Implementing and Evaluating Security in O-RAN: Interfaces, Intelligence, and Platforms

The Open Radio Access Network (RAN) is a networking paradigm that builds on top of cloud-based, multi-vendor, open and intelligent architectures to shape the next generation of cellular networks for 5G and beyond. While this new paradigm comes with many advantages in terms of observatibility and reconfigurability of the network, it inevitably expands the threat surface of cellular systems and can potentially expose its components to several cyber attacks, thus making securing O-RAN networks a necessity. In this paper, we explore the security aspects of O-RAN systems by focusing on the specifications and architectures proposed by the O-RAN Alliance. We address the problem of securing O-RAN systems with an holistic perspective, including considerations on the open interfaces used to interconnect the different O-RAN components, on the overall platform, and on the intelligence used to monitor and control the network. For each focus area we identify threats, discuss relevant solutions to address these issues, and demonstrate experimentally how such solutions can effectively defend O-RAN systems against selected cyber attacks. This article is the first work in approaching the security aspect of O-RAN holistically and with experimental evidence obtained on a state-of-the-art programmable O-RAN platform, thus providing unique guideline for researchers in the field.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, submitted to IEEE Network Magazin

Physical-activity oriented community fundraising has experienced an exponential growth in popularity over the past 15 years. The aim of this study was to explore the value of effortful fundraising experiences, from the point of view of participants, and explore the impact that these experiences have on people’s lives. This study used an IPA approach to interview 23 individuals, recognising the role of participants as proxy (nonprofessional) fundraisers for charitable organisations, and the unique organisation donor dynamic that this creates. It also bought together relevant psychological theory related to physical activity fundraising experiences (through a narrative literature review) and used primary interview data to substantiate these. Effortful fundraising experiences are examined in detail to understand their significance to participants, and how such experiences influence their connection with a charity or cause. This was done with an idiographic focus at first, before examining convergences and divergences across the sample. This study found that effortful fundraising experiences can have a profound positive impact upon community fundraisers in both the short and the long term. Additionally, it found that these experiences can be opportunities for charitable organisations to create lasting meaningful relationships with participants, and foster mutually beneficial lifetime relationships with them. Further research is needed to test specific psychological theory in this context, including self-esteem theory, self determination theory, and the martyrdom effect (among others)

    Interference mitigation in LiFi networks

Due to the increasing demand for wireless data, the radio frequency (RF) spectrum has become a very limited resource. Alternative approaches are under investigation to support the future growth in data traffic and next-generation high-speed wireless communication systems. Techniques such as massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), millimeter wave (mmWave) communications and light-fidelity (LiFi) are being explored. Among these technologies, LiFi is a novel bi-directional, high-speed and fully networked wireless communication technology. However, inter-cell interference (ICI) can significantly restrict the system performance of LiFi attocell networks. This thesis focuses on interference mitigation in LiFi attocell networks. The angle diversity receiver (ADR) is one solution to address the issue of ICI as well as frequency reuse in LiFi attocell networks. With the property of high concentration gain and narrow field of view (FOV), the ADR is very beneficial for interference mitigation. However, the optimum structure of the ADR has not been investigated. This motivates us to propose the optimum structures for the ADRs in order to fully exploit the performance gain. The impact of random device orientation and diffuse link signal propagation are taken into consideration. The performance comparison between the select best combining (SBC) and maximum ratio combining (MRC) is carried out under different noise levels. In addition, the double source (DS) system, where each LiFi access point (AP) consists of two sources transmitting the same information signals but with opposite polarity, is proven to outperform the single source (SS) system under certain conditions. Then, to overcome issues around ICI, random device orientation and link blockage, hybrid LiFi/WiFi networks (HLWNs) are considered. In this thesis, dynamic load balancing (LB) considering handover in HLWNs is studied. The orientation-based random waypoint (ORWP) mobility model is considered to provide a more realistic framework to evaluate the performance of HLWNs. Based on the low-pass filtering effect of the LiFi channel, we firstly propose an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA)-based resource allocation (RA) method in LiFi systems. Also, an enhanced evolutionary game theory (EGT)-based LB scheme with handover in HLWNs is proposed. Finally, due to the characteristic of high directivity and narrow beams, a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) array transmission system has been proposed to mitigate ICI. In order to support mobile users, two beam activation methods are proposed. The beam activation based on the corner-cube retroreflector (CCR) can achieve low power consumption and almost-zero delay, allowing real-time beam activation for high-speed users. The mechanism based on the omnidirectional transmitter (ODTx) is suitable for low-speed users and very robust to random orientation

Digital asset management via distributed ledgers

Distributed ledgers rose to prominence with the advent of Bitcoin, the first provably secure protocol to solve consensus in an open-participation setting. Following, active research and engineering efforts have proposed a multitude of applications and alternative designs, the most prominent being Proof-of-Stake (PoS). This thesis expands the scope of secure and efficient asset management over a distributed ledger around three axes: i) cryptography; ii) distributed systems; iii) game theory and economics. First, we analyze the security of various wallets. We start with a formal model of hardware wallets, followed by an analytical framework of PoS wallets, each outlining the unique properties of Proof-of-Work (PoW) and PoS respectively. The latter also provides a rigorous design to form collaborative participating entities, called stake pools. We then propose Conclave, a stake pool design which enables a group of parties to participate in a PoS system in a collaborative manner, without a central operator. Second, we focus on efficiency. Decentralized systems are aimed at thousands of users across the globe, so a rigorous design for minimizing memory and storage consumption is a prerequisite for scalability. To that end, we frame ledger maintenance as an optimization problem and design a multi-tier framework for designing wallets which ensure that updates increase the ledger’s global state only to a minimal extent, while preserving the security guarantees outlined in the security analysis. Third, we explore incentive-compatibility and analyze blockchain systems from a micro and a macroeconomic perspective. We enrich our cryptographic and systems' results by analyzing the incentives of collective pools and designing a state efficient Bitcoin fee function. We then analyze the Nash dynamics of distributed ledgers, introducing a formal model that evaluates whether rational, utility-maximizing participants are disincentivized from exhibiting undesirable infractions, and highlighting the differences between PoW and PoS-based ledgers, both in a standalone setting and under external parameters, like market price fluctuations. We conclude by introducing a macroeconomic principle, cryptocurrency egalitarianism, and then describing two mechanisms for enabling taxation in blockchain-based currency systems

Upgrading Urban Services Through BPL: Practical Applications for Smart Cities

    Get PDF
Current initiatives related to smart cities in LATAM reveal an increasing interest in the improvement of cities and the wellbeing of their citizens. In addition, specific working groups have been created for this purpose. In this sense, the communication technologies set the basis for gathering, transporting, and managing the large amount of data generated in cities to provide a wide range of services. Within the many alternatives available, BPL positions as a promising technology, since smart cities can greatly benefit of its higher data rates and low latency. In addition, since the medium is already deployed and most of the assets and sensors are connected to the same medium, the cost of the communication systems will be reduced in price and simplicity. The work presents four practical applications: smart buildings, urban lighting, energy assets management and broadband access, in which the possibilities and advantages of BPL are further addressed. Finally, some conclusions and key aspects relating BPL to the success of smart cities are identified.Eusko Jaurlaritza IT-1234-19, KK-202

Distributed cooperative kinematic control of multiple robotic manipulators with improved communication efficiency

An efficiency-oriented solution is theoretically a preferred choice to support the efficient operation of a system. Although some studies on the multi-manipulator system share the load of the control center by transforming the network topology, the whole system often suffers an increased communication burden. In this article, a multi-manipulator cooperative control scheme with improved communication efficiency is proposed to allocate limited communication resources reasonably. The entire control process is formulated from the perspective of game theory and finally evolved into a problem of finding a Nash equilibrium with time-varying parameters. Then, a neural network solver is designed to update the strategies of manipulators. Theoretical analysis supports the convergence and robustness of the solver. In addition, Zeno behavior does not occur under the domination of the control strategy. Finally, simulative results reveal that the proposed control strategy has advantages over traditional periodic control in communication
