    A service oriented architecture for engineering design

    Decision making in engineering design can be effectively addressed by using genetic algorithms to solve multi-objective problems. These multi-objective genetic algorithms (MOGAs) are well suited to implementation in a Service Oriented Architecture. Often the evaluation process of the MOGA is compute-intensive due to the use of a complex computer model to represent the real-world system. The emerging paradigm of Grid Computing offers a potential solution to the compute-intensive nature of this objective function evaluation, by allowing access to large amounts of compute resources in a distributed manner.     Parallelizing multi-objective evolutionary algorithms: cone separation

    Evolutionary multi-objective optimization (EMO) may be computationally quite demanding, because instead of searching for a single optimum, one generally wishes to find the whole front of Pareto-optimal solutions. For that reason, parallelizing EMO is an important issue. Since we are looking for a number of Pareto-optimal solutions with different tradeoffs between the objectives, it seems natural to assign different parts of the search space to different processors. We propose the idea of cone separation which is used to divide up the search space by adding explicit constraints for each process. We show that the approach is more efficient than simple parallelization schemes, and that it also works on problems with a non-convex Pareto-optimal front

    New and very ecient parallel algorithm for the Fast Non-dominated Sorting of Pareto fronts is proposed. By decreasing its computational complexity, the application of the proposed method allows us to increase the speedup of the best up to now Fast and Elitist Multi-objective Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) more than two orders of magnitudes.     A Distributed Pool Architecture for Genetic Algorithms

    The genetic algorithm paradigm is a well-known heuristic for solving many problems in science and engineering in which candidate solutions, or “individuals”, are manipulated in ways analogous to biological evolution, to produce new solutions until one with the desired quality is found. As problem sizes increase, a natural question is how to exploit advances in distributed and parallel computing to speed up the execution of genetic algorithms. This thesis proposes a new distributed architecture for genetic algorithms, based on distributed storage of the individuals in a persistent pool. Processors extract individuals from the pool in order to perform the computations and then insert the resulting individuals back into the pool. Unlike previously proposed approaches, the new approach is tailored for distributed systems in which processors are loosely coupled, failure-prone and can run at different speeds. Proof-of-concept simulation results are presented for four benchmark functions and for a real-world Product Lifecycle Design problem. We have experimented with both the crash failure model and the Byzantine failure model. The results indicate that the approach can deliver improved performance due to the distribution and tolerates a large fraction of processor failures subject to both models

    Evolutionary approaches to optimisation in rough machining

    This thesis concerns the use of Evolutionary Computation to optimise the sequence and selection of tools and machining parameters in rough milling applications. These processes are not automated in current Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software and this work, undertaken in collaboration with an industrial partner, aims to address this. Related research has mainly approached tool sequence optimisation using only a single tool type, and machining parameter optimisation of a single-tool sequence. In a real world industrial setting, tools with different geometrical profiles are commonly used in combination on rough machining tasks in order to produce components with complex sculptured surfaces. This work introduces a new representation scheme and search operators to support the use of the three most commonly used tool types: end mill, ball nose and toroidal. Using these operators, single-objective metaheuristic algorithms are shown to find near-optimal solutions, while surveying only a small number of tool sequences. For the first time, a multi-objective approach is taken to tool sequence optimisation. The process of ‘multi objectivisation’ is shown to offer two benefits: escaping local optima on deceptive multimodal search spaces and providing a selection of tool sequence alternatives to a machinist. The multi-objective approach is also used to produce a varied set of near-Pareto optimal solutions, offering different trade-offs between total machining time and total tooling costs, simultaneously optimising tool sequences and the cutting speeds of individual tools. A challenge for using computationally expensive CAM software, important for real world machining, is the time cost of evaluations. An asynchronous parallel evolutionary optimisation system is presented that can provide a significant speed up, even in the presence of heterogeneous evaluation times produced by variable length tool sequences. This system uses a distributed network of processors that could be easily and inexpensively implemented on existing commercial hardware, and accessible to even small workshops
