    Review of research in feature-based design

    Research in feature-based design is reviewed. Feature-based design is regarded as a key factor towards CAD/CAPP integration from a process planning point of view. From a design point of view, feature-based design offers possibilities for supporting the design process better than current CAD systems do. The evolution of feature definitions is briefly discussed. Features and their role in the design process and as representatives of design-objects and design-object knowledge are discussed. The main research issues related to feature-based design are outlined. These are: feature representation, features and tolerances, feature validation, multiple viewpoints towards features, features and standardization, and features and languages. An overview of some academic feature-based design systems is provided. Future research issues in feature-based design are outlined. The conclusion is that feature-based design is still in its infancy, and that more research is needed for a better support of the design process and better integration with manufacturing, although major advances have already been made

    Presented in this paper is our experience of teaching freeform fabrication to students at the Missouri University of Science and Technology, and to high school students and teachers. The emphasis of the curriculum is exposing students to rapid product development technologies with the goal of creating awareness to emerging career opportunities in CAD/CAM. Starting from solid modeling, principles of freeform fabrication, to applications of rapid prototyping and manufacturing in industry sponsored product development projects, students can learn in-depth freeform fabrication technologies.     Tolerance analysis by static analogy on 2D assemblies with fits and fasteners

    In tolerance analysis, the effect of clearance fits is especially difficult to estimate because the mating parts are not necessarily in actual contact and can take an infinite number of relative positions. The treatment of these situations is allowed in most of the available methods, possibly introducing additional elements in the dimension chains with appropriate statistical assumptions. The paper provides a similar extension for the static analogy, a previously proposed method that converts the tolerance analysis problem into an equivalent problem of force analysis. The procedure represents each fit, possibly between patterns of features (e.g., fasteners and holes), with a proper constraint in the equivalent static model. The ability of the constraint to transmit forces and torques is determined according to the types and directions of misalignments allowed by the joint clearance. With simple rules, this avoids complications in the static model, which must include only the constraint between parts rather than the geometric details of the mating features. The extended method, currently limited to 2D dimension chains, is demonstrated on examples involving both dimensional and geometric tolerances. The comparison with existing methods shows the correctness of the proposed procedure. The simplicity of the workflow confirms the possibility, already demonstrated for the static analogy, of avoiding numerical simulations or even the use of computer-based tools

    On-the-fly adaptivity for nonlinear twoscale simulations using artificial neural networks and reduced order modeling

    A multi-fidelity surrogate model for highly nonlinear multiscale problems is proposed. It is based on the introduction of two different surrogate models and an adaptive on-the-fly switching. The two concurrent surrogates are built incrementally starting from a moderate set of evaluations of the full order model. Therefore, a reduced order model (ROM) is generated. Using a hybrid ROM-preconditioned FE solver, additional effective stress-strain data is simulated while the number of samples is kept to a moderate level by using a dedicated and physics-guided sampling technique. Machine learning (ML) is subsequently used to build the second surrogate by means of artificial neural networks (ANN). Different ANN architectures are explored and the features used as inputs of the ANN are fine tuned in order to improve the overall quality of the ML model. Additional ANN surrogates for the stress errors are generated. Therefore, conservative design guidelines for error surrogates are presented by adapting the loss functions of the ANN training in pure regression or pure classification settings. The error surrogates can be used as quality indicators in order to adaptively select the appropriate -- i.e. efficient yet accurate -- surrogate. Two strategies for the on-the-fly switching are investigated and a practicable and robust algorithm is proposed that eliminates relevant technical difficulties attributed to model switching. The provided algorithms and ANN design guidelines can easily be adopted for different problem settings and, thereby, they enable generalization of the used machine learning techniques for a wide range of applications. The resulting hybrid surrogate is employed in challenging multilevel FE simulations for a three-phase composite with pseudo-plastic micro-constituents.     abstract: The goal of this research project is to develop a DOF (degree of freedom) algebra for entity clusters to support tolerance specification, validation, and tolerance automation. This representation is required to capture the relation between geometric entities, metric constraints and tolerance specification. This research project is a part of an on-going project on creating a bi-level model of GD&T; (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing). This thesis presents the systematic derivation of degree of freedoms of entity clusters corresponding to tolerance classes. The clusters can be datum reference frames (DRFs) or targets. A binary vector representation of degree of freedom and operations for combining them are proposed. An algebraic method is developed by using DOF representation. The ASME Y14.5.1 companion to the Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T;) standard gives an exhaustive tabulation of active and invariant degrees of freedom (DOF) for Datum Reference Frames (DRF). This algebra is validated by checking it against all cases in the Y14.5.1 tabulation. This algebra allows the derivation of the general rules for tolerance specification and validation. A computer tool is implemented to support GD&T; specification and validation. The computer implementation outputs the geometric and tolerance information in the form of a CTF (Constraint-Tolerance-Feature) file which can be used for tolerance stack analysis.Dissertation/ThesisM.S.     NC Milling Error Assessment and Tool Path Correction

    A system of algorithms is presented for material removal simulation, dimensional error assessment and automated correction of Ăžve-axis numerically controlled (NC) milling tool paths. The methods are based on a spatial partitioning technique which incorporates incremental proximity calculations between milled and design surfaces. Hence, in addition to real-time animated Ăžve-axis milling simulation, milling errors are measured and displayed simultaneously. Using intermediate error assessment results, a reduction of intersection volume algorithm is developed to eliminate gouges on the workpiece via tool path correction. Finally, the view dependency typical of previous spatial partitioning-based NC simulation methods is overcome by a contour display technique which generates parallel planar contours to represent the workpiece, thus enabling dynamic viewing transformations without reconstruction of the entire data structure

    AbstractMeasurement aims to check the product conformance or to control the manufacturing processes’ parameters. It needs to be planned in an integrated and interoperable manner with other manufacturing activities. Integration of measurement planning is based on the information provided by the design phase. This paper aims to assist the interoperability of the measurement plans through introducing the resource-independent measurement specifications (RIMS) concept. The paper presents a conceptual framework for representing a STEP-based measurement features from the coordinate metrology perspective. The proposed framework supports the direct formulation of the measurement process specifications in an operation-based manner and the realization the process control functionality of the measurement processes

    TOLERANCE ALLOCATION FOR KINEMATIC SYSTEMS

    A method for allocating tolerances to exactly constrained assemblies is developed. The procedure is established as an optimization subject to constraints. The objective is to minimize the manufacturing cost of the assembly while respecting an acceptable level of performance. This method is particularly interesting for exactly constrained components that should be mass-produced. This thesis presents the different concepts used to develop the method. It describes exact constraint theory, manufacturing variations, optimization concepts, and the related mathematical tools. Then it explains how to relate these different topics in order to perform a tolerance allocation. The developed method is applied on two relevant exactly constrained examples: multi-fiber connectors, and kinematic coupling. Every time a mathematical model of the system and its corresponding manufacturing variations is established. Then an optimization procedure uses this model to minimize the manufacturing cost of the system while respecting its functional requirements. The results of the tolerance allocation are verified with Monte Carlo simulation
