    Distributed Rate Allocation in Inter-Session Network Coding

    In this work, we propose a distributed rate allocation algorithm that minimizes the average decoding delay for multimedia clients in inter-session network coding systems. We consider a scenario where the users are organized in a mesh network and each user requests the content of one of the available sources. We propose a novel distributed algorithm where network users determine the coding operations and the packet rates to be requested from the parent nodes, such that the decoding delay is minimized for all clients. A rate allocation problem is solved by every user, which seeks the rates that minimize the average decoding delay for its children and for itself. Since this optimization problem is a priori non-convex, we introduce the concept of equivalent packet flows, which permits to estimate the expected number of packets that every user needs to collect for decoding. We then decompose our original rate allocation problem into a set of convex subproblems, which are eventually combined to obtain an effective approximate solution to the delay minimization problem. The results demonstrate that the proposed scheme eliminates the bottlenecks and reduces the decoding delay experienced by users with limited bandwidth resources. We validate the performance of our distributed rate allocation algorithm in different video streaming scenarios using the NS-3 network simulator. We show that our system is able to take benefit of inter-session network coding for simultaneous delivery of video sessions in networks with path diversity

    Dynamic algorithms for multicast with intra-session network coding

    The problem of multiple multicast sessions with intra-session network coding in time-varying networks is considered. The network-layer capacity region of input rates that can be stably supported is established. Dynamic algorithms for multicast routing, network coding, power allocation, session scheduling, and rate allocation across correlated sources, which achieve stability for rates within the capacity region, are presented. This work builds on the back-pressure approach introduced by Tassiulas et al., extending it to network coding and correlated sources. In the proposed algorithms, decisions on routing, network coding, and scheduling between different sessions at a node are made locally at each node based on virtual queues for different sinks. For correlated sources, the sinks locally determine and control transmission rates across the sources. The proposed approach yields a completely distributed algorithm for wired networks. In the wireless case, power control among different transmitters is centralized while routing, network coding, and scheduling between different sessions at a given node are distributed

    Distributed Algorithms for Spectrum Allocation, Power Control, Routing, and Congestion Control in Wireless Networks

    We develop distributed algorithms to allocate resources in multi-hop wireless networks with the aim of minimizing total cost. In order to observe the fundamental duplexing constraint that co-located transmitters and receivers cannot operate simultaneously on the same frequency band, we first devise a spectrum allocation scheme that divides the whole spectrum into multiple sub-bands and activates conflict-free links on each sub-band. We show that the minimum number of required sub-bands grows asymptotically at a logarithmic rate with the chromatic number of network connectivity graph. A simple distributed and asynchronous algorithm is developed to feasibly activate links on the available sub-bands. Given a feasible spectrum allocation, we then design node-based distributed algorithms for optimally controlling the transmission powers on active links for each sub-band, jointly with traffic routes and user input rates in response to channel states and traffic demands.     Decentralized Constraint Satisfaction

    We show that several important resource allocation problems in wireless networks fit within the common framework of Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs). Inspired by the requirements of these applications, where variables are located at distinct network devices that may not be able to communicate but may interfere, we define natural criteria that a CSP solver must possess in order to be practical. We term these algorithms decentralized CSP solvers. The best known CSP solvers were designed for centralized problems and do not meet these criteria. We introduce a stochastic decentralized CSP solver and prove that it will find a solution in almost surely finite time, should one exist, also showing it has many practically desirable properties. We benchmark the algorithm's performance on a well-studied class of CSPs, random k-SAT, illustrating that the time the algorithm takes to find a satisfying assignment is competitive with stochastic centralized solvers on problems with order a thousand variables despite its decentralized nature. We demonstrate the solver's practical utility for the problems that motivated its introduction by using it to find a non-interfering channel allocation for a network formed from data from downtown Manhattan

    Inter-session Network Coding for Transmitting Multiple Layered Streams over Single-hop Wireless Networks

    This paper studies the problem of transmitting multiple independent layered video streams over single-hop wireless networks using network coding (NC). We combine feedback-free random linear NC (RLNC) with unequal error protection (UEP) and our goal is to investigate the benefits of coding across streams, i.e. inter session NC. To this end, we present a transmission scheme that in addition to mixing packets of different layers of each stream (intra-session NC), mixes packets of different streams as well. Then, we propose the analytical formulation of the layer decoding probabilities for each user and utilize it to define a theoretical performance metric. Assessing this performance metric under various scenarios, it is observed that inter-session NC improves the trade-off among the performances of users. Furthermore, the analytical results show that the throughput gain of inter-session NC over intra-session NC increases with the number of independent streams and also by increasing packet error rate, but degrades as network becomes more heterogeneous.Comment: Accepted to be presented at 2014 IEEE Information Theory Workshop (ITW), 5 pages, 4 figure

    vSkyConf: Cloud-assisted Multi-party Mobile Video Conferencing

    As an important application in the busy world today, mobile video conferencing facilitates virtual face-to-face communication with friends, families and colleagues, via their mobile devices on the move. However, how to provision high-quality, multi-party video conferencing experiences over mobile devices is still an open challenge. The fundamental reason behind is the lack of computation and communication capacities on the mobile devices, to scale to large conferencing sessions. In this paper, we present vSkyConf, a cloud-assisted mobile video conferencing system to fundamentally improve the quality and scale of multi-party mobile video conferencing. By novelly employing a surrogate virtual machine in the cloud for each mobile user, we allow fully scalable communication among the conference participants via their surrogates, rather than directly. The surrogates exchange conferencing streams among each other, transcode the streams to the most appropriate bit rates, and buffer the streams for the most efficient delivery to the mobile recipients. A fully decentralized, optimal algorithm is designed to decide the best paths of streams and the most suitable surrogates for video transcoding along the paths, such that the limited bandwidth is fully utilized to deliver streams of the highest possible quality to the mobile recipients. We also carefully tailor a buffering mechanism on each surrogate to cooperate with optimal stream distribution. We have implemented vSkyConf based on Amazon EC2 and verified the excellent performance of our design, as compared to the widely adopted unicast solutions.Comment: 10 page
