A Generic Communications Module for Cooperative 3D Visualization and Modelling over the Internet: the Collaborative API
Cooperative three-dimensional visualization and modeling applications allow a distributed group of users to work together with a model they share. To implement this kind of applications the underlying communications system must provide reliable and ordered multicast of users interactions. Due to the high complexity that characterizes the models, network bandwidth requirements have limited their use to intranets or in a few cases to very high-speed Internet connections.
In this paper we present a communications module that solves this problem. The library exposed, which is called Collaborative API, supports the creation of very efficient cooperative 3D visualization and modeling applications by optimizing the use of the network resources.
The Collaborative API, implements a new communications architecture: the dynamic client/server. The communications module presented in this paper is illustrated by two examples of applications that use it to provide cooperative 3D visualization over the Internet
Exploiting P2P in the Creation of Game Worlds
Peer-to-peer networks are a promising platform for supporting entirely decentralized, distributed multi-user gaming; however, multi-player games typically require highly predictable performance from the underlying network. This is at odds with the inherently unreliable nature of peer-to-peer environments. Existing approaches to providing peer-to-peer support for multi-player gaming focus on compensating for the unpredictability of the underlying network. We propose that rather than trying to compensate for these factors, they can be exploited together with information about the peer-to-peer network in order to address the problem of maintaining a novel gaming experience in the absence of a central authority. In order to explore our proposition, we model the measurable properties of P2P networks within a distributed multi-player game â NetWorld. We do this in such a way that the heterogeneous and unpredictable nature of the peer-to-peer environment becomes a positive part of the playerâs experience
Mapping cyberspace: visualising, analysing and exploring virtual worlds
In the past years, with the development of computer networks such as the Internet
and world wide web (WWW), cyberspace has been increasingly studied by
researchers in various disciplines such as computer sciences, sociology, geography,
and cartography as well. Cyberspace is mainly rooted in two computer technologies:
network and virtual reality. Cybermaps, as special maps for cyberspace, have been
used as a tool for understanding various aspects of cyberspace. As recognised,
cyberspace as a virtual space can be distinguished from the earth we live on in many
ways. Because of these distinctions, mapping it implies a big challenge for
cartographers with their long tradition of mapping things in clear ways. This paper,
by comparing it to traditional maps, addresses various cybermap issues such as
visualising, analysing and exploring cyberspace from different aspects
Intercultural New Media Studies: The Next Frontier in intercultural Communication
New media (ICT\u27s) are transforming communication across cultures. Despite this revolution in cross cultural contact, communication researchers have largely ignored the impact of new media on intercultural communication. This groundbreaking article defines the parameters of a new field of inquiry called Intercultural New Media Studies (INMS), which explores the intersection between ICT\u27s and intercultural communication. Composed of two research areasâ(1) new media and intercultural communication theory and (2) culture and new mediaâINMS investigates new digital theories of intercultural contact as well as refines and expands twentieth-century intercultural communication theories, examining their salience in a digital world. INMS promises to increase our understanding of intercultural communication in a new media age and is the next frontier in intercultural communication
Towards a Scalable Dynamic Spatial Database System
With the rise of GPS-enabled smartphones and other similar mobile devices,
massive amounts of location data are available. However, no scalable solutions
for soft real-time spatial queries on large sets of moving objects have yet
emerged. In this paper we explore and measure the limits of actual algorithms
and implementations regarding different application scenarios. And finally we

A Pedagogy for Original Synners
Part of the Volume on Digital Young, Innovation, and the UnexpectedThis essay begins by speculating about the learning environment of the class of 2020. It takes place entirely in a virtual world, populated by simulated avatars, managed through the pedagogy of gaming. Based on this projected version of a future-now-in-formation, the authors consider the implications of the current paradigm shift that is happening at the edges of institutions of higher education. From the development of programs in multimedia literacy to the focus on the creation of hybrid learning spaces (that combine the use of virtual worlds, social networking applications, and classroom activities), the scene of learning as well as the subjects of education are changing. The figure of the Original Synner is a projection of the student-of-the-future whose foundational literacy is grounded in their ability to synthesize information from multiple information streams
Peripatetic electronic teachers in higher education
This paper explores the idea of information and communications technology providing a medium enabling higher education teachers to act as freelance agents. The notion of a âPeripatetic Electronic Teacherâ (PET) is introduced to encapsulate this idea. PETs would exist as multiple telepresences (pedagogical, professional, managerial and commercial) in PETâworlds; global networked environments which support advanced multimedia features. The central defining rationale of a pedagogical presence is described in detail and some implications for the adoption of the PETâworld paradigm are discussed.
