely limitation on available antennas and resultant beamwidth. Rather than relying, solely, on expensive and potentially power hungry massive MIMO (which in the case of a SBS for indoor use will be limited by a physically small form factor) the use of a limited number of antennas, complimented with Rake combining, or antenna diversity is given consideration for short distance indoor communications for both the SBS) and user equipment (UE). The proposal’s aim is twofold: to solve eroded path loss due to the effective antenna aperture reduction and to satisfy sensitivity to blockages and multipath dispersion in indoor, small coverage area base stations. Two candidate architectures are proposed. With higher data rates, more rigorous analysis of circuit power and its effect on energy efficiency (EE) is provided. A detailed investigation is provided into the likely design and signal processing requirements.     Free-space optical communication employing subcarrier modulation and spatial diversity in atmospheric turbulence channel

    An expression for the bit error rate of a multiple subcarrier intensity-modulated atmospheric optical communication system employing spatial diversity is derived. Spatial diversity is used to mitigate scintillation caused by atmospheric turbulence, which is assumed to obey lognormal distribution. Optimal but complex maximum ratio, equal gain combining (EGC) and relatively simple selection combining spatial diversity techniques in a clear atmosphere are considered. Each subcarrier is modulated using binary phase shift keying. Laser irradiance is subsequently modulated by a subcarrier signal, and a direct detection PIN receiver is employed (i.e. intensity modulation/direction detection). At a subcarrier level, coherent demodulation is used to extract the transmitted data/information. The performance of on–off-keying is also presented and compared with the subcarrier intensity modulation under the same atmospheric conditions

    Optimizing the Energy Efficiency of Short Term Ultra Reliable Communications in Vehicular Networks

    We evaluate the use of HARQ schemes in the context of vehicle to infrastructure communications considering ultra reliable communications in the short term from a channel capacity stand point. We show that it is not possible to meet strict latency requirements with very high reliability without some diversity strategy and propose a solution to determining an optimal limit on the maximum allowed number of retransmissions using Chase combining and simple HARQ to increase energy efficiency. Results show that using the proposed optimizations leads to spending 5 times less energy when compared to only one retransmission in the context of a benchmark test case for urban scenario. In addition, we present an approximation that relates most system parameters and can predict whether or not the link can be closed, which is valuable for system design
