    A nonlinear vehicle-structure interaction methodology with wheel-rail detachment and reattachment

    . A vehicle-structure interaction methodology with a nonlinear contact formulation based on contact and target elements has been developed. To solve the dynamic equations of motion, an incremental formulation has been used due to the nonlinear nature of the contact mechanics, while a procedure based on the Lagrange multiplier method imposes the contact constraint equations when contact occurs. The system of nonlinear equations is solved by an efficient block factorization solver that reorders the system matrix and isolates the nonlinear terms that belong to the contact elements or to other nonlinear elements that may be incorporated in the model. Such procedure avoids multiple unnecessary factorizations of the linear terms during each Newton iteration, making the formulation efficient and computationally attractive. A numerical example has been carried out to validate the accuracy and efficiency of the present methodology. The obtained results have shown a good agreement with the results obtained with the commercial finite element software ANSY

    A hysteretic multiscale formulation for nonlinear dynamic analysis of composite materials

    This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.A new multiscale finite element formulation is presented for nonlinear dynamic analysis of heterogeneous structures. The proposed multiscale approach utilizes the hysteretic finite element method to model the microstructure. Using the proposed computational scheme, the micro-basis functions, that are used to map the microdisplacement components to the coarse mesh, are only evaluated once and remain constant throughout the analysis procedure. This is accomplished by treating inelasticity at the micro-elemental level through properly defined hysteretic evolution equations. Two types of imposed boundary conditions are considered for the derivation of the multiscale basis functions, namely the linear and periodic boundary conditions. The validity of the proposed formulation as well as its computational efficiency are verified through illustrative numerical experiments

    Controlled diffusion processes with markovian switchings for modeling dynamical engineering systems

    A modeling approach to treat noisy engineering systems is presented. We deal with controlled systems that evolve in a continuous-time over finite time intervals, but also in continuous interaction with environments of intrinsic variability. We face the complexity of these systems by introducing a methodology based on Stochastic Differential Equations (SDE) models. We focus on specific type of complexity derived from unpredictable abrupt and/or structural changes. In this paper an approach based on controlled Stochastic Differential Equations with Markovian Switchings (SDEMS) is proposed. Technical conditions for the existence and uniqueness of the solution of these models are provided. We treat with nonlinear SDEMS that does not have closed solutions. Then, a numerical approximation to the exact solution based on the Euler- Maruyama Method (EM) is proposed. Convergence in strong sense and stability are provided.     A 3-D Inelastic Analysis Method program is described. This program consists of a series of new computer codes embodying a progression of mathematical models (mechanics of materials, special finite element, boundary element) for streamlined analysis of: (1) combustor liners, (2) turbine blades, and (3) turbine vanes. These models address the effects of high temperatures and thermal/mechanical loadings on the local (stress/strain)and global (dynamics, buckling) structural behavior of the three selected components. Three computer codes, referred to as MOMM (Mechanics of Materials Model), MHOST (Marc-Hot Section Technology), and BEST (Boundary Element Stress Technology), have been developed and are briefly described in this report

    MHOST: An efficient finite element program for inelastic analysis of solids and structures

    An efficient finite element program for 3-D inelastic analysis of gas turbine hot section components was constructed and validated. A novel mixed iterative solution strategy is derived from the augmented Hu-Washizu variational principle in order to nodally interpolate coordinates, displacements, deformation, strains, stresses and material properties. A series of increasingly sophisticated material models incorporated in MHOST include elasticity, secant plasticity, infinitesimal and finite deformation plasticity, creep and unified viscoplastic constitutive model proposed by Walker. A library of high performance elements is built into this computer program utilizing the concepts of selective reduced integrations and independent strain interpolations. A family of efficient solution algorithms is implemented in MHOST for linear and nonlinear equation solution including the classical Newton-Raphson, modified, quasi and secant Newton methods with optional line search and the conjugate gradient method

    This Annual Status Report presents the results of work performed during the third year of the 3-D Inelastic Analysis Methods for Hot Sections Components program (NASA Contract NAS3-23697). The objective of the program is to produce a series of computer codes that permit more accurate and efficient three-dimensional analyses of selected hot section components, i.e., combustor liners, turbine blades, and turbine vanes. The computer codes embody a progression of mathematical models and are streamlined to take advantage of geometrical features, loading conditions, and forms of material response that distinguish each group of selected components

    CSM Testbed Development and Large-Scale Structural Applications

    A research activity called Computational Structural Mechanics (CSM) conducted at the NASA Langley Research Center is described. This activity is developing advanced structural analysis and computational methods that exploit high-performance computers. Methods are developed in the framework of the CSM Testbed software system and applied to representative complex structural analysis problems from the aerospace industry. An overview of the CSM Testbed methods development environment is presented and some new numerical methods developed on a CRAY-2 are described. Selected application studies performed on the NAS CRAY-2 are also summarized
