Asymptotic Analysis of Double-Scattering Channels
We consider a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple access channel
(MAC), where the channel between each transmitter and the receiver is modeled
by the doubly-scattering channel model. Based on novel techniques from random
matrix theory, we derive deterministic approximations of the mutual
information, the signal-to-noise-plus-interference-ratio (SINR) at the output
of the minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) detector and the sum-rate with MMSE
detection which are almost surely tight in the large system limit. Moreover, we
derive the asymptotically optimal transmit covariance matrices. Our simulation
results show that the asymptotic analysis provides very close approximations
for realistic system dimensions.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to the Annual Asilomar Conference on

Precoder design for space-time coded systems over correlated Rayleigh fading channels using convex optimization
A class of computationally efficient linear precoders for space-time block coded multiple-input multiple-output wireless systems is derived based on the minimization of the exact symbol error rate (SER) and its upper bound. Both correlations at the transmitter and receiver are assumed to be present, and only statistical channel state information in the form of the transmit and receive correlation matrices is assumed to be available at the transmitter. The convexity of the design based on SER minimization is established and exploited. The advantage of the developed technique is its low complexity. We also find various relationships of the proposed designs to the existing precoding techniques, and derive very simple closed-form precoders for special cases such as two or three receive antennas and constant receive correlation. The numerical simulations illustrate the excellent SER performance of the proposed precoders
Optimal Transmit Covariance for Ergodic MIMO Channels
In this paper we consider the computation of channel capacity for ergodic
multiple-input multiple-output channels with additive white Gaussian noise. Two
scenarios are considered. Firstly, a time-varying channel is considered in
which both the transmitter and the receiver have knowledge of the channel
realization. The optimal transmission strategy is water-filling over space and
time. It is shown that this may be achieved in a causal, indeed instantaneous
fashion. In the second scenario, only the receiver has perfect knowledge of the
channel realization, while the transmitter has knowledge of the channel gain
probability law. In this case we determine an optimality condition on the input
covariance for ergodic Gaussian vector channels with arbitrary channel
distribution under the condition that the channel gains are independent of the
transmit signal. Using this optimality condition, we find an iterative
algorithm for numerical computation of optimal input covariance matrices.
Applications to correlated Rayleigh and Ricean channels are given.Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Information

Filter-And-Forward Distributed Beamforming in Relay Networks with Frequency Selective Fading
A new approach to distributed cooperative beamforming in relay networks with
frequency selective fading is proposed. It is assumed that all the relay nodes
are equipped with finite impulse response (FIR) filters and use a
filter-and-forward (FF) strategy to compensate for the transmitter-to-relay and
relay-to-destination channels.
Three relevant half-duplex distributed beamforming problems are considered.
The first problem amounts to minimizing the total relay transmitted power
subject to the destination quality-of-service (QoS) constraint. In the second
and third problems, the destination QoS is maximized subject to the total and
individual relay transmitted power constraints, respectively. For the first and
second problems, closed-form solutions are obtained, whereas the third problem
is solved using convex optimization. The latter convex optimization technique
can be also directly extended to the case when the individual and total power
constraints should be jointly taken into account. Simulation results
demonstrate that in the frequency selective fading case, the proposed FF
approach provides substantial performance improvements as compared to the
commonly used amplify-and-forward (AF) relay beamforming strategy.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Trans. on Signal Processing on 8 July 200
Why Does a Kronecker Model Result in Misleading Capacity Estimates?
Many recent works that study the performance of multi-input multi-output
(MIMO) systems in practice assume a Kronecker model where the variances of the
channel entries, upon decomposition on to the transmit and the receive
eigen-bases, admit a separable form. Measurement campaigns, however, show that
the Kronecker model results in poor estimates for capacity. Motivated by these
observations, a channel model that does not impose a separable structure has
been recently proposed and shown to fit the capacity of measured channels
better. In this work, we show that this recently proposed modeling framework
can be viewed as a natural consequence of channel decomposition on to its
canonical coordinates, the transmit and/or the receive eigen-bases. Using tools
from random matrix theory, we then establish the theoretical basis behind the
Kronecker mismatch at the low- and the high-SNR extremes: 1) Sparsity of the
dominant statistical degrees of freedom (DoF) in the true channel at the
low-SNR extreme, and 2) Non-regularity of the sparsity structure (disparities
in the distribution of the DoF across the rows and the columns) at the high-SNR
extreme.Comment: 39 pages, 5 figures, under review with IEEE Trans. Inform. Theor
A Modified Levenberg-Marquardt Method for the Bidirectional Relay Channel
This paper presents an optimization approach for a system consisting of
multiple bidirectional links over a two-way amplify-and-forward relay. It is
desired to improve the fairness of the system. All user pairs exchange
information over one relay station with multiple antennas. Due to the joint
transmission to all users, the users are subject to mutual interference. A
mitigation of the interference can be achieved by max-min fair precoding
optimization where the relay is subject to a sum power constraint. The
resulting optimization problem is non-convex. This paper proposes a novel
iterative and low complexity approach based on a modified Levenberg-Marquardt
method to find near optimal solutions. The presented method finds solutions
close to the standard convex-solver based relaxation approach.Comment: submitted to IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology We corrected
