Direct and inverse acoustic scattering by a collection of extended and point-like scatterers

We are concerned with the acoustic scattering by an extended obstacle surrounded by point-like obstacles. The extended obstacle is supposed to be rigid while the point-like obstacles are modeled by point perturbations of the exterior Laplacian. In the first part, we consider the forward problem. Following two equivalent approaches (the Foldy formal method and the Krein resolvent method), we show that the scattered field is a sum of two contributions: one is due to the diffusion by the extended obstacle and the other arises from the linear combination of the interactions between the point-like obstacles and the interaction between the point-like obstacles with the extended one. In the second part, we deal with the inverse problem. It consists in reconstructing both the extended and point-like scatterers from the corresponding far-field pattern. To solve this problem, we describe and justify the factorization method of Kirsch. Using this method, we provide several numerical results and discuss the multiple scattering effect concerning both the interactions between the point-like obstacles and between these obstacles and the extended one

Direct and inverse time-harmonic elastic scattering from point-like and extended obstacles

This paper is concerned with the time-harmonic direct and inverse elastic scattering by an extended rigid elastic body surrounded by a finite number of point-like obstacles. We first justify the point-interaction model for the Lamé operator within the singular perturbation approach. For a general family of pointwise-supported singular perturbations, including anisotropic and non-local interactions, we derive an explicit representation of the scattered field. In the case of isotropic and local point-interactions, our result is consistent with the ones previously obtained by Foldy's formal method as well as by the renormalization technique. In the case of multiple scattering with pointwise and extended obstacles, we show that the scattered field consists of two parts: one is due to the diffusion by the extended scatterer and the other one is a linear combination of the interactions between the point-like obstacles and the interaction between the point-like obstacles with the extended one. As to the inverse problem, the factorization method by Kirsch is adapted to recover simultaneously the shape of an extended elastic body and the location of point-like scatterers in the case of isotropic and local interactions. The inverse problems using only one type of elastic waves (i.e. pressure or shear waves) are also investigated and numerical examples are presented to confirm the inversion schemes

Self-adjoint elliptic operators with boundary conditions on not closed hypersurfaces

The abstract theory of self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators is used to construct self-adjoint realizations of a second-order elliptic operator on Rn\mathbb{R}^{n} with linear boundary conditions on (a relatively open part of) a compact hypersurface. Our approach allows to obtain Krein-like resolvent formulas where the reference operator coincides with the "free" operator with domain H2(Rn)H^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{n}); this provides an useful tool for the scattering problem from a hypersurface. Concrete examples of this construction are developed in connection with the standard boundary conditions, Dirichlet, Neumann, Robin, δ\delta and δ′\delta^{\prime}-type, assigned either on a n−1n-1 dimensional compact boundary Γ=∂Ω\Gamma=\partial\Omega or on a relatively open part Σ⊂Γ\Sigma\subset\Gamma. Schatten-von Neumann estimates for the difference of the powers of resolvents of the free and the perturbed operators are also proven; these give existence and completeness of the wave operators of the associated scattering systems.Comment: Final revised version, to appear in Journal of Differential Equation
