Memories of agency, participation and resistance towards a diachronic dimension in communication for social change
In this article the author elaborates on an argument on how
memory work can add a new dimension to both the research
and practice of communication for development and social
change. What is often overlooked is how memory constitutes a
hidden resource in communicating for social change. A threepronged diachronic dimension is proposed to both research
in and practice of communication for development and social
change. Recognizing public memory as both a rhetorical
strategy (Phillips 2014) and political strategy (Olesen 2014)
and being attentive to the challenges of translating the past
into a meaningful present altogether (Mbembe 2001) constitute
stepping stones, both in planning communication for social
change strategies and in understanding their dynamics and
potential. This diachronic dimension can furthermore prove
a useful pathway to deepen our understanding of what really
happened with the ‘eruption’ of social movements in recent
years
Designing to Restory the Past: Storytelling for Empowerment through a Digital Archive
Storytelling is a frequently used approach to design. Stories and storytelling also have a role in mediating information and contributing to people\u27s understanding of the world around them. Previous research suggests that storytelling can be empowering to marginalized and diverse communities, such as Indigenous peoples, by offering a platform to voice their (hi)stories. In this paper, we present a research through design project in which we explore the design of the living archive. This is a web-based digital archive that encourages a user-based approach to restorying the past by focusing on storytelling for empowerment and involving members of Indigenous People, the Sami. We demonstrate how a digital archive can contribute to (re)storying the past in a manner that preserves Indigenous ways of knowing and ethical archiving of social memory. Through this archive, we provide the digital tools for the communities to take on the role to tell their truth and, in doing so, become central in the design and communication of their own stories. In short, design for storytelling to empower those who need a voice

The Psychological Empowerment Impact of Twitter Microblogging: The Case of #stopasianhate During Covid-19 Pandemic
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a surge in anti-Asian hate incidents across the US (Misra et al., 2020). As a response to the alarming escalation in xenophobia and racism resulting from the pandemic, #StopAsianHate and #StopAAPIHate have been employed to shed light on the issues. Twitter can effectively assist protestors to participate in the movement by facilitating collective effort, efficiently disseminating the information, and encouraging the discussion about a topic (Chon & Park, 2020). Social media has been recognized for its contribution to one\u27s empowerment in various domains, allowing the marginalized group to regain their sense of power (Mehra et al., 2004; Perkins, 1995). Drawing on the association between Twitter microblogging and empowerment (Hermida & Hernández-Santaolalla, 2018), this study examines how the use of Twitter microblogging for anti-Asian hate crimes advocacy can affect users\u27 psychological empowerment. More importantly, this study aims to raise awareness of the violence against Asian communities and to combat prejudice toward Asians in the COVID-19 pandemic. With the mediating role of self-efficacy and sense of community, we analyzed the use of Twitter microblogging to advocate against Asian hate and users\u27 psychological empowerment level using Social Cognitive Theory. This study recruited 474 Asian Twitter users whose age between 18-29 years old and live in the United States by voluntary based convenience sampling to participate in the online survey administered by Qualtrics
